Seeking Remedies for Ear Infections

I would go to a chiropractor. My son at 13 months had a couple of ear infections and we took him to a chiropractor (Elwartowski in Marble Falls) and it cleared up in a couple of days and he now rarely gets them. If you do go to a chiropractor I would research and find one that has additional training with children.

Both of my kids had the adnoid and tube surgery. My daughter had her first ear infection when she was 6 weeks old! We tried everything. It was also confirmed that she had a hearing loss of about 20 to 30%. Finally at 14 months we had the surgery. Wow, what a difference it made. After the surgery, the surgeon came and told us he had never seen such big adnoids. Didn't matter how much medicine we gave her the adnoids were the problem. Held the infection. My son had his first ear infection at 4 weeks. He had his first set of tubes at 5 months. I begged them to take his adnoids and the doctor said he was too young. The tubes helped but he still had ear infections. Again, the adnoids held the infection. Finally they took them out and again the surgeon told us he had never seen such big infected adnoids. Both kids had different surgeons! The tubes fall out. My daughter is 20 and has not had an ear infection since! My son is 16 and has had one since they took his adnoids out! It works! I have two daughters - one is now just over 2 and the other will be 9 mths next week. My 2-year-old had many ear infections starting at about 6 months. It seemed like she had one every 3 weeks. As a result she never slept well. We were told that we should consider getting tubes in her ears but we were very reluctant as we did not like the idea of her "having surgery". So we initially tried a chiropractor (because I had a friend whose son responded well to that treatment path) but it did not help in our case. So we ultimately did the tube surgery at 14 months and it was the best thing we have done for her. She has had one ear infection since and it was very mild. My 8 month old has already had enough ear infections to meet the criteria for tubes too and is having them put in next week. Now that we know what to expect it was a much easier decision. As a follow-up my two-year-old daughter was still constantly snotty even on allergy medicine and at our one-year follow-up appointment I asked the ENT about it and he said they could do an allergy test but it wouldn't find anything and that the allergist would just tell me to cut out dairy, so we have cut out/down dairy and she has improved so much, so that may be something to try as well....good luck. in treating the infections, one must prevent reoccurrance. The allergies & ear infections are most definately related. By multiple antibiotics,his "Good bacteria" which fights off viruses has been killed along with the bad bacteria(infection), The result, reoccurrance of infections, low immune system,developing allergies and even more suseptible to other illness;not to mention the body becoming resilent to the antibiotics eventually.

I have an excellent suggestion. It may sound off the wall, but take him to a chiropractor. This can be remedied with no meds at all, and give him the natural healing he needs. This is going to sound almost too easy. Have your neighbor try giving her child over the counter sinus/allergy pills. My daughter had the same problem. After seeing the school nurse twice in 2 weeks she sent a note home saying it was her sinuses. That was three years ago. We haven't had an ear infection since. When her nose starts running or her ear "doesn't hear good" I start her on allergy medicine. Works wonders. Before the school nurse told me it was her sinuses the doctors would give her all kinds of antibiotics and other medicine she didn't even need.

One of my best friend's daughter was recommended for adenoid surgery. My friend didn't believe it was altogether necessary until she went into her room and just sat and listened to her daughter try to breath while sleeping. She said she had never been so scared... The sound of her 3 year old gasping and wheezing, stop breathing then restart throughout the night... After that she said she herself couldn't sleep (too haunted with worry) until after her daughter's surgery.

If this little boy has adnoids so large or problematic that they interfere with his breathing or quality of sleep, why would any mother choose to wait? Especially if he also has asthma or other breathing issues...?! (Oi vey!)

As for eartubes, my child had them at 15 months. Its a 5 minute procedure. They fall out as the child grows older; the "holes" heal. I have no doubt that they have saved her from suffering through multiple ear infections, pain and fevers. After the 2nd trip to children's hospital due to allergic reactions to antibiotics, I swore I'd consider all options to keep her off antibiotics... Her eartubes have worked (along with dietry changes). Otherwise, what is the alternative? Having a child build up resistence to medication and be slated for more and more powerful antibiotics is not a good path.

Please ask your neighbor to reconsider.

We had that problem about a yr and a half ago with our son. i didn't want to go the surgical route because of the risks of putting them to sleep. so we did seek out a chiropracter, and that did seem to help for a little while but then the ear infections came back. since having his surgery a little over a year ago, he has not had 1 ear infection! talk about a blessing!! and his hearing has improved so very much. i know as parents we are all weary about putting our kids thru something like that, but they honeslty don't remember it! and its gonna help him so much!

Not natural, but worked for us. Mucinex--our ear infections often followed a period of congestion. Using the Mucinex as directed for several days at the first signs of congestion have facilitated better drainage and helped us to avoid subsequent infections. My daughter did have to have tubes, but continued to have infections for the six months after. We've had good results with the Mucinex in the past six months and haven't had anymore infections. The little one needs plenty of water and juice on this regimen.

i use to work in health food store we went by A book by ALLEDA DAVIS called lets get well 75 mg vit C no more in a child but give applied supply of vit.E 280 milegrams i'm getting this all out of the book ,and go to the DR and tell him of the vitiams .

I would suggest her changing her baby shampoo. There is a chemical in baby shampoo that causes ear infections. Many people don't think so but do some research and you'll see that most all health issues we have are from our diet and products we use. I use only natural products and my little guy has had no health issues besides a couple runny noses.

The tubes are the best. With out them he can have a hearing loss. My son and grandson both had these and they worked great. As they grow they fall out and the ear's are fine. Hearing loss is not something to play with.

Hello Sam.. I have a son who was having ear infections too, and on antibiotics a lot and him crying at night with the pain and then at 5 he could not hear.. I took him in and they confirmed it but at 5 he was reading lips. You could turn him around and ask if he wanted ice cream no response, turn him to face you and ask the same question and he would answer. YES He had hearing before this but due to allergies, it was building up in his ears.. so he had tubes put in and adenoids removed, as he also snored, at 5. He did well and when he came out of surgery he covered his ears and said what is all that noise? We were on the 7th floor of the hospital so we had to listen and it was all the noise outside, cars beeping, sirens. Then on day he said what is that pretty noise. It was a bird.. I cried.. We had to learn to listen to things that we all just pass off.. He had to have tubes twice, but the end is he is 35 now and nothing wrong with his hearing so this was many years ago... 30 and there are so many new ways now.. Tell her not to worry and go ahead.. The surgery is non-invasive and has no recovery time. It is a necessary procedure for many children that should not be delayed. The problem is a physical malformed, not something that can be fixed by other means. Ear infections can be treated, but the problem will persist until this is completed.

my daughter is about to get tubes put in next week. The problem isn't the ear infections, the problem is that fluid builds up in the ear and doesn't naturally drain like it's supposed to. the fluid sitting there is what causes the ear infections. Giving antibiotics too often can make a child allergic to them and make them ineffective at treating any infection later on. Until that fluid can drain out of the ear, the child will keep getting ear infections, which is quite painful. This can also lead to hearing loss and is often a culprit of speech delays (as in my daughter's case). The only way to remedy this is to put the tubes in so that the fluid can drain out of the ears. And I think it's safe to say that no herbal remedy can widen the natural drainage tubes in the ears to drain the fluid buildup. Your neighbor shouldn't be so worried about the surgery. It's about a 3-5 minute operation, 1-2 hours total hospital stay. The tubes usually only have to stay in for 6 months. Your neighbor should be more worried about her son even having one more ear infection, possibly damaging his eardrums, causing hearing loss, and giving him antibiotic allergies (not to mention the pain he is in every time his ears get infected)

Seems like so many folks are having issues with their little ones and ear infections. Before I did the tube thing I would have her checked for allergies and I would have the neighbor check her kitchen and cleaning items for chemicals- so many household cleaning items and laundry items are so full of chemicals that cause all kindsof allergic reactions which chould b a cause of the ear infections- I can recommend some products for your neighbor and give her some research sites to look at if interested. My advice would be to take him to an allergist, especially since you say he may have asthma, as those are frequently related. Several ENT's are also allergists and they may have solutions that don't involve surgery. That route worked for both my brother and me when we were young as well as for several others I know.
