Seeking Pschiatrist/counseling for Daughter

My 5-year-old daughter is overweight. My daughter is a beautiful, sweet little girl with a great imagination and lots of passion for life. But I'm concerend that if we don't get this situation taken care of, it will be a lifetime problem, and I don't want that for her. I have journaled her food intake and try to modify her diet as well as increase her activity. She loses a little weight, but seems to put it back on easity. During all this we have noticed that she has some behavioral issuse with food. We would like to find a child pschologist that could help us deal with her behaviors with food. But more importantly, someone who can guide us in the correct way to handle this situation. We want to make sure we build her self-esteem up, not tear it down. Anybody have any recommendations for a child psychologist or have dealt with a similar situation?

I'm not sure what area you are in, but I have a great recommendation. Her name is Susan Fletcher in Plano. Her website will have all of her information it's

www.SmartZoneExpert.com

She held a seminar recently for the Plano Chamber of Commerce, she has 3 children and has written a book about parenting. I think she has a very direct and easy to follow approach to dealing with children's issues. I feel her input would be very beneficial for you. As an overweight child and now adult, I am really glad that you are deciding to seek help with your situation. As eating is usually connected to deeper issues that can last a life time if children are not taught to deal with them. Good luck!

Hi, A....

I am new to this site, and just read your request from back in Feb. I was wondering if you might have had your daughter checked for food allergies and hormone deficiencies. They might be contributing to your daughter's weight problem. I hope you have found the answers, and that you're all doing well now!

Have you tried Weight Watchers? I started on WW and I have point calculator. My 8 yr old loves going through the store, reading the nutrional values, entering them in the calculator to get a WW point value. I would start small, and maybe use a psychologist later. That could have a devastating event.

Hi A.,
I don't know of any psychiatrist but I can recommend a great book written by a local pediatrician. Defeating the Child Obesity Epidemic is by Dr Carolyn Ashworth. Here is the AMazon link- http://www.amazon.com/Defeating-Obesity-Epidemic-Carolyn-...

You may call her office and see if she is accepting new patients???

Hi A.,

I am a pediatric dietitian for a fairly new program at Children's Medical Center Dallas called LEAN Families. It's a family-centered 12-week program focusing on teaching healthy lifestyle changes. We have a clinical social worker that does work with the families in addition to a physician, registered nurse and physical therapist. Our age range is 6-11 years old, but we have taken some 5 year-olds. If you are interested in finding out more information, call our direct office at 214-456-LEAN. If you attend a clinic visit and we see that your child needs intense psychological therapy, we can refer you to a pediatric psychiatriast. We have a great team at Children's.

One of our biggest goals in the program is to build our families up. The kids have a BLAST with all the fun activities we do and we are seeing amazing results. All of the staff is super passionate about what we do and lifelong relationships are formed between the families.

Good Luck,
A.

I recommend Dr. Gloria Brun-Amaya M.D. of Greenville, Tx. She specializes in Child Pschiatry. She's great. She had a practice in Midland for years and recently moved to Greenville to open a new practice.
