Seeking Out of Town Getaway for the Family
We want to beat the heat and was wondering if anyone knew of a great place to travel to by car that is a bit cooler... I would settle for ten degrees cooler! Was hoping for somewhere outside of Texas that would be no longer than an eight hour drive and that is inexpensive and family orientated. I was hoping to find a place where they rented cabins and we could take our boat. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

I would highly recommend Beavers Bend State Park. It's in the SE corner of Oklahoma. It's probably about a 3.5-4 hr drive from the D/FW area. They have cabins there to rent, a nature center, putt-putt, canoeing, paddle boats, playground. It's just a very beautiful state park. Here's the website:

well, everyone's having a heat wave right now so you'll be lucky to find someplace that is 10 degrees cooler.... even in Denver, Colorado (the mile high city) they're in the upper 90's. :) If you want to get to the mountains -- try Arkansas... someplace north like Calico Rock -- there are cabins there. Branson, MO... Turner Falls, OK... (get in the water -- it's cooler). Good luck

We have been on family vacations to the Lake of the Oasarks in Missouri. We stayed in a cabin on the Lake that had many things for the little ones to do as well as fishing and boating.

I was going to suggest Lake Murray in Oklahoma. You can also go to the Oklahoma State Parks site to see what other Parks have cabins. It might be a little cooler there.
We also love Hot Springs, Arkansas - it's a little further for the kids, but also nice.
