Texas Vacation or Staycation

Does anyone have any unusual or great vacation ideas for Spring Break for a family of four (4 and 9 y.o.) to go to that we can drive to or take Southwest from Dallas Love? I have planned nothing and we have already been to Seaworld, Gaylord Texan, and Port A. I priced Great Wolf Lodge and I just can't see paying the money. My husband can't take off from work for more than a day or two and I priced Mexico and that won't work. Thanks for some fresh ideas!

We are looking to maybe renting a cabin for a couple nights around one of the local lakes. That way we cna have the camping experience and not use tents. I have not yet narrowed down where.

Several of my friends have been to Lake hamilton area in Arkansas and also Hot Springs. there are alot of places to hike and also a small amusement park as well as stuff to do on the lake (not swimming as it;s cold). Everyone says they had a really good time and we have been wanting to try it but have not had the time yet!

There have some suggenstions for Fredricksburg. It is a nice place. It has a German background and several shops and B&B's in the downtown area. When we went there we spent a day in town looking through the shops and then had dinner at a little German restaurant. We camped further out at Enchanted Rock State Park and spent another day climbing the rock and hiking the area around it. If you like to camp Lake Whitney is also nice and not too far to drive, or right here in Cedar Hill at Joe Pool Lake.

i haven't been but i always hear from others how great Fredericksburg is (sp?). I don't know wht you do there but i've had several friends and family go and tell me what a nice time they had iwth their families....i'm not sure if the kids enjoyed it or just the parents but i've heard good reviews. or whatabout Dinosaur Valley State park? actually, that's in Glen Rose and i see you've had that recommendation. that could be the place!

For Labor Day last year my family went to DeGray Lake State Park in Arkansas and had a blast. The lodge was decent - nothing fancy but clean and comfortable. We rode bicycles, rode horses, fished, had picnics, etc. Very laid back and extremely reasonably priced, and only about a 4 hour drive.

Since you have already done the "tourist" things (Seaworld, etc...) why don't you find a quaint, little town full of history, then go stay there like you are a local.

Sit on the benches on main st. oustide the barber shop. Eat at the local diner. Talk to the people that live there. Show in the drug store.

It will be relaxing, different from what you have done before, and looking back on it, it will be a trip to remember forever. ESPECIALLY if you really talk to the locals!!!

We always go camping, if you aren't one to "rough" it, alot of the state parks rent out cabins. There are even golf courses and wi-fi at some parks! We ar taking our daughter 2 and nephews 5,8,10 to inks lake SP, which has all of these and going on a canoe tour offered there. You should check out the texas state park website... http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/
We have been to quite a few state parks but the ones around a lake are always the most fun ;)
