Soy chips are really good, if you like salty, crunchy snacks. They come in a variety of flavors. If you have a sweet tooth try Sugar Free Jello and whipcream for a treat, it is very low carb and hits the spot.
Congratulation's and all the best

HI, I am a 52 yr old who has 4 adult sons and only nursed the last two. I ran to into hindrances due to the ignorances of thow who oppose nursing. Withthe 3rd child I met a Lache League member who kept in touch with me during my pregrnancy. So I was mentally prepared and excited about nursing and no one was able to convince otherwise by the time he was born. He nursed for about 10 months and for 3 more months nursed only when he need consoling or closeness. The fourth son I met a nurse who nursed her youngest son for 36 months. She encouraged me also. I already knew I was going to nurse, but she added to my knowledge. This son nursed for an even longer time. I had to go away for a week end to break him.( smile) He was 22months old.(smile) But I ate normally. Just remember what you eat the baby will eat, just like when you're pregnant. Find a local Leche League Chapter tey will be very helpful. Alot of mothers say they don't have enough milk. Stress will keep us from producing milk and not taking in enough fluids and not nursing around the clock. Wehave to be the babies means of nutrition. The more you nurse the more your body produces. I use d to love to fill my breast fill up. They get on your babies schedule. It's like an alert that the baby will be waking up to eat and you can prepare for it. It's wonderful. Don't let anyone talk you out of it. Your baby will be healthier, it will help you lose your baby weight, and so many other things like birth control. If you can't find a L.Leaglue chapter find some of their books. Best Wishes.

I too, am a little confused about when you need help for your diet. Now or for nursing? Why did your OB put you on that diet? Do you have a pregnancy health related condition? Here is some info on the Brewer's diet, one often used in pregnancy.

V.,

My midwife put me on a similar diet, but she sat down and told me what I should and shouldn't be eating- she didn't leave me to figure it out myself. You may want to ask for more specifics next time.

She loves a book called "Fit for Life" published in 1987. What someone else said about fruit and veggies is true- lots of water, which you and the baby desperately need becasue the kidneys need to function. She had me drinking 2.5 to 3 quarts of water a day and it so made it easier. I feel so much better and can feel if I'm not drinking enough. I've even kept that up even though I'm not breastfeeding anymore. She said "Fit for Life" is the perfect eating plan (note I didn't say 'diet')for a pregnant woman. Read it and you'll understand why.

Good luck!

I'm not sure why you were put on a low carb/ high protien diet while pregnant. Some of the most nutritious foods like fruits and many veggies are full of healthy carbs. If I were you I'd fill up on things like veggies(alot of big salads or lightly steamed), fruits, some lean meats and small amounts of low mercury fish(like wild salmon), beans, sprouts, and nuts for protien, and have some "good" carbs. "Ezekial" bread, found in the freezer section of natural food stores are sprouted grain breads(no flour and heated at lower temps) that are also a good choice. But I also think things like oatmeal and rice are very healthy options, and very satisfying when it comes to filling full. There's really no reason to cut out carbohydrates, just keep it to the nutritious kind. Maybe you can just cut back in carbs if it's about a weight issue. The mainstay of your diet should be a variety of fruits and veggies, then protein and maybe some rice, baked sweet potato, or other healthy carb choice with your evening meal. I really don't think you should go strongly into a high protien/low carb(such as atkins) during pregnancy though. It's really not good for your kidneys, and they're already under enough strain during pregnancy. And there really isn't a worse time to put a woman on a strict diet than when she's prego and dealing with a crap load of cravings!! Hope this helps!!

Hey! Wieght Watchers Core Program is EXACTLY what you are looking for... dont let the name fool you - in this program there is a COMPLETE list of foods that are higher in protein, lower in fat and carbs...whats nice is that you eat until you are satisfied...so you are not depriving yourself...if you dont want to join, see if you can find someone that can give you the booklet..with the list of foods...if you eat pasta or rice, the ask you eat whole wheat or brown rice....and only once a day.... look over the program and ask your doctor, or speak to a rep at WW.I find myself feeling healthier when I do that program.

Hi V...
I'm not sure if your looking for advice now or while you are breasfeeding. I've never been super crazy about my diet while pregnant but while I'm nursing I'm a manic. Mostly avoiding certian foods. I eat alot of protein and carbs veggies, and fruit while nursing. I stay away from ALL gassy foods. I swear it effects the baby. I know alot of people who don't and they claim that their baby is fine but when I've seen them with the fussy baby after eating a a mean with peppers and onions...(go figure) Also,,,I drink alot of mothers milk tea espcially in the beginning. I drink it once I get to the hospital and it helps your milk come in quicker. Its helped me alot and it also makes me drink more as I forget to drink since I'm so busy. Good luck to you..

hi V., and congrats :) im wondering why your ob put you on a low carb diet. im assuming he means the starchy kind, and not fruits and especially veggies. i think you know what you should be eating, we all do, its just a matter of finding the willpower and resisting temptation. omg its so hard..... anyway, i just wanted to comment on 2 things the other moms said, just to be on the safe side. peanuts are great, all nuts are, though not so much in large amounts if you're watching your weight at all. however, if you or your immediate family has allergies, there is some evidence that eating peanuts, nuts, or some other common allergens can increase your babies chances of developing allergies. im allergic to nuts, though not peanuts, and i dont eat peanuts while pregnant or nursing. which i have been for over 5 years now, omg i miss peanut butter more than anything else. also, about the sugar free jello, does that have aspartame/nutrasweet in it? if so, thats a no-no too. of course it all depends how strict you are, just wanted you to have the info. all that said, just eat the best you can. lots of lean protien, whole grains, fruit and veggies. and lots of water. beleive me, i know this is a lot easier said than done, i have a major sweet tooth myself, its a struggle. just picture whatever you are putting in your mouth going into your babies mouth. take a good prenatal vitamin during preg and nursing. and when you slack off, remember that your baby will pretty much get what he/she needs, you are the one who will suffer more for it, so dont beat yourself up. just do the best you can and enjoy your pregnancy. and enjoy breastfeeding! it is wonderful. it might be hard the first few weeks, but remember that everything is hard the first few weeks no matter how you feed. i think so many people give up because they blame the nursing, but you are an experienced mom and you know that having a newborn can be rough. stick with it, you will be so happy you did. best of luck, D.

i developed gestational diabetes with my pregnancies and had to do a complete 180 in the food department. high protein is chicken, pork chops, meat!! if you want to do it easy, go on line, order from www.omahasteaks.com and buy yourself chicken breasts, pork chops, steaks, etc...the food is delicious and only slightly higher priced than the grocery store. stay away from pastas and breads...go on line and just do a little research...i used to live on junk food and now i eat much healthier and totally feel better about myself. Still nursing my 6 month old son and plan on nursing at leat till he's 1 year old. good luck!!!

That happened to me, so I feel your pain! I ended up eating a lot of peanut butter (though I know there's some concern about peanut allergies), cheese, cottage cheese and plain yogurt with berries and Fiber One cereal. I cut out juice. You can have all the veggies you want (of course, not very craveworthy...) For snacks, sugar-free jello isn't bad.

Let me know if I can help with anything else. Good luck!
