I live in Chandler and am interested in enrolling my 5 year old daughter in some dance lessons. She has not had lessons before and it is just for fun. I would also be interested in gymnastics lessons for my 3 year old. I would appreciate any help you can give! :)

What can I do next?

HI there
I know a few people who take their children to Dance Element, ###-###-####(Ray and Val Vista). My kids have gone there for a few summer programs and have had a good time.
You can take a look at the website: www.dance-element.com.

For a fun and inexpensive class, try the Pecos Community Center at 48th St and Pecos. I have my 3 year old enrolled for a gymnastics class there. Sign up through Phoenix Parks and Recreation.

For ballet only I have to recommend Mary Adams - Adams Ballet Academy. She is remarkable! I went for probably 10 years when I was younger and she has had many of her students go to the royal ballet or New York and other prestigious companys. If I had a daughter it wouldn't even be a choice. She is on Southern & McClintock.

I have also found the new Mesa Art Center to be amazing! It's in down town Mesa but it will give your girls the chance to try different styles to see what they like. The prices have been very easy on the wallet too (like $20 for the whole course!). They have summer programs that you can mix'n'match the classes you want. It's like school but every hour or so they go to a different class - ballet, then drama, then piano, then jazz etc. I love that it gives my child the chance to experience anything he wants. They do all ages child to adult & every medium of arts from drama, dance, music, photography, glass - you name it! Have fun!

In order to avoid a big financial committment while trying to find out what your daughter likes and what she doesn't, check out the new "Breaktime" magazine available at Fry's. The classes inside are for all ages - Preschool to Senior Citizen - and are sponsored by the Chandler Parks & Recreation Department. I'm teaching classes at the Tumbleweed Recreation Center - McQueen & Germann - in Stress Management, Public Speaking, Wellness Gardening for Adults and Wellness Gardening for Kids. I'm sure you will find what you are looking for.

SUNSHINE GENERATION!
Sunshine Generation is the leading non-audition performing Group for Children. Children learn to sing and dance to great songs in a low pressure, high energy atmosphere producing a love for music and greater self esteem. They perform at fun community events in the East Valley and do so 4 times a year. Classes are in Queen Creek and in Gilbert very close to South Chandler. Check it out at:

We currently go to Aspire by the Chandler Mall. We LOVE it there. The coaches are wonderful and the kids learn and master so many skills in a "noncompetitive" feeling place. Also, they give price breaks for the second child, which makes it very affordable for both children to take classes.

S., I owned a dance studio for 20 years and when we quit teaching I referred my students to Campbell's dance studio in Mesa. I think she keeps the costumes very modest and keeps the music decent and has a good program. Those are things I looked for. Plus she's been in business for a long long time. She began her studio before I did and we quit in the year 2000, so she has had experience that is very valuable.

Not sure where you live in Chandler but if you are in South Chandler I would recommend Heat Wave on Alma School and Germann for dance and Arizona Olympian on Gilbert just south of Ocotillo for gymnastics. With 3 girls we have researched it all.

Congratulations on your 6th!

We're in Gilbert, and we go to Precision Dance and Cheer. It's $40.00/month for the first class, then there's a discount for each add'l class you sign up for. My daughter is 3, and she loves it. It might be kind of further than you had hoped for though...what about The Little Gym? Also, Lifetime Fitness offers programs throughout the year for members and non-members. There's one off I-10 and one at Warner and Gilbert.

I don't know much about the dance, but for your 3 year old I highly recommend The Little Gym, they are in Ahwatukee. They are a non-competive gymnastics and motor-skill development program. I worked there for about 4 years and now that I am a SAHM I take my son there. They offer a free trial class so you can take her in and try out a class and see what you think. Their number is ###-###-####. Good Luck!

USA Gymnastics on Baseline/Horne has a good staff and set-up. I have worked with them on occasion to do some classes for their students (although I'm not doing anything with them currently). They have great programs available especially for young kids, including all types of dance & gymnastics. Last I heard they were building a new studio so they may have moved locations. Good Luck!

Hi S.! I've had my 4 y.o. daughter enrolled at Funastics in Gilbert for about 5 months and she LOVES it!!! They also offer dance classes, I think. The cost is reasonable, and they offer a discount for siblings. Abbey attends Saturday mornings at 10 am. It is a non competitive, fun class where the kids learn skills and build confidence. They do offer a free trial class to see if your child would enjoy it. I have tried the little gym and I didn't care for that, as the kids were in a room and I couldn't hear what was going on. At Funastics, we are sitting on the sidelines and can cheer on our gymnasts!
