Seeking a Birthday Gift Idea for My Mother-in-law

In 3 weeks, my mother-in-law will have her 90th birthday.
She is in a retirement home where almost everything she needs is provided. She has some signs of memory failure. We are 6 hours away from her and all are going to visit. I know pictures are good gifts, but what are some other good ideas to give to her? She has no refrigerator or cooking needs. We love her and want her to know it.

What can I do next?

What about a photo Calendar...my Grandma loves these and now hopes for them each year. What about practical things, new house shoes, pajamas, new throw pillows etc. Also, something that we did for my Grandpa-who lived in a retirement home as well, we bought wallflowers from Bath & Body works-he loved it that his Apt/Room smelled nice and different from the rest of the building. Hi Linda,

How about a Grandma Shirt with all your names embroidered on it? Or we can do a blanket too. I work for Nana Puddin and specialize in special presents...or keepsakes as we call them. Our website is www.nanapuddins.com. Let me know if we can help!

All great ideas! Maybe also one of those books (or make your own photo book with pics from her life and find the info. on the internet) that has info. about what things were like the year she was born?

What about something homemade, like cards/artwork from your children that she can display in her room (maybe add a small bulletin board to the gift that you can mount in her room for all the artwork and greeting cards she gets)? Maybe you could all go to one of those paint your own potter places and paint your hand prints & names on a vase for her room. Or, something similar, you could get one of those DIY fleece throw blankets (I've seen them everywhere - like JoAnn's) and have each child put their hand prints and name on it with fabric paint. If she's beginning to forget things, maybe a nice framed family tree (with photos if possible) of everyone to help her remember her family. I don't remember the website, but do a google search for companies that can make family trees for you.

I know everyone keeps sayng a nice blanket, but I had to suggest our absolute favorite blanket from Restoration Hardware. It is a fringed throw type blanket, but it is so nice and warm, but super soft and comfy! We need more just to prevent the fights around here. Check it out. ~A.~

Hi Linda-

What about a nice blanket? There are places that can put a picture of you all on there. Sorry dont know where. I think the mall? But I've seen them before and they are nice. Plus it will keep her warm through the season.

A nice cozy throw or blanket would be nice. If her sight is failing her, what about some books on tape? I bought my grandma some of those thin silk thermals (they are washable) and she loves them. They aren't any thicker than a regular tank but keep you very warm.

Just a little something that we did for my grandma on her 90th. We made a little "care package" of fun things for her big day. We gave her a tiara, a pink feather boa, a princess sweatshirt, a button stating it was her birthday, some fun special snacks and some other fun stuff. She loved it!! She wore the tiara all day and talked about it, well, she still talks about it two years later!

Good luck!!
