Sedatives Ok?

My pediatrician told me to give my child benadryl 45 minutes before we took off and then give her a bottle on asscent and descent of the plane. Make sure you do not over dose your baby though thinking it may help cuz it can be dangerous! Good luck!

beware of benadryl. my ped said sometimes it has the opposite effect on babies. you wouldn't want a wired uncomfortable baby!

Go with Benadryl. I am a first time mom and super particular and specific and picky and over protective with my daughter 7 1/2 months old) and I would do the same. It isn't going to hurt to give it to him, it isn't like you are giving it everyday and it will make him more comfortable; which is the point, right? Don't feel bad, she will be better off, and it isn't like you are giving her a narcotic.

as long as you don't fly all the time...I wouldn't worry about giving your baby an appropriate amount of benedryl. But make sure to ask a doctor and maybe try it out before hand though.

oh hunny go to your nearest CVS store look in the area that they have ear plugs and pick up AIR PLANE EAR PLUGS.....I used them on my then 9 month old and then 30 month old when we flew and they WORK like a charm also have a bottle to comfort or a binkie...

Personally I would not use Benadryl. First she is so young and second it can wind them up instead of calming them down.

Bottles or pacifiers can help to relieve the pressure and calm her down.

When we flew with our daughter, the pediatrician told us to use Benadryl. She also told us to have juice boxes or bottles on hand for take off and landings due to the ear popping thing. It worked wonders!! She didn't sleep the entire flight but, she was relaxed and quiet. We read books and played with a few toys, had a snack and before we knew it we were at the destination.
I would find out the right amount to give your daughter and test it out a week or so before you leave to make sure it doesn't have the opposite reaction and make her really active. And, sometimes I have heard that it doesn't help at all. Give yourself time to find something that will work before you leave.

When we flew with my daughter- 5 months at the time, we used dimetapp. Find out from your ped how much and test it about a week before (we did) to make sure it doesn't wind her up and she doesn't have an allergic reaction. It will probably make her drowsy and it may also help her ears if she has any congestion- it's not fun to fly when your ears are killing you. Also the bottle/breast or pacifier during take-off and landing.

Did you try giving her a bottle? This relieves the pressure in their ears. We flew when my son was 14 months, I gave him his bottle and did not have any problem, we had a 7 hour flight to St. Thomas! I personally would not give my son benadryl to sedate him, but I don't hardly give him cold medicine when he is sick. I think it makes their immune system weak because it does not have to work as hard or get built up enough. Try the bottle, if you haven't yet.

Talk to your ped. because when we flew with my now three year old who was just one at the time out ped told us that we could give him some benadryl. Be aware though because it can have the opposite effect and make her really hyper. That is what happened to out son and it made the trip much worse. We are flying in three weeks and have a three and a half year old and a 15 month old. I am a little nervous about it. I am going to keep checking the advice that you get. Good luck.

personally I think it's wrong to give your child drugs unless they need them. I'd say do the earplugs and the bottle (sucking helps loads). If YOUR ped says it's okay to use benadryl (which again I don't think is a good idea) then take it with you and use it as a LAST resort.
