I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Back in September I noticed in my basement mouse droppings. We ended up setting traps out sure enough we caught 5 small mice over a 2weeks time. So far I have not found any evidence of mice I still leave the traps out just in case. Last night I woke up at 1 am and heard a scratching noise comming from my closet. I didn't think anything of it and went back to sleep. Well this morning I got up and continued to hear the scratching noise , which was comming from inside my closet wall. I am freaked out that it could be more mice. My question is has anyone experienced mice in their homes if so how do you get rid of them for good. I can't tell you how mortified I am I live in a newer nice home that I keep very very clean. When I go home it just grosses me out that I could have mice living in between my walls. Any advice would be appreciated

So What Happened?

Thank you all for such good advice. Over the weekend I walked around the outside of the house and saw some small holes where comcast had to feed cable wire in through my siding into my circuit breaker box which is where I think they are getting in because when I went into the basement I opend the box and saw the evidence. I sealed up the opening on the outside with a whole tube of caulk. I also put out traps and took the advice of moth balls and the peppermint oil. I haven't heard any activity in the walls and the traps are still empty. If this doesn't work I will have Orkin come out. Thanks again for your help

Hi M.,
My name is A.,if I were you I would check the exterior of your home and look for the tiniest of holes, even if you think nothing could fit thru they prolly could and if you find holes stuff them with steel wool, other things you can do is put moth balls around the outside of your house mice hate the smell and they won't come near them along with racoons, possums, skunks, and all kinds of pests and rodents. For in the house you can use peppermint oil, not the candy flavoring but the real kind you buy at the health food store and saturate a cotton ball with them, they don't like the smell of that either. Good luck.

Hi M. my name is J. and I agree with Andrea go outside and look to see if there are any holes and plug them even the tiniest ones. Mice are very flexible rodents another thing that will help is to get either a pet rat or hampster but especially a rat. We used to have a mouse problem and we got a cat it didn't help for some reason my mom decided she wanted a pet rat and after she got two of them we never had a mouse problem again for some reason mice don't like rats. Whatever you decide to do you should act quickly cuz mice can chew through the wires in the walls and that can cause not only a lot of damage and be very expensive but can cause a seriouse fire and once a fire is in the walls it is hard to contain. Hope this works and your mice problem goes away.

We had a problem also. we called Terminex and had them come in. we purchased to fake rocks cost at about 90.00 They fill the rocks up with bait that attracts the mice to it. Once they eat the bait they die. I have a daycare so I needed something safe that could be out. we set one in the front of our home and one in the back. so far no problems this year.

Please avoid using moth balls or peppermint oil. Both are toxic and shouldn't be used around children or pets. Please google these to see that it's true and very dangerous.

We live in a wooded area and mice frequent the basement of our house. My solution...we got a cat. If you can I highly recommend it, preferably a female, they tend to be better hunters. I still find mice once in a while but they are always dead and I have actually seen her catch a few. Some people don't like cats but I prefer this to having poisons in the house and it has been effective.

Having mice in your home during winter months is not an indication that you are not a good housekeeper. It's an indication that you have an entrance port from the outside and the nasty little vermin came in to keep warm. Yes, the scratching noise in your walls is mice. Don't you hate it? The only way I know to get rid of them is to call Orkin or some other professional exterminator. Keep all of your food put away. Put everything a mouse may like (granola bars, boxes of cereal) in the fridge until you have lain traps. Don't leave food laying around other parts of the house.

When they come to spray and lay traps, they will tell you where in the house they have seen mouse activity, they will put down peanut smelling sticky traps, black bait traps and block the entrance holes so they mice can't get back in.

I'm with you, I am absolutely freaked out by the nasty little critters!

Good luck!

Actually, peppermint oil is only toxic if a child where to drink it from the bottle. A few drops are not going hurt. And if it is on a cotton ball, it is even less toxic, what child is going to actually eat the whole cotton ball any way! I doubt my kids would eat it all, and they eat everything.
