Hello! My son's K class does a different theme each month for Show and Share. I was rescued by you ladies (and gentlemen) last month for creative snack month, and here I am again!! This month it is science experiments. We need to come up with a simple experiment that he can do and explain in front of the whole class. We are also nearly the last to present, so vinegar and baking soda will be taken, I am sure! Any suggestions? A photo of each student and their experiment will be displayed at our science fair, in lieu of requiring the K kids to do full display boards (and there was much rejoicing!!), so something that looks interesting in a photo is good, too.

What can I do next?

When I was a kid I remember doing the ol' celery stalk in colored water experiment, but the other day, I saw a new and improved version! They took a white rose and made two slits up the stem of it, so it was divided in quarters and put each quarter stem in a different glass of colored water (one blue, one red, etc.). The color was drawn up into the rose just like the celery stalk, but the result was a rainbow colored rose! Kinda looked tie dyed! It was very cool!

I'd look on Pinterest. I've seen lots of things on there that would work for this.

I just googled "simple science experiments" and got this site...
http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/experiments.html

There are a lot of simple things that use ice, salt eggs, crayons, etc.

You might want to check pinterest too!

Best wishes!

Do a web search for Magic School Bus experiments. We get a monthly science kit that has easy experiments. My 1st grader and 4 year old love them. They have magnets, states of matter, rainbows, and a bunch of others.

Yay! How fun! First, I'd ask your kid what they're interested in. Right now my dd is interested in planets and the human body... So, I'd ask if there's something he'd like to know more about. Then, go from there. I think it will be more fun and interesting--and the lesson will stick better--if it's something he's actually interested and involved in. There are always the old "stand-by" experiments, but I would love to come up with something a bit more creative! Of course, I am a self-proclaiming Nerd (and a scientist by education and career), so I really look forward to science experiments with my kid(s)! Good luck and have fun, mama!

Many years ago, my son did a 5th grade science entry and won first place.

Use a white carnation, split the stem up several inches, place red or blue or green food coloring in separate slender vials of water. Set them side by side and place each half of the stem in each vial of the water. Within a day the carnation will turn the two colors.

We used to have spirea bushes at home, would take cuttings and place them in colored water and watch them change from white to pink or blue or green. I'm sure other flowers would do the same, but the carnation lasts longer than some flowers.

My kiddo just checked a book out from the library called, "Smash It! Crash It! Launch It!"
He loves it & does many of the experiments on his own. It's a fun book and he has loved all the ones he's done.
