Hello, I have to switch insurances and the only hospital that my current OB delivers at (that is on my insurance), is Salt Lake Regional. The hospital itself has low ratings, but has anyone delievered there and if so, can you tell me about your experiences? (both pos. and negative) Thank you!!

p.s. I delivered my first at LDS Hospital and was very happy with how things went

What can I do next?

I delivered at Salt Lake Regional two years ago and was very pleased, especially with the nurses helping me with breastfeeding. As with you, before I delivered, I was disappointed that my insurance had me delivering there but I was pleasantly surprised at the good care I received there. Don't worry - it's all good!

I too loved my stay at salt lake regional. I've delivered at 4 hospitals in 3 states, and This was my favorite by far. The nursing staff is very supportive of any and all decisions/plans you may have with delivery, even offering suggestions for some of the lesser used ones! They came to me with a birthing ball (I turned them down), and showed my DH the upmost care- especially when finding out it was HIS first. Birthing rooms are spacious, and private! They encourage bonding, allowing my LO to nurse for a full hour before they wisked her off for her first bath, which they not only assisted my DH with, but took plenty of photo's.
I also appreciated that they didn't try to force my labor in anyway, as I had a strange delivery (my contractions pushed up instead of down). And they have a wonderful security system! Day two when I was walking around pushing DD in they basinet we got within 10 feet of the doors to the wing and the whole place went into lockdown (they put little ankle monitors on the newborns as soon as they cut the cord) and they triple checked that our ID bracelets matched at that time as well at check-out time (mind you we were the only ones there at the time) to make sure we had the right baby.

The only 'issue' I had were that the bathrooms were a little worn- hard water had eaten away at the mouth of the faucet in the tub off the delivery room.
Mind you this is all coming from someone who has always avoided IHC facilities at all costs.

That is one of my favorite hospitals. Quieter, calmer and less frantic than the others in Salt Lake. As always though, your care provider sets the tone and will be the biggest factor in whether you have a good experience.

HI-- is that W. C or me speaking?!! i too delivered my first son at LDS & had a fantastic experience! Clean, modern, good ratings, jetted tub, etc...

i, too, had switched insurances (due to husband's job bene's change) --actually while i was pregnant with my second son after we had planned every detail for LDS. i was near frantic! My midwife delivers only at LDS or SL Regional. i nearly delivered at home as opposed to going to what i expected to be an outdated-insane-asylum-looking-institution!

Anyway, i recommend you take a tour! It isn't what it seems.

SL Regional also has the jetted tubs, private rooms, warm blankets, professional staff-- your doc or doula or midwife and whomever (if anyone besides yourself) you decide will be there to support you during the deliver. You can have music or movies or whatever you like. My delivery room was spacious and intimate...the recovery room had nice big windows for plenty of sunlight and plenty of space for visiting- a cot for my 4 year old & husband who spent one night. I chose to go with my newborn to the nursery for ear checks and first bath and all the little check ups they like to do on the newborns... there was the option to stay in the room, too, though if i had wanted to just relax and sleep. As far as i could tell the security was acceptable-- luckily i didn't have to find out. The food was pretty good-- i had people bringing me food fomr outside the hospital, too, though, so i don't recall really what was on the menu.

The shower in the recovery room wasn't the very best- the nurses did offer to for me to switch rooms because of it- wasn't bad enough to switch rooms.

The nurses were all very nice and caring-- all except for the phlebotomist who came in not more than 30 minutes after the delivery and turned on all the lights super bright (at 3am)-- her boss got a letter from me!!

Also, you may like to know: parking leaves a lot to be desired for your guests!!

Good luck! It's such a wonderfully major event-- hopefully it will be as unique as your first child birth!!

Congratulations!
