17 Weeks Pregnant & Seeking Attentive OB-GYN Who Delivers at Kennestone Hospital

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and have not been that happy with my current OB office. I started going there since I found out I was pregnant as my former OB didn't deliver in a hospital close by. I find that my OB office's communicaton is not that great and I feel like I'm always the one to find out basic information from them (versus them offering me the information). I am looking to deliver my baby at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta so would need to have an office that delivers there. The gender of my OB is not important. I'm really looking to find someone attentive, thorough and sensitive to the needs of a first time mom. Thank you so much!!

Thank you all for such great responses! In addition to posting my question on mamasource, I've researched other sites and have talked to friends/co-workers. I cancelled my original appt with the office and have been seeing Dr. Mary Pitcher at Pitcher Robbins Shin & Street. Love her - love this office! Thank you all again!

I used to see Dr. Kevin Windom, at OB-Gyn Associates.

###-###-####
72 Plaza Way North West
Marietta, GA 30060

He's great, and the other doctors were all nice. I switched to an intown doctor when I moved, but Windom is the head of Obstetrics at Kennestone and he's wonderful.

Marietta OB/GYN is my recommendation. Dr. Scott delivered my oldest and Dr. Klein delivered my second. This group was wonderful to me, as I came to them for help after losing three pregnancies. They helped me sort out what was wrong and got me the help I needed. I also was high risk with my oldest child and they were all wonderful to work with. They also have an office in Towne Lake that is always less crowded.

Hi H.,

I LOVED my ob/gyn. He was awesome and I couldn't have been more pleased with him. The only thing I would change is the hospital. He ONLY goes to Kennestone. I had heard of good things about Kennestone (at least the OB floor) but I was VERY disappointed. Although most of the nurses were wonderful, I had two who were so amazingly rude I could not believe it. Sadly, the nurse who was with me for the actual delivery told me to disregard what my doctor had told me because he was a man and could understand what I was feeling. Kennestone does not have a specialty pediatric unit, and they do not have a regular nursery. When my first was born in another town, I wanted him in the room with me the whole time although the nurses encouraged me to allow him to spend a little time in the nursery so I could get some rest before going home. This was a wise suggestion that after I got home, I did regret I did not take. With my last one, born at Kennestone, I had a c-section and the pain was unbelieveable. Despite having presriptions for pain and sleep aid (which I normally would have been quite pleased to take) I went without either because there was no way I wanted my mind foggy from narcotics when I was primary care giver of my newborn. With no medication it was excruciatingly painful to move position or get up. As a result, my recovery was much slower than it should have been. Although my doctor had written orders to take my baby to the special care nursery, the nurses said they did not have a nursery for this. Now understand, I wanted my baby with me almost all of the time. I was only requesting 2-3 hours at night--I was refused. Finally, about 4 days after he was born, one compassionate nurse offered to take my baby to the nursery herself for a few hours so I could finally have something for pain. Her suggestion was exactly what I had requested of previous nurses but was refused. I was a new person after just a few hours. It was enough to allow me to get a restful sleep and turn as needed which is of huge importance when recovering from a c-section. If I became pregnant again, it would indeed be a dilemma because I loved my doctor so much, but I would absolutely NOT go back to Kennestone. I have many friends which live close by (In Kennesaw, Acworth, Marietta and Dallas) who chose Northside instead. Their experiences were so much better. Northside is right beside Scottish Rite, they have a full time functional regular nursery for newborns but also have in room care so it is your choice. I would never choose to put my baby in the nursery regularly, even after a c-section, but you have no way of knowing what the circumstances might be that make it desirable for brief periods. My doctor was James Sutherland (Kennestone OB/GYN) and if you decide you are sure you want to go to Kennestone, you won't find a better doctor, but I would talk to as many of your friends as possible and get opinions from people who have been to BOTH hospitals. You then might want to find one that goes to Northside.

Hi H.:
Congratulations on your first pregnancy! You are doing very, very good by seeking a health care provider that meets you needs, this is very important since is your body, you baby & your birth!
I am a birth doula and I insist on you to search all your pregnancy & birth choices, not just your health care provider but the hospital also.
I greatly recommend you Kay Johnson, CNM (Nurse midwife) http://www.isisobgyn.com/, she is GREAT! She attends births at North Fulton Regional Hospital (birthing center) where you can also have a waterbirth (and that is the ONLY place, except having a homebirth, where you can BIRTH in water in the Atlanta area)!!! The drive is very much worth it!
There is also a great weekend childbirth class coming up at the end of april (26-27th) that is going to be great, is called "Celebrate Birth". Contact me if you, or anybody that you may think is interested or would like more information.

Hope all this info help guide you toward a beautiful pregnancy and great birth of your baby :o)

I LOVE Ob/gyn Associates! Dr. Terry Kelly was absolutely awesome as an Ob. And although I chose to have one of the CNMs on staff to deliver my little girl, I felt completely at ease in the hands of the entire staff. The wait for my appointments were fairly short, the waiting room very inviting, as are the actual patient rooms. The staff is wonderful- working with me on everything from my adamant desire not to have a c-section, to helping me work out a flexible pay schedule for everything that my insurance wouldn't pay. The only complaint that I could have at all is that you need to specifically ask for a Doctor or a CNM to call you when making a nurse line call. The nursing assistants-though well meaning- just don't have the knowledge that you really need as a first time mom going through some pretty scary changes. Oh- and this group was recommended to me by a friend that also likes Ob/gyn Associates. She has used Dr. Windom now for the last 15 years..good luck

I would recommend checking into OBGYN Associates. They are located right down the road from Kennestone. I have been seeing (Dr. Espy) for many years and also saw many of the other Docters in this prectice while I was pregnat.

They also have 4 or 5 nurse midwifes that work in conjunctions with the different docters. I would recommend seeing one of the midwifes as well as they tend to have more time to spend with you.

Their number is: ###-###-####.

Hope you find what your looking for...

When I first moved to GA in June 2006, I was already 3 months pregnant and really liked my previous doctor. When I went to a particular OB-GYN here in GA, I was soo dismayed. I knew I would have to find someone else. Thank goodness I found OB-GYN associates. I love them. I met almost all the doctors so that I would hopefully be familiar with who was on call when I delivered--and I was. I found the link to their site: http://www.obgynmarietta.yourmd.com/
I delivered at Kennestone hospital in Marietta so this sounds like the place for you. I asked all sorts of questions as a first time mom and everyone was really great. You also have doctors and midwives since people are different on who they prefer. Good luck, I'd love to hear how it goes.

I've been with OB/GYN Associates since my first pregnancy in 2004 and love the group. And I went on recommendation of many, many people in the medical office where I work. Dr. Tackitt delivered both of my babies. All the doctors and midwives there will take great care of you, whether things get complicated or not. Highly recommend!

Best to you. Warmest congratulations!

Marietta obgyn affliates. They have 6 doctors in the practice, and I recommend Dr Taghechian (Tag)(female), Dr. Mull, and Dr Scott. I am actually working with Dr Alarcan on trying for a second child and he has been good. He was new to the practice when I was pregnant with my first so I never really saw him. Anyways, they are all really nice but personality wise prefer the ones mentioned. You will eventually see everyone. They are located directly next to Kennestone. They also have a Towne Lake office in Woodstock and an office in West Cobb. Best of luck! Oh, and I loved my experience at Kennestone!

I also use Marietta OB/Gyn Associates at the recommendation of several friends. Dr. Bobby Tackett is awesome! I was in the delivery room with one of my best friends & have seen him in action. Also, my friends Mom, who is a nurse practitioner in the field uses him.

Hi H.,

First off, I have had babies at both Northside and Kennestone and have to say that Kennestone was way better all around. I also personally know a mother-baby nurse there and really liked the small, attentiveness that you get when you aren't sharing a nurse with a million other people at the same time.
I changed to Kennestone OB/GYN- there is a Woodstock and a Marietta office. Dr. McLendon is about the best and friendliest GYN I have ever met. I also really like Dr. Bardwell (he delivered my son) and the rest are great too. There are also midwives and I like that they always have a midwife and a doctor on call at the hospital so you aren't stuck if the doc is off delivering another baby at the same time. Be prepared for a big hug from Dr. McLendon if you choose him- he truly is a sweet and thorough doctor.
One thing that I noticed though is that MOST doctors don't offer as much information as we "internet and information junkies" would like. Finding a doctor that will answer your questions attentively is what your goal should be because to my knowledge there is no doctor out there that will sit you down and say... "Now this is how it is all gonna go down...". They can't because every pregnancy and labor and delivery is somewhat different. My advice is to learn all you can, make a birth plan that you THINK you would like and expect the unexpected- I ended up with c-sections unexpectedly. Remember, a healthy and happy baby and mommy are the ultimate goal! Good luck!

H.,
I'm not sure who your current OB is, but I have been going to Marrietta OB-GYN Affiliates for years and they deliver at Kennestone. They delivered both of my boys. The main office is next to Kennestone, but I liked the West Cobb satellite office because it was less crowded. While pregnanat, you rotate among all doctors to become familiar with all of them. The only downside is that you don't get to pick which docotor delivers your baby, it is the one that is on call. Congratulations on your pregnancy and best wishes for a happy and healthy baby.

I'll add my vote for OB-GYN Associates (note: OB-GYN Associates and OB-GYN Affiliates are two separate practices, though they share office space in their Woodstock locations). Their main office is in Marietta (right across the street from Kennestone), but they also have an office on Towne Lake Pkwy. I used them when my son was born and now as I'm pregnant again. My favorite midwife is Monica Clark, but all the doctors and midwives are nice. (the midwives act the same as doctors except that only doctors handle surgeries and major complications)

I also strongly recommend the 4 week childbirth class that is taught by their midwives. They cover diet, the changes happening to your body, stages of labor, relaxation techniques, pain management options (epidural vs. natural vs. somewhere in-between), etc, all in an informative way (not a "this is the only best way" way). It is for ladies and their husbands or support people, and it was worth the $100 just for what my husband learned. It helped both of us feel more confident in what was happening and going to happen.

Good luck finding a new doctor, sounds like there are plenty of good choices out there!

I went to Dr. Romero Nicholson he's located on Church St Ext near Kennestone. I liked him because he has a midwife which is his wife he has children of his own (been there done that) and he delivers his babies not a fill in doctor he delivered by last child 4 yrs ago and he shows up. I loved that about him during delivery I had some complications and I was having problems he never showed an ounce of panic on his face so I didn't panic he as I truly believe saved my life and my son's life to me he's a wonderful person. If I had it to do all over again it would be him, if I had another child he'd be my doctor. He has a website cobbobgyn.com check him out maybe he's what you are looking for in a doctor. I was sick once with before delivery and he showed up everytime and returned my calls. I was very upset about a situation and I can recall it I cried in his office I was in my last month and he was very kind to me took the time to listen and talk mainly listen and that's what I needed at the time his staff was always very kind and helpful. I had changed to him when I was about my 7th month since I had moved to far from my obgyn and he had no problems with me changing he didn't say well drive it to the other one like some others had said and refused me care. My best wishes to you all will be fine.
