Riding the School Bus? Am I Too Proctive?

I am new at the whole riding the school bus thing. My 5 yr old is going to start riding the school bus after school. I am worried that the change is going to be too much for her so what I have decided to do is have a cousin ride with her, but the school says that she (the cousin) has to have permission from the principal at shcool. Am I overreacting or should I push the issue of someone riding home with her?

What can I do next?

Dear M.,
i remember all too well when that time came for me with my kids. i do understand just how you feel about your baby. i think if you really want someone to ride with her on the bus, then yes you should see what the principle says first , but if that doesn't work then i would suggest that you have a nice chat with the bus driver & see if it would be ok that she sits up front where she will feel comfortable & you can feel at ease until she gets used to riding the bus with confidence.I don't think you're overreacting , just being an extra protective mom & a good one . i did the same thing with my kids & the bus driver was very nice & understanding about it & that really helped ease my worries on that. So good luck to you & your little one.

Well I consider myself to be over-protective at times-So I understand your concern. In fact I've known people that don't let their kids ride the bus anymore b/c they picked up bad habits from other kids on the Bus so it is a valid concern. I think in the least you could get permission for the cousin to ride at least until your daughter gets used to it. -Good Luck

Hi M.,

It is so natural to have concerns about your 5 yr old riding the bus home. If the principal will let the cousin ride the bus with her I don't see why you can't ask. You can't put a price on peace of mind. Maybe it will only need to be for a week till both of you feel comfortable with the idea. Talking with the bus driver about your concerns is a good idea too. We have a great relationship with our bus driver and they are really good about looking out for the little ones. Even requesting that she sit in the first seat behind the busdriver could be a possibility. She will be close to the front (free from other kid destractions and the bus driver can see her easily). Just a few thoughts. You both will make this transition well. Your child will respond to the situation as you do, so be positive about the experience and it will be a good one. Blessings, A.

I think it's normal to be concerned. My 4 year old will start Pre-K in August, and my husband wants to hire someone to go with her! (a bodyguard!) I know he's just kidding, but if we COULD actually send someone with her, (meaning if the school would allow it), he would do it!

Get permission. It will make you feel a lot better, and shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

trust your gut. She is your child and that is that. Is this cousin a student or an adult? If a student of the school why do they need permission to ride a district bus to your house. They are your family and now going to your house after school each day. IF this cousin is an adult why can't they just drive her home? HAs your daycare situation changed? who will be there to great her? could they not drive/walk to the school?

As for staying home. You will adjust at first but I promise you, you will love it. It so worth it. I thought I would go back to work after he went to school but now I am busier than ever.. I am now doing some contract work here at home.

Good luck
