Relocating to Lorain County

We're moving back to Cleveland after 5 HORRIBLE years in Michigan (the economy here is WORSE than you've heard on the news, believe me!). We lived in Parma before we moved up here. Now, we're looking to relocate to Lorain County, but want to know more about the schools and different cities first. We don't want to live in Lorain, Elyria or Avon Lake -- we'd rather live in a less congested area. Right now, our "list" includes Amherst, North Ridgeville, Avon, Columbia Station, Eaton Twp., Grafton, Sheffield Lake, Wellington. My hubby grew up in Bay Village, but I know that areas often change, so we'd like your thoughts on these areas. If you live in any of these areas and can offer any advice, that would be GREAT! My kids will be in 2nd, 5th, 7th, and 9th grade. I'm also looking for a church with contemporary charismatic services with LOTS of kids activities - right now we go to an Assembly of God church. Thanks so much and GO INDIANS!!! (can't wait to put my chief wahoo back up in the front yard!!!!)

What can I do next?

I live in Carlisle Township near the Lorain County Airport(Elyria mailing address). It is between Elyria and LaGrange. Keystone school district which is a good school. I have the convenience of the rural area with the cities of Elyria, Amherst, Grafton, Oberlin, LaGrange and Lorain all within a few miles. We have lived here going on 12 years. We love the area. There are several nearby churches. Church of the Open Door, First Baptist Church, Good Hope Baptist, LaPorte Methodist Church, Mennonite Church of Peace etc., etc. Are you looking to buy or rent? If you would like to you can e mail me and maybe I can help you in your search.

Welcome Back

Hi Debbie, welcome to Ohio when you get here.We live in holmes
county. Our children go to West Holmes School district. Schools are nice here I think and churches too. Not a big city here and nice communities. I hear of crime
in Cleveland ( in the city) but I don't know about other places around cleveland. I'd do some more checking though before you make your decision.
Good luck,
T. J

My vote is for Medina. We love it here. Great community. So--- many churches to choose from. Great schools and rec center. Deb

Avon and Columbia are nice and growing. Columbia is like living in the country. I know there is great church in Columbia. Can't remember the name, my hair stylist goes there. I have friend that lives there too. She really loves it there. She is into horses. My in-laws live in Avon. It has nice shopping facilities there. A big mall near by too. Has really grown population wise. I think a lot of westsiders ended up in Avon area. I don't like North Ridgeville. Eaton is supposed to be nice. IT used to have a country feel to it. I guess out of those you listed I like Columbia and Avon. Schools are pretty good and I believe has a good support from the community. There are a lot of schools in Ohio that are not getting levies passed to keep programs in some of the schools. SO moving to a community that is passing school levies is important. I know Avon has been pretty good. Has built new buildings to handle the increase in enrollment. Not sure about Columbia. Good luck to you. The economy is tough in Cleveland too.

Hi D.,
Welcome back to the area. I can't say too much about the schools, my kids are young and not in school yet. Though I do teach and did my student teaching in Avon and I was really inpressed. I also know Amherest and Midview schools are good. But I am responding to your search for a new church. I attend Harvest Ridge Assembly of God in North Ridgeville. I have been there for 15 years now. It is a very family oriented with a wonderful children's and youth program. Check out the website www.harvestridge.net Best of luck to you!

Hi! I live in Rocky River now, but we are looking to get a bigger house. Avon has great school systems right now and is still a very spread out city. We looked at N.Ridgeville and the town is verys similar but the school systems are not that great and they are packed with kids and not passing levys. If your interested in sending your children to Private schools then you are open to anywhere, but if you are thinking PS then I would limit your move to Avon, Avon Lake, or Amherst. All 3 of those have great school systems. I am a teacher at North Olmsted so I am familiar with the area and the schools. Good luck with your move:)

Yay! Bay Village! I grew up there too. Anyway, North Ridgeville is quickly growing and becoming quite a nice area. It is now a frequent stop when we drive up north to visit family. I would say that your best bet is to look up the schools on-line and view their ratings. Being a Military wife it sometimes the only way to really know for certain how well a place ranks. Realtors are little help because they have to remain objective.

My husband is originally from the Elyria area (Keystone HS) and his family still lives there. He suggests Grafton-Midview or Avon. He says Wellington (a small farming community) is a very close community and the kids may have trouble adjusting. North Ridgeville has been on the decline since the 90s. Most of these people are moving to Avon because of the better school systems. LaGrange might be a good option too. The high school there was recently rebuilt about 4 years ago (very high tech). The community is small and quiet. LaGrange is also roughly 15 min from everything (malls, highways, ect). The school district is Keystone. As far as the churches in the area, I won't be any help as his family isn't all that church going. I hope this helps and we get there once every few months or so (not often enough) so if you have any questions email me ____@____.com or send me a message on here. Good luck! ~A.
