I went to go see a dermatologist last friday due to my lips being so dry all the time and wrinkled. Not wrinkles around the mouth/lip area but the area on the lip itself. The dematologists told me I had fungus and prescribed an oitment to use twice a day. Since using it, it has dried my lips out more to the point where I cannot stand it unless I put lip balm on. Previous to that I had been using periodically carmex (for years) and I wondering if I caused damage to my lips. I wondering if she took me for my money. I have a wedding coming up in a month and I need to fix this issue. Any suggestions.

The best thing I have found is the cream for breastfeeding, Laniosh.

This past winter my son got horrible crackled lips and along the sides of his lips. I tried prescription cream, everything. I did some searching and several people said to try the Laniosh cream and it worked perfectly.

I had this problem really badly, and finally found a solution on Google. I was totally addicted to lip balm. Long term use of petroleum based lip balm will cause your lips to lose the ability to hydrate themselves naturally because the petroleum forms a barrier that prevents moisture from getting into your lips. They will grow drier over time. The solution to this is to use a lip balm that does not contain petroleum. I found a really good yet inexpensive one at a local chain hair salon, and its made a huge difference. Good luck!

I'm not sure if your Dr. mentioned proper hydration. I have been always told by specialists and every day people, "Make sure to drink plenty of fluids!" I find that if I drink enough water that there is no need for lip balm at all. Aside from feeling thirsty, my lips and cuticles are the first signs of dehydration. My lips crack and my cuticles sort of "peel". Once I see that, I grab my water bottle and chug. Usually they get better after a day or so AND I notice a marked difference in how I feel. (Usually more energy and less cranky.) Hope this helps, if anything else, the water will make your skin more soft and glowing for you upcoming wedding!

Burt's Bees has a medicated lip balm that is great.
If you really do have a fungus, I don't know anything about that...but if you use the ointment and them put balm over it after it sets for a minute, maybe it's fine.

Mine have been like this for what seems like forever. I don' t have a quick fix for you, but if the medication is making things worse, I would stop using it.

Things you might think about: Do you have any fillings in your teeth, metal in a bridge or crown, or a permanent retainer? Any metal in your mouth that you are sensitive to can cause really severe chapped lips. (This is part of my problem.)

The other thing is food allergies. This will vary from person to person, but is there EVER a day when your lips don't feel quite so bad? Think of what you normally eat/drink that you didn't have that day! It can range from acidic things (this bothers my daughter- tomatoes, oranges, balsamic vinegars) to things you may not suspect like gluten and corn. Since stopping corn (of all things!!) my lips have gotten somewhat better. Today I noticed they tingled just a bit when I had some grapes, so I immediately stopped eating them, but my lips are dry, dry, dry tonight from it, so I obviously had a reaction.

Do avoid chemicals on your face and lips, and petroleum products. I use plain extra virgin coconut oil on my face and lips that that has made an improvement. You can buy it in most stores now in a little tub (look at Whole Foods, or order from Vitacost.com)

I hope this helps. A food elimination seems like your best bet though, and if you have a lot of metal in your mouth, finding an integrative holistic dentist to help you get that removed safely.

my daughter and i have this problem, but its not a candida infection with us, we just lick our lips too much. I have only found ONE thing that works. Its called egyptian magic, it is only 3 ingredients, olive oil, B. propolis, and royal jelly....it has a million other uses too, but thats what i use it for. (it also works wonders in diaper rash), its about 20 bucks for a pint, but i bought mine 3 years ago and still barely dented it, and i use it every day.
