Question About 2 Year Old's Teeth and Referral

i am a hygienist and my husband is a dentist. we have never heard of an antibiotic staining teeth gray. if a tooth is damaged by a sickness or an antibiotic it is when a tooth is still forming and still under the gum tissue. chances are your son hit his tooth at some point and you just noticed it starting to turn gray at the same time he was having an antibiotic, if it stays gray and you are worried about it you should be able to take him to a general dentist to have an xray to determine if any work is necessary.

I take my kids to Dr. Haider in Carrollton. I have an over-active 5 year old, a "needy" 8 year old and an 11 year old that I take there. They have been wonderful with all my kids! My youngest had grey teeth, but that was a result of her falling and her teeth dying. :( They were able to pull her teeth without too much problem. :) They have very friendly office staff and a playroom for the kids while they wait! It really helps put my kids at ease. :)

I am not sure if this will help you, but my 16 month old(now 2 yr old) had the same problem with lots of medicines going on at one time for a while when all his little 4 front teeth were stained grayish black ( not too dark, but had lines) I was really worried and his pediatrician told me that it was due to the dyes in certain medicine and also could be due to the iron vitamin drops that I used to give him. She said it was nothing to worry about and that given some time, it would go away....and it did! His teeth are fine now.

i'd make the same referral to you that I did for a mom earlier - Dr. Charles (Chuck) Medearis on Josey just north of Beltline (street is called Country Club Dr.). He's excellent with patients of all ages - seen me and my husband for years, and sees my near-3 yr old for happy visits. She loves him and he'll take the time to show and explain the instruments and lets her handle them and shows her her teeth in the hand-held mirror, etc. She's not the least bit scared of him, or even of the noises of the air hose or the water squirter. I don't know about the gray though. I'll watch for that with my own daughter who is now on antibiotics for a touch of pneumonia (never has taken them before, so I don't know how she'll react to them).

Some medicines have a side effect of making teeth "gray" almost "transparent" looking. I know this as it happened to me when I was younger. Since high school I've had to have "caps" or veneers over my teeth. I haven't heard of recent medications doing this, but I'd check to make sure.

I would call your Dr. or pharmacist immediately and ask if graying teeth is a side effect of the antibiotic. If so, I'd ask for a replacement (if any) that does not cause this to happen.

This is probally not from the antibiotics but more likely from a normal everyday fall that you didnt think anything about. Hitting the mouth at just the right point that "kills" the tooth. My little one did it just last week. Depending on which Dr you go to will determine what they do. Some drs want to pull the dead tooth and even some surrounding teeth, others take a more watch and wait stands, I lean more towards the watch and wait, I just cant see pulling teeth on my three year old and waiting two years for the adult teeth to come in :(

Choosing what is right for our kids is never easy. It is even worse when the Dr's dont agree. Follow your Mommy gut on this one. Best of luck!
