Prolapsed Uterus

Yesterday I noticed something felt different and discovered that it seemed like my vaginal walls had "fallen". I told my mom about it and she said it sounded like a prolapsed uterus and to call the ob/gyn on Monday morning. I delivered a 10 lb. baby last July-my second child. I have been carrying him aroud a lot ever since and now he's at 30 lbs. I am at a normal weight. I've read that being overweight can contribute to this problem. My mom is coming to help me tomorrow, so I don't have to lift him until I find out if it is ok or not(husband out of town). Has anyone experienced this or something like it or have any advice for me? I would greatly appreciate it. I'm not overly concerned, but a little worried. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Good advice from Kathie.
You can grease everything with KY and shove it back in. if it doesn't hurt you to do that. (we do that sometimes at the hospital if necessary)
start doing lots of Kegal's and soft situps to tighten the abdomin and pelvic wall muscles.
can be surgically corrected. or you can wear an egg shaped thing in your vagina to hold everything in and up. it is called a pessiary(sp?). it is non-surgical intervention but has to be prescribed by a doctor.
but yes, with birth, large babies and straining, and picking up heavy things (including your little dumpling) can contribute to this. not an emergency unless you cannnot urinate. and make sure to try to empty your bladder when you go. a prolapsed bladder has a harder time emptying all the way because of the angle and prolapse. it will sometimes retain just enough urine to start a UTI, because a little bit is always left and incubates, so to speak. drink lots of fluids.
see the doctor as soon as possible.
good luck,
L.

My aunt had 2 10lb babies and also had a prolapsed bladder. She could see it sticking out or her vagina slightly. Her surgery was easy and she recovered nicely...good luck to you!

You could have a prolapsed bladder which I think it more likely the case. It happens MUCH more frequently than the uterus. I have a partially prolapsed bladder and that's how I described it when it first happened. I used to work in Women's Services in a hosp. and the sling procedure for the bladder is done all the time. If you have to have it done, you will do great! Good luck and keep us posted.

P.S. Kudos on delivering a 10 lb. baby!!

A friend of mine had that and she had surgery to lift the uterus back to its position. She also found sex to be better once the surgery was done. I definately would have it checked out to see if you need surgery.

I had three big 10 pound boy's [not all at once!] and the uterus and bladder dropped. It was very painful, my OBGYN recommended a hysterectomy because of the pain and other problems I was having, I was 24 at the time. The "problems" were worse than he thought. I ended up with a complete hysterectomy, instead of the repair he hoped for. I have never regretted it, I lived to enjoy the children God gave me. In the end it will be you choice to conquer your fear and find the best doctor to advise you and hopefully repair the damage. Remember doctors are educated but they are humans and some are smarter than others.

I have a friend who is very overweight who had that happen to her and she had to have a hysterectomy. But it is a rare condition. It might be a hernia. but you should go to the dr because if untreated it can harm you. (I dont remember for sure how but my friend told me it could have hurt her if she did not get to the dr).

Sorry Im not much help, good luck

Hi Carolyn, I realize every case is different but mine also started after my second child was born and she was not a big baby, 6lb 12oz. If being overweight contributes to the problem, that was not my case. My ob/gyn gave me an option on having uteran suspension surgery or to just live with it the way it was. I did choose surgery b/c mine caused pain and problems during intercourse, not to mention you feel like your insides are comning out anytime you go to the bathroom (bm), lift heavy things/kids, jump, etc. Results for me were good and you definately have to have help aftwards if you have the surgery b/c for a while there is NO lifting anything or you will undo what the Dr. has just fixed.

Hope sharing my situation helps you a little and you get your question answered at the Dr.'s on Monday.

Thanks for your time.

A prolapsed uterus is when your uterus starts to fall down into your vagina. It can be different stages, from mild to severe. If this is what you are experiencing, your doctor will tell you to do kegels if you are in the mild stage(which would probably be the case since you have only 2 children). For the other stages they recommend everything from a mesh sling to a hysterectomy(Don't panic, I'm sure your not there!). I was a stage 2 after 6 pregnancies and my doctor recommended a hysterectomy, the urologist recommend a mesh sling. After much research, I decided both recommended options were not for me!Too many risks! I opted for a pesserary(kind of like a diaphragm, looks like a thin donut). I have had this for about a year and it has worked great.

I've probably given you way more info then you need but did so to educate you and any other ladies experiencing problems in this area.

My friend had that happen and it was too painful for her so she opted for a surgery. Her recovery was about 4-6 weeks of not lifting, but she is fine now. She equated the pain with the kind after having a baby vaginally. I hope this helps. I have also heard of the pessary too.

My Mom had the same...and she is tiny, tiny! I think the most that she ever weighed (not pregnant) is 110. But she had three kiddos all over 8lbs. I cannot remember if it was surgically corrected, but I do remember in the beginning she was told to not lift heavy objects. Just try to rest(!) by sitting or staying off your feet, and avoid lifting...probably nothing over 5lbs. Good luck!
