Probiotic Products for Children

Hi Everyone,
My daughter is seven and has had bowel movement problems for all her life. She's been seeing a Pediatric Gastro for two years, but nothing seems to help. His answer has been Miralax every day. I'm sorry, but that doesn't seem like a permanent answer to me and certainly not worth two years of $50 copays! I thought I'd reach out to the moms here because I always seem to get great answers and ideas from you. I've heard a lot about these probiotic products that supposedly regulate your system. My daughter is allergic to penicillin (can't eat yogurt without breaking out into spots), so I'm wondering if the whole problem might stem from bacteria... you know, no bad bacteria, but no good bacteria either. Does anyone know anything about probiotics like Align? Are they safe for children? More importantly are they safe for children who are allergic to penicilin? Many thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

This line is great......

but I would HIGHLY recommend ultimate aloe juice. I have the same issues and if I drink 2 ounces of aloe juice I go everyday.

I reccommend the strawberry kiwi. It's really yummy. I put some in ice water just to give the ice water a little flavor.

Good luck.

My son used to use a probiotic his pediatrician recommended made for kids called Florastor Kids. You can buy it over the counter, got mine from our local privately owned pharmacy. Cannot remember the exact price but it was not expensive. It is a powder you mix with water, juice, or any non-carbonated drinks. The ingredients do not contain penicilin but I know it can be in many things. Here is the website if you want to give it a glance. Good luck to you

Florastor kids is a great product. You can also get them Acidophkids through Vitacost. In addition make sure you add fiber to her diet if you haven't done so already.

Garden of Life makes a good kids probiotic, you can probably find others designed for kids as well - penicillin allergy shouldn't be an issue as probiotics don't use that type of bacteria. You may also want to see if your child has food sensitivities or intolerances that are fostering the intestinal imbalance. Probiotics sound like a great approach to try.

My daughter is 15 months old her doctor recommended a probiotic called Fem-Dophilus because she has problems with constipation. It is a probiotic especially for women and I was told to break open the capsules into a tupperware container and then sprinkle a pinch on her food once a day.

It is designed to be kept refrigerated, so I buy it at Whole Foods. You can order it from Amazon, but the reviews there said it doesn't always get to you cold. We just started using it so I can't tell you how well it's working, but you might check into it.

Hey A.
What is your daughter eating? Does she have flour products? dairy? I'd keep her away from them and lots of fresh whole grains, veggies and green lentils at least once a week.
The kids probiotics tend to have fructose and sugar and other stuff which isn't impressive. There is one company, NOW that makes a 25 billion that I use for my daughter. I open up the capsule (veggie cap) and pour it into a little water and stir till it dissolves. She drinks it and can tolerate it well.
Does she eat sauerkraut? that is a probiotic as are other pickled veggies. If you can make some with just some sea salt it'll be the healthier way to go, pretty simple too.

Good probiotics are wonderful, just hard to find. The only ones I have truly seen results with are Florify. I would also suggest Fiberwise. This will help her have regular movements and also start the healing process if something is wrong. My 8, 9 and 22 year old all believe in taking these products because the have felt the difference for them self. Both products come from Melaleuca an online store. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I have been shopping with them for 7 years and lets say they have helped more than my families digestive track

I take Align for my own issues but my 7 yr old son was recently having some issues and I bought him Culterelle for Kids. It is a probiotic and they are in convenient drink packets (like Crystal light on the go packets). They are flavorless so you can add them to any cold drink (not hot). I found them at Walgreens but be forewarned, they are not cheap. $26.99 for 30 packets.

My daughter is 5 and has had BM problems since birth. She gets a rash from yogurt too, I don't know if she has allergies to antibiotics since she has never had to take them. I give her probiotics everyday we use Culturelle for kids. They are small packets that I add to her juice. We also see a chiropractor at least once a month. Some of the better probiotics are sold in the all natural health food stores and should be kept in the fridge.

I also have had BM challenges & have tried numerous products and I could not see myself taking pills or powder all the time, I wanted something as natural as I could get, I have done a lot research as far as what works for my body and I find that making the below mentioned smoothie with more greens than fruit has been awsome for me, it works like a charm quickly.

I am not a vegan or a natural health, no drugs type person but I have had to make a lot of changes concerning my health and not having a BM often was creating a few problems so I am finding out that organic foods are beneficial.

I spoke with a nutritionist who recommended the below drink as a probiotic. I have allowed my girls to drink it when I purchase it for myself.

Hey Guys,
So I got tons of requests for the recipe I made this morning on The Today Show. Here it goes!
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups water
1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped
3-4 stalks organic celery
1/2 head of a large bunch or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach
1 organic apple, cored and chopped
1 organic pear, cored and chopped
1 organic banana
Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon
optional:
1/3 bunch organic cilantro (stems okay)
1/3 bunch organic parsley (stems okay)

Directions:
Add the water and chopped head of romaine to the blender. Starting the blender at low speed, mix until smoothi. Gradually moving to higher speeds, add the celery, apple and pear. Add the cilantro and parsley, if you are choosing to add them. Add the banana and lemon juice last.• Try to drink at least 16-24 ounces a day, if not more! Stir before you drink!

• I encourage you to mix and match your greens and fruits, as greens and fruits food combine well together (except for melons). Be sure to balance the light and darker greens, so for instance, if you want to add some kale, be sure to balance with the lighter green of celery. Bill the anchor today, mentioned he didn’t like cilantro. No problem! Just leave it out and use another green instead, or up the quantities of the other greens.
• * If you are diabetic and prefer to cut out all high glycemic fruit, you can omit the banana. Otherwise, I suggest keeping it in, as it adds a nice consistency and taste.

I-Flora for Kids. It's what the DAN! doctors use. Get it online. ALso take her off ALL DAIRY products and soy. She can't digest the huge proteins in it.

They sell a lot of probiotic powders at places like Whole Foods and some are made for kids. My doctor recommended one (can't remember which) for my son when he was a baby and we stopped using it as he got older. I can't remember the name of it. But it was over the counter and like $12 for a tub, giving him only 1/4 tsp a day it lasted forever. It tasted sweet and he always had no problem eating it.

You could call homeopathic-friendly pharmacies like the Medicine Shoppe, or call your pediatrician and ask them for a homeopathic recommendation -- or maybe if they don't know they can recommend a colleague who specializes in holistic medicine. The selection at our Whole Foods is overwhelming!
