I got a pressure cooker 3 1/2 years ago for our wedding. I was really excited about it and wanted to use it right away- then I read the instructions and the warnings about how it can explode if improperly used. Then I got scared of this contraption!! Well, now I’m ready to conquer my fear and want to know some recipes- with details as to pressure to use (mine has 2- 10 and 15) and how to AVOID the explosion! Thanks for all the advice in advanced! ~J.

So What Happened?

Well, I finally used it to make pinto beans. My MIL had given me the recipe and instructions. They came out a little mushy, but the pot and my house are still in tact! I think I may try a roast of some kind in the next couple of weeks. Thanks gals! ~J.

No worries about blow ups! For the most part, this is one of those "cover your behind" warnings intended for those with no common sense. Modern-day cookers have safety measures in place to drastically reduce such accidents. Regardless, just be sure to read the instruction booklet regarding how to release pressure safely so that you don't (a) steam burn yourself, which actually can be a more common injury and (b) just generally avoid block-head maneuvers (like blowing out foam, etc.).

As for recipes, you can basically convert any of your favorite recipes for the pressure cooker (some are obviously more suited than others). Check out http://www.missvickie.com/, which I found really helpful for me (no worries on her looking down on an electric cooker - I think she's just die-hard old school). Or, if your manual includes a couple of recipes, you can pretty much use those as guides on cooking times/settings for standard recipes that are simliar.

Good luck and good eatings.

J.,

My mother used a pressure cooker a lot while we were growing up and never had a mishap. Mainly I remember her cooking mashed potatoes. My brother used one to cook artichokes in 45 minutes.

Just a quick heads-up....I grew up w/my mom using one, and I use mine about 3-4 times a year and have never had a problem with it!! It's really nice when time is tight and you need to cook something quickly, like a pot roast or beans!

The pressure cooker that I use only has numbers that refer to the cooking time needed for the different type of foods. The only meal that I cook in mine is Beef Stew. Pressure cookers are much safer than they used to be. Just make sure that nobody lifts the pressure regulator off while it is cooking.
