So What Happened?

Well after getting the shot in February, and not going for the follow up, I wanted to know how long it would take to get pregnant again. I am happy to say I am now 8 weeks pregnant, got pregnant in November, which took 6 months! And we didn't do anything special, good ol' fashion way. I must admit that my doctor said that was quick. But for everyone in my position I encourage you to keep trying, it WILL happen on God's timing! Thank you all for your advice.

Look on the Depo Vera web site (or start with the makers web site). It has a ton of information regarding the lasting effects of the shot, and what you can do to increase you chances of pregnancy. Good luck.

Dear F.,

I must be "out of the loop". I'm 42, and have a 20 year old, an 18, soon to be 19 year old, and a 17 year old. I had all of my children in the 80's, so I'm not familiar with the DEPO shot. However, I have a sister in law who is having trouble getting pregnant--- Does this have anything to do with infertitlity. Just asking.

Hi F., I'm S. and I am a depo shot user. I took the depo shot after my first born and when we desided to have another, it took about 9 months from the last shot and as it turn out, the shot happened to stop working in January of 2002. I became pregnant in January and gave birth to a health boy On October the 6th. Good Luck!

I wish you the best of luck...I don't if it is because the shot was new when I was on it or what but I had a terrible time and miscarried before I got pregnant4 years after trying (I took a total of 5 shots...got off of it in hopes of being pregnant when my son was 3 and instead he was 5 before we finally conceived) That has been 11 years ago, but I had a terrible time on the shot-weight gain...moody etct...

Stick in there-the one month we didn't try (March didn't want a Christmas baby) we got pregnant (12/12 birthday haha). I got the Mirena IUD after my last baby and am loving it(just a suggestion for after a new baby)

Good luck- my ob suggested that we refrain from any type of sexual release for hubby except for the one week I was ovulating...just an idea.

it took me a year
I came off it in september.
My periods had not come back to normal by May so I saw my ob\gyn & she got my periods back on line within a couple of months. A month later i was pregnant.
I guess it all depends when your body gets back to ovulating

F.,
The same thing happened to me. I had my first son and then got on the depo shot. When he was 12 months we wanted to start trying for a second baby. My OBGYN told me it could take up to a year or longer to get pregnant after the shot. So I asked to be given something to speed up the process. He put me on clomid,,a very mild fertility drug. We got pregnant the first month. Good Luck!! J.

It kind of depends on your age and natural fertility, I went 2 months with out the shot after being on it for over a year and got pregnant. but they say it can take up to 16 months

Hi F.--I am Kathy V, a Certified Nurse Midwife. Today, I saw a client 21 weeks pregnant. She was due her Depo on Mar3, started a period Mar 8, and according to our estimates, conceived around Mar 28!!

Now, your response to Depo is as individual as you are. Most women desiring pregnancy after Depo, are pregnant within 6-9 months. If you have a period, plan on ovulation in 2 weeks, depending on your regular cycle intervals. If you were irregular (1 - 3 months or more), you may go back to that irregularity. Or, you may be pregnant as we speak!

You can find me on mamasource kathy v, or call my office ###-###-####.

6-12 months is average if you haven't been on it long, the longer you have been on it, the more time it will take for your hormones to balance themselves to support a pregnancy. you could ask about clomid, or you could wait it out. If you aren't preggo by november I would look into getting somehelp.

I got pregnant a year and three months after my shot, but I had issues with the shot. It says it causes irregular bleeding which for most means not much of a period. Well, I bleed for 6 months STRAIGHT!!!! I only had the one shot, too. Good luck with it, though!!

From what I know, it takes about 3 months for the shot to wear off and for you to be able to get pregnant. But, I've heard of people getting pregnant right away too. I guess it just depends on what is meant to be. Good luck!

Hi, this was my mistake with getting pregnant. I was on the Depo shot for 6 mos., and got pregnant about 6 mos. after I missed my next shot. Whatever you do, DO NOT try to get pregnant. I ended up miscarrying at two mos, and it's the most severe pain you will ever go thru. The doc said we lost the baby due to the depo shot. Use condoms for protection for atleast 8-9 mos. after geting off the shot. The depo shot is THE worst thing for you when you're trying to get pregnant, even after you get off of it. Please be careful. I am not trying to scare you, just telling you what I went thru so you won't have to experience what my husband and I did. After we lost the first baby, mu obgyn wanted me to wait 3 mos. atleast to get pregnant. Well, we waited two weeks and now have a healthy baby due in January! :) Good luck and pray. It really does make a difference.
