Hi Ladies,

I recently found out that I am 7 weeks pregnant. The big surprise is I had a tubal ligation almost 3 years ago. While I am completely excited to be having number 3, I am totally un-prepared for this!! Not just mentally, but we just got rid of all of our baby things. Like I said we are both VERY excited....I just want to know if there are any other people this has happened to.

What can I do next?

This is actually more common than you think...especially if you were fairly young when you had the procedure. Your body is actually capable of 'regenerating' your tubes, so be careful. The only sure way of prevention aside from abstinence is to have a complete hysterectomy. Congratulations!

You and the responses below are freaking me out - I had a tubal 3 years ago!! My youngest is almost 10 - I can't guarantee I'd be as excited as you if I was in your position. You are a special person! :) Hopefully I was old enough when I had my procedure (38) that they were starting to shrivel up on their own anyway!! :)

I had a daughter in 7/01 and had a tubal ligation at the same time (had a c-section). 13 months later, I was pregnant again. Whoops! I had another daughter in 4/03 AND another tubal ligation (and another c-section). After that baby and tubal, my husband suddenly decided he wanted more kids and pushed me to get a reversal done. Ah, no thanks! Not that I dont LOVE my kids, I do, I just have high risk pregnancies and did not want to be pregnant again.
Congrats on your new baby. It is truly a blessing from above. :)

I have a friend who had 3 children from her previous marriage and 2 step children and 1 child that belonged to her and her husband. She had a tubal ligation after the child they had together and in less than a year she found she was pregnant again. They now have total of 7 kids. She sent him to get fixed.

I had another friend that had a tubal ligation about 12 years ago and found she was pregnant. It turned out to be a ectopic pregnancy and had to be removed. The egg had somehow found a small hole where her clamps came undone and got stuck there and fertilized.

It happens. My doctor told me there was a 1 in 500 chance of pregnancy with a tubal ligation.

One of my tubes was complete removed due to a ovarian cyst that grew to it and the other was clipped tied and burned. I tried to get a straight answer out of my doctor as to whether or not the completely removed tube was sealed where it opened into my uterus but never could get a straight answer. I have wondered it will happen to me!

It better not happen to me lol! I had the tubal ligation where the ends are burned. I hope they don't grow back. I had two hydro-thermal ablation surgeries and would not be able to carry a baby anyway. We decided two was enough for us.

My aunt had three c-sections, a tubal following the last one. 10 years later, along came my cousin, Ruth:). Yes, it's happened before!

Congratulations!!!

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy!

This hasn't happened to me, but I do have a fear that it will! I just had my tubal done in July, and already have 4 children (12, 19mo. twins, 2mo.). I am hearing about it happening more and more lately, and am wondering if it is because they do the procedure differently now than they did 10-15yrs. ago. Either way, the thought scares me to tears! lol

Again, congratulations to you and your husband! Everything happens for a reason!

There is a lady on my play group board that had her 6th child. She had her tubes tied, cut and burned 2 years ago I believe. Talk about a surprise! This time she had her tubes completely removed. But even that procedure has a failure rate. It is an extremely small chance but it can and does happen. It is not unheard of for a woman to get her tubes tied and a man get his snipped and end up with another baby anyway. Short of abstinance or removing the uterus I don't think there is any 100% effective birth control.

I think it depends on the type of procedure you have that determines the failure rate. The ones where they just clamp them closed have a higher failure rate than the ones where they actually remove a section of the tube then burn them closed.

I've known people who had babies 6 years after a tubal AND 5 years after a vasectomy so both do fail.

All I can say is ... good luck and this better NOT happen to me LOL

I've posted this a lot on this site, but I know personally of two different stories (family friends) who got pregnant years after a tubal! My own doctor told me to get my husband to have a vasectomy, because even though once in a blue moon those grow back, it's much rarer than a tubal growing back. She said tubals are much more prone to "fail" than vasectomies! Good luck!

wow...interesting responses! I had a tubal a year ago with my c-section because of my age and high risk pregnancies. Thinking tubal's not enough and going without for quite awhile!! LOL

a similar problem happened to my mom, except it was my dad who'd had a vasectomy and then 10 years later a surprise baby. Thank goodness for garage sales and free cycle! :-)
