Hello mamas,
I'm about 10 weeks pregnant with my second child. It is a wonderful blessing to be pregnant again; however, my body is a total wreck! I have horrible morning sickness from the afternoons until bedtime. Luckily, the nausea and throwing up don't occur during my workday. I work a semi-stressful job as an elementary school teacher. When I get home with my almost 3-year old son, I feel so winded and sick all the time. I used to play and do fun activities with him, but lately, I need to lay down while he plays. I've explained to him that mommy's growing a new baby so she's very tired. I feel so bad that I'm not spending enough quality time playing with my boy. My hubby is very supportive and definitely helps out when he gets home, which has been great. I also feel bad that I have zero sex drive and I'm so uncomfortable physically. Like thanks for helping me make the baby- no sex for you for a while!
My doctors say everything is normal, that my body is doing what it needs to do. I did have the sickness with my first child, but it was never this bad. I'm normally pretty active, but I don't even have the energy to exercise anymore, like I'd much rather take a nap than pop in the many prenatal yoga videos I have or hit the gym. So I've tried the sea bands for the nausea, ginger foods, seltzer water, cutting out caffeine, drinking lots of herbal teas, and eating smaller meals more frequently- everything seems like a temporary fix but the effects don't last. Sleep is pretty much the only thing that makes me feel better til the morning. Also, my poochy belly is showing more and more. I look like I'm already in the 2nd trimester! It's getting harder and harder to wear my existing clothes. Guess I should bust out my maternity clothes now. I haven't told anyone at work yet except for a few friends and I don't plan to for a few more weeks until I'm clearly out of the 1st trimester (I had one miscarriage a few years back so I'm super cautious). Sorry, I guess I don't have a specific question, just needed to vent and seek any advice. I do have hope that I will not feel this awful and I know that with each trimester comes all new symptoms.

What can I do next?

S.,
I am so sorry that you are going through this. Remember, the best thing you can do for your family is to take care of yourself. Your son will be fine and sounds like he is getting some really great bonding time with daddy. I am so happy for you that you have a supportive husband.

I personally have never had morning sickness in any of my pregnancies, but my g/f has in all three of her pregnancies and she swears by this. She would take Emetrol. It is an over the counter med. She spoke to both her Dr. and the pharmacist and they both gave her the approval to take it. She took it for all three of her pregnancies and her children are now 21, 18, and 12. It is worth it to look into it.

I hope this helps and I hope you start feeling better soon.

Hi S.,
I am also 10 weeks along with my second and I have an almost-3-year-old son and I have terrible morning, noon and night sickness. Up until recently I was throwing up repeatedly everyday. I have been taking a combination of vitamin B6 (I take 50 mg) with half of a Unisom (doxylamine) tablet. I do this once at bedtime and again when I put my son down for a nap in the afternoon. It makes me sleepy, but I haven't thrown up in 2 days, and it seems to ease the feelings of nausea as well. I have been able to eat, shower, clean up the house, take my son to the park, all things I couldn't do just a few days ago.
I have also found that sucking on lemon candies can help a bit, if the nausea is mild, so I do that at work.
As far as clothes, do you have a belly band? It is a thick band of elastic that can be worn over your regular pants while pregnant/postpartum. It holds your pants up and smooths things out so you can just leave them unbuttoned and/or unzipped. I used one in my first pregnancy and loved it and will likely be using it again soon this time.
I hope that you start to feel better soon, I know how hard feeling this way can be, and then we end up feeling guilty on top of it all. Try not to worry about all the things you feel you should be doing but aren't able to. Just do the best you can and take care of yourself and your new little baby. This too shall pass and you will be back to being the awesome mom and wife that you were before.

I was nuseaus my entire first trimester. Even eating bread was only a temporary fix so my doctor prescribed Reglan. I will say it worked but it knocked me on my butt and I was so tired I had to sleep. I only took it a few times but it helped. You could ask your doctor for something like that.
Things got better after my first trimester.
Good luck and congratulations!

hang in there! dont stress and take it easy. try peppermint candies for your morning sickness. i must have gone thru 3 bags of those things. they really helped with my sick stomach. just the plain ones like you get after dinner...no chocolate or anything. also get one of those belly band things you wear over your regular pants, but allows you to leave them unzipped and unbuttoned. they are like tube tops for your pants and come in all diff colors. i bought only 3 pairs of mat pants...i wore all my regular pants/jeans all the way up till i delivered and it will help after the baby comes with giving you some abdominal support.

Shalom S.! I am writing from Jerusalem. The following is taken from an article that I wrote called "Reiki for Birthing Mothers".

"Once, a woman, I will call her Yael, who was four months pregnant joined a morning Reiki course. She was late for class, because she had been so nauseous that morning that she could not leave her home on time. When Yael arrived, we all noticed that she actually looked green! I invited her to sit in front of me, and put my hands on her shoulders as I introduced the class to Reiki and to each other. I could not see her face. Suddenly, I noticed amazed expressions in the faces of the students who were facing me. They all exclaimed “But she turned PINK! She is not green any more!” Yael turned around to me with a huge smile on her face. She said that that was the first time in months that she was not nauseous. With her continued Reiki practice, the nausea did not return for the rest of the pregnancy."

Thus, I do not agree with your doctor (a man?): I suggest that it is NOT normal to suffer from nausea during pregnancy (many women do not, I did not when I was pregnant, even without Reiki). You suffer from nausea when you and your body are worn out.

Reiki, if done right, will help you. I might be able to help you to find a Reiki Master (or at least a Reiki practitioner) in the Bay Area. I expect to be teaching in SF and Oakland in January. If you want to consult with me, write to me at reikiforpeace at g mail . com

I will be glad to help you.

looking forward!

R.

Sounds like your pregnancy is going like mine did. I am also pregnant with my second, but I am almost 6 months along.

Like you, the first trimester of my first pregnancy was uncomfortable - nausea, tiredness - but very manageable; this time, I have had days exactly like you describe. With my energy level way down, when I had time to spend with my daughter, I had to lie down and just let her play around me. There was about a two week period when, from the moment I opened my eyes in the morning to the moment I forced myself to shut off and go to sleep at night, my nausea was so strong I had to really focus on not vomiting. I had to force myself to eat because I knew I should, but nothing tasted good. There were periods of time when I had to sit very still because any movement made me feel like I would be sick. The thought of possibly feeling like that until delivery would make me want to cry.

The more dramatic body changes I can relate to also. I've been wearing maternity clothes since about the second month. My doctor reassures me that it's just because everything is already stretched out, and it's normal to feel extra "flabby" (that's her word!) in subsequent pregnancies.

The good news is that right at the end of my first trimester, it was like a fog was lifting. I was so focused on making it through each day, I didn't even realize how badly I was feeling until I started to feel better. To say that it was a relief doesn't come close to describing how I felt! Now, although I'm still more easily tired and feeling humongous, I feel SO much better.

I know it's tough to dread every day, but hang in there...you only have a few more weeks until you should start to feel much, much better!

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy!!! I'm sorry you've been feeling so sick and that you're tired... unfortunately that's just part of being pregnant. Each pregnancy is different. I am pregnant with my third and I was showing at 9 weeks. I'm currently 12 weeks pregnant and I look like I'm 5 months!! My grandpa swears I'm carrying twins, but I've had 2 ultrasounds and there is just one baby in there ;) hehe. Anyways, the nausea and exhaustion will pass.... in the mean time, let daddy take care of things and bond with your son. Maybe you can lay down and read a story to your son or if he's tired, maybe he can lay down with you. I have a 2 and a half year old, so I know how you feel. It won't last forever though, usually you feel better by the 2nd trimester. Good luck.

First off, I think you're having a girl!!! Secondly, morning sickness is a drop in blood sugar, I did research when I was pregnant and this is the best I found - Take your prenantal vitamins at 3:00 pm, talk to your OB about switching your prenatal to one that is better for morning sickness (ask her if she knows which one is a blue pill, that's the one, it's by prescription only). Next, eat something every hour or 2. Some women say pasta is stomachable but eat whatever you can. The winners in my research were "Milk and cereal bars" like honey nut cheerios and cinnamon toast crunch, with the milk icing in the middle. Fruity Mentos, orange juice. I always kept hard candy and suckers in my purse and car and work and ate them all the time. Maybe even try popsicles.
Being tired is pretty normal in the beginning, don't feel bad about your time with your son, it will pass very soon. Lay down and watch a movie together, or even play doctor or "kitchen" have him make you pretend food and bring it to you, or try to take your vitals and stuff while you lie down. Hopefully you only have 2 or 3 weeks left of feely crappy! Call your friends and family and tell them you need help watching your son once in a while (or if you aren't telling them your pregnant yet, tell them you need to get some work done, attend a meeting or something and just go home and sleep, even have your husband pick him up so you don't have to wake up to get him!!) or if you can afford it, hire a babysitter for a couple hours! Good luck, it will go away soon!!!

Everyone and every baby you have is so different, but I feel for you! My 1st kid I was competing in dance competitions that required many hours of intense practice until 9 months pregnant and was doing yoga and walking everyday with minimal sleep problems and no sickness.

My 2nd kid kept me nauseous anytime I would stand or sit for more than 5 minutes at a time for the 1st trimester....so I caught up on a lot of TV laying on my stomach. Finally that subsided and got to the gym for exercise again, but I became so HUGE from baby #2 that I could barely walk.

Then I see ladies in the gym working out frantically till the day before their due date with no problems or sickness....I must admit I was a bit jealous as they seem to recover faster (especially after a c-section). But I have to remember that each person has to have their own journey and it's not always a pleasant one, even if the end result is an amazing miracle of life.

Just know you are NOT the only one and it will be over before you know it.

.... amongst the things you mentioned... I had BAD morning sickness and migraines with BOTH my pregnancies for months and all day for months... the ONLY thing that helped me and was recommended by my OB/GYN, was Acupuncture.
Just one, half hour session, was all it took.. to rid me off all that.
It does not hurt and is actually very relaxing.

Of course, use an Acupunturist that handles pregnant women.

good luck,
Susan
