Seeking Information on How Long "Morning Sickness" Lasts

I just finished my 13'th week and am officially out of my first trimester. However, I am still feeling nausea and dizziness. I was in the hospital last week b/c of dehydration and am much better now. I'm just not feeling good enough....Is there hope? Or, do women deal with this all the time and silently suffer? This is my second pregnancy my first was a miscariage and we were hoping to have 3 or 4 kids (God willing) I was just wondering if anyone can tell me when this will end or if it will end?

What can I do next?

Lots of answers! Just wanted to say not to hold off on having more kids if you do have the morning sickness the whole time. Each pregnancy is different. Good luck!! Hang in there!!

With my second child, I had nausea until my 5th month. When I went to the OB for that visit, he told me I was just now at the weight I was when I first came in at the beginning of my pregnancy. I could not eat hardly anything and milk was the worst! After that time though, I did just fine. I have heard of women that felt horrible through their whole pregnancy. Hope you feel better and get to enjoy being pregnant,

I had "morning" sickness every NIGHT until about my 22nd week. Everyone told me it would go away after 12 weeks - ha. Hang in there. My Dr. gave me an Rx for Zofran & I took it on days when I could not just go home from work, throw up & go to sleep at 6 PM! It helped me function when I had to. Also, eat popsicles!

L.,
I was counting down the days to the end of my first trimester, hoping I would stop feeling so awful all the time.. Im now 19 weeks, and still sick. I've lost 20 lbs so far and only gained one. (The dr.s aren't concerned b/c I'm overweight anyway and say that the baby gets everything it needs before I do) I know that we hate to hear this sort of thing because it crushes our hopes, but just know you aren't alone. I feel awful b/c I'm still not even excited (what a horrible mom I already must be!) and we find out what we're having next Thursday. Hang in there, I hope that you'll be lucky and it will stop soon!! They say it's worth it..(This is my first.)

Everyone's pregnancy is different and even the same woman can have different reactions to different pregnancies. As much as we'd like to think there is a hard and fast pattern to it all, there's not. Some women are more prone to morning sickness, some aren't. Women in my family (me, mother, maternal grandmother) are not prone to morning sickness. We had very little nausea at all throughout. Others have it for a few weeks or few months, others have it all the way through.

I would recommend examing your diet. Be careful to keep your blood sugar level. THe times I got nauseated was usually due to not eating properly (too much sugary starchy foods) or not eating at all. But then I was an easy case. I know women who couldn't stand the site of food for half of their pregnancy.

I wish I could tell you that it's going to end like magic exactly on a certain day, but no one can make that call. Talk to your doctor about over the counter treatments (like Preggy-pops) or something more holistic or herbal. If it's really bad there are meds they can prescribe, but I personally tried to steer clear of all meds while pregnant. And do what you can to stay hydrated in the meantime (very important for you and baby).

Hang in there! You may wake up tomorrow and it will be gone. I hope for your sake it does end quickly because being pregnant can be such a wonderful experience.

I thought I would share with you something that i read and give you a little advice. I learned to eat little meals otr snsacks all through out the day and if i did not have enough in my tummy i felt sick. I read when I was pregnant that morning sickness is a good sign that the baby is growing and developing well so that made me feel better knowing that the yucky feeling meant that my body was responding the way it was suppose to, to the miracle inside of me. best of luck!!!!

Hi L.,

I had nausea for about the first 3 months. It went away. Then came back during the last month. For me, it was the smell of beef or pork cooking that gave me nausea. I don't know why though since I'm by far not a vegetarian. But for some reason, in particular, if I smelled beef or pork, it made me gag. So I just tried my best to avoid those incidents. Needless to say, I ate a lot of chicken during my pregnancy.

Have you noticed anything in particular that causes nausea for you? Maybe it's something that you loved during your pre-pregnancy days that you didn't realize is causing nausea now. Try to keep a record of your nausea and things you've eaten or smell when you experience it to see if there's some connection.

The reason why it probably came back during the last month for me was because it was the holiday season and I was visiting family and friends and they were cooking all sorts of things. Sometimes you just can't avoid it. Bring some crackers! Have a safe and healthy pregnancy!

My first was fine. This one (I am due in 6 weeks) has been a pain in the everywhere! I am still nauseous all the time. But ginger helps... ginger snaps, ginger tea, etc. It is an Asian home remedy that has been proven to work. I couldn't stomach saltines as recommended, so I found a cereal that I liked and munched on that a lot. Fruit also seemed to help, especially sour fruit (sour kiwi, lemon or lime sprinkled watermelon, etc).
As others said, it may or may not get better. But the end result is awesome!

While I did not suffer from morning sickness, both my best friend and sister did. In fact, they were sick from the moment of conception clear until the day they delivered! I also know a woman who gets pregnant very easily but also misacarries very easily. The way she can tell if she will carry the baby full term is if she has morning sickness. When she barfs she is thankful! LOL!
I do not know from personal experience, just from holding back my friends' hair.... it is awful. I suggest stocking up on ginger ale and saltines. Good luck and I hope you get over it soon!

I hate to break it to you, but you could feel some state of nausea throughout your whole pregnancy. Or you could be relieved of it at any point. There's just no way of knowing because every pregnancy is different. Just try to stay hydrated and nibble on snacks you know you can handle off and on all day long. Get plenty of rest too. If it gets really bad, talk to your dr. I think there may be a safe prescription for severe nausea. Good luck!

With my two pregnancies it ended at about 12 weeks, however my cousin's morning sickness did not. Her dr gave her dramamine that she took as needed throughout the rest of her pregnancy. I am not sure what other medications are compatable with pregnancy, but Zofran and Phenergan are commonly used for nausea. Ginger is also supposed to help. Good luck!

With my third pregnancy (second live birth) I suffered for almost 6 months with morning sickness and like you was hospitalized. I'm sure you've tried the B6 and Unisom combination, ginger (I like the Ginger Chews available in the checkout lines at Target and in the Whole Foods stores aisles), or even prescription meds to help. Make sure you're getting enough protein in your diet. It does go away. I'm 21 weeks now with our 4th pregnancy and felt awful for the first 14-15 weeks. To help me feel better I had to eat something small every 30-60 minutes. Each pregnancy has been very different (just found out yesterday that we're having our 1st girl!) Make it through this pregnancy and your next ones could be very different. :) You're in my prayers.

Unfortunately - morning sickness or even all day sickness can last throughout pregnancy. I was sick with my first child until month 5 - then had a short reprieve before it all started again by month 7. However, there is help. I tried many home remedies, I even bought a "motion sickness" watch to wear (which actually gave a little relief) and then dicussed other options with my doctor. With all of my children, I ended up taking Zofran - a medication given to chemo patients to help with nausea. I know many mothers are hesitant about using nausea medication, but I had no choice if I wanted to keep myself and my baby healthy during pregnancy. You could discuss the option with your OB. She or he may have some more answers for you as well.

Dear L.,
I'm not going to be a lot of help for you, except to suggest you try red raspberry leaf tea with a little honey for sweetness. It helps some with me. I was sick from the morning after (literally) until the birth, with 5 of my 6 children. Also, drinking the tea the last couple of weeks like it was going out of style, I had a 10 lb 4 1/2 oz baby boy with no stitches, and mostly a pain-free labor. The tea helps you stretch without tearing; it also contains calcium, which is a natural pain reliever. As soon as I knew I was in labor, I ate everything I could think of that had calcium in it, and went into the hospital 3 hours before he was born with only the feeling of the muscles contracting, no pain. As soon as they put the iv in (now they just use a port that they can get to the vein in case you need something right away), the fluid they pushed into me counteracted the calcuim, but it was toward the end of labor. Natural herbs and calcium is a lot healthier for you and the baby. Good luck. Enjoy your little one! Jan in MO

Hi L.,
Congratulations on your pregnancy! With my 3rd pregnancy, second child, I was extremely nauseous for about 16 weeks. I actually had to take Zofran it was so bad as I had a 6 month old when I became pregnant. Although most of the nauseousness subsided at that time I was sick for about 25 weeks. Just for hope for future pregnancies I was not nauseous at all with my first pregnancy. Again, congratulations and best to you!

Hi L.. I just want to tell you how sorry I am that you are feeling bad and going through this. Some women just breeze through pregnancy without a hitch and say it's the best they've ever felt and then there are women, like myself, who were miserably sick the entire time. I felt like I had the stomach flu the ENTIRE pregnancy. But, the great news for me was that both deliveries were a total BREEZE. So, I guess it can go either way. No one knows when you will feel better but hopefully it will be soon! Just eat small healthy meals and keep your fluid intake good. I found that vitamin b12 helped me as did eating saltines and bananas. Good Luck and may you have a healthy pregnancy and delivery! God Bless!

Most doctors will tell you that it ends around the 14th-16th week. However, mine ended more around the 18th week. I literally went from being extremely sick to feeling amazingly great the next day. And enjoy that time when you do begin to feel better. I started to not feel so good again after i finally got over the morning sickness (began experiencing many of the typical pregnancy symptoms-heartburn, extremely swollen feet, etc.) but then every women is different. but hope you are able to get some relief. best of luck with everything :)

Great advice here. Didn't have time to read it all, but wanted to say I agree with the pop cycles and the preggy pops. The preggy pops are expensive though, so I went with jolly ranchers and it provided the same ease for the nausea. I think any hard candy would work. I kept a bag at work and a snack bag in my purse. My morning sickness ended soon after the first trimester (maybe a couple of weeks into the 2nd trimester). Hang in there and congrats on your pregnancy!

The good news is that they say morning sickness is a sign of a healthy placenta...The bad news is it's all up to your body as to when it all stops. For me, it was about 16 weeks - hang in there, you're almost done! - I had a boy. They say that it lasts longer with girls; a friend of mine went till about 20 weeks with her girl. They also say it's worst the first time. Something that helped me get through 24/7 nausea with no vomiting was carrying around a ginger root - seriously, or cuddling up to one while I slept. The scent helps ease the queasiness. Good luck and congratulations! :)

Sadly, the idea that morning sickness magically shuts off after the first trimester is a myth. Though many women start to feel relief around this time, there are many of us who suffer much longer. I was sick for the first 5 months of my pregnancy and then the last 2 months. I had just a couple of good months in there. I still did it twice and would do it again, so the only encouragement I can give you is that it is worth it.

You take it in slow enough that it stays down and it also hydrates you. Also make sure you have saltine crackers by your bed and eat a couple before you even think of getting out of bed in the morning. It should be ending soon. God Bless and take care! Barb K.

Hi, L.! You're definitely not alone, as you can tell by the many responses here.

IME, every pregnancy is a little different (even for the same woman), so this pregnancy may be nothing like future ones. I'm 21 weeks along on my fourth pregnancy, and my nausea this time around just ended last week! It's been different each time. :-)

And as many of us know, "morning" sickness is definitely a misnomer, lol... it can hit at any time of day--or night! You might try taking your prenatal vitamin before bed or with a meal if morning isn't working, but don't fret if you simply can't stomach them at all right now--the baby will still get what he/she needs, and if the vitamins don't stay down, they aren't any help, anyway.

Some of the things that may help: protein before bed (try cheese cubes, nuts, tofu, or eggs, if you can't stomach meats); carbs (such as saltines or graham crackers), especially before getting out of bed; sipping sour lemonade or adding a little fresh-squeezed lemon to food; nibbling gingersnaps (fresh or candied ginger seems to work better than ground); smaller meals or snacks spread throughout the day to help keep blood sugar levels from dropping; sipping "Mama Calm" or red raspberry leaf tea (get doctor's approval first!); or popsicles (real fruit ones are especially good, but whatever works). Experiment a little about what types of food seem to appeal to you and stay down best--salty, sour, sweet, bitter, a combination? Keep in mind that at this point, hydration and just keeping *something* down is good--so don't be too h*** o* yourself if, like me, all you can keep down during those really bad days are corn chips and lemonade! ;-)

If none of these "natural" ideas work, then your doctor might be able to give you a prescription for something to help with the nausea. The one my doctor gave me (Promethazine) caused me to get very drowsy, though, so I only took it when I was *really* feeling awful and had time to sleep!

Congrats on your pregnancy, and I really hope your morning sickness ends soon!

I can empathize with you L.. I had morning sickness, especially with my first pregnancy. For me, I found that at about week 14, it just disappeared!! Hopefully, that will be the case with you, as well. With my second pregnancy, I had the "morning sickness" sypmtoms at the end, especially the last few days before my son was born.

I tried "Preggie Pops" hard candy, from Motherhood Maternity store and they seemed to help some. At least I thought so, anyway!!

For some, I have heard that "morning sickness" lasts throughout pregnancy, but if you are like most, you will be feeling GREAT before long. And, if symptoms presist and are severe, you can request medication to treat it from your doctor.

My doctor kept telling me that it would go away by the end of the second trimester (which still is terribly long if you're going through it) but I actually ended up having morning sickness until I was about 33 or 34 weeks, which, by the way is probably not normal and will likely not be the case for you. I can't make promises because I've heard of people who were sick for a lot longer, but around week 13 and 14, I started to notice little gaps where I would think, "Hey...I don't feel like @#$%" maybe for a few hours at a time (I had morning, noon and night sickness). Then one day around 14 weeks, I suddenly got REALLY hungry for spicy chili and made a whole pot, invited people over and had a football party! LOL
After that day, the sickness got less and less. I was in your same boat with the dizziness and dehydration fairly frequently, but that too improved probably around 16 weeks. Hang in there. There's a good chance you'll feel better soon, and the pregnancy gets to be a whole lot more fun!

There are several things that help- but sometimes nothing helps. I was sick from day one until delivery with all 3 of my kids. I threw up less with my 3rd than with my first- but I still threw up at least twice a day with my 3rd (more like 6-7 times a day with my 1st). I think it should be called pregnancy sickness- not morning sickness :) Some of the things that helped were:
ginger (I just took the pills)
bananas
toast
eat small meals instead of 3 bigger meals
wear motion sickness wristbands (Sea Bands-available at any pharmacy)
don't skip meals
herbal tea
If it's really bad, talk to your doc about Zofran. I never took it- but I have friends that swear by it! Good luck!!

I think every one of us is different and that means you will do as your body says to do. I had two children and with both of them I was sick fornine yes nine months. I figured out I was in labor with my second one when I stopped throwing up. OK that really is not fun for that kind of time but I had both kids so fast that it made up for the whole thing and after that I was not sick again! I know it is no fun but try soda crackers and lots of water. Your doctor may suggest something to relax your stomache too. That did help me and I slept when the urge was there-that helped too. Cat naps really got me through the days. Good luck and remember this will all be done soon and hopefully you have an easy delivery.

Dear L.,

I'm sorry that you are still feeling poorly. Many of the women with whom I am familiar with (my friends, colleagues, etc.) find that their symptoms resolve somewhere around 15-16 weeks. However, some women do have nausea and vomiting that lasts longer than that. There is a condition (hyperemesis) where women experience exaggerated nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, and this is something that you may want to discuss with your doctor, if your symptoms are affecting your ability to gain weight, or to stay hydrated. I had hyperemesis with all three of my pregnancies that resulted in live births, and there are treatments available to help with the symptoms (the excessive vomiting, excessive weight loss, etc.). Your physician is your best resource for these treatments and for information on this condition, as he/she knows your personal history and current situation.

I usually lost between 20-30 pounds those first few months of pregnancy, and then managed to gain some or all of it back during the last couple of months, for a net weight-gain of 9-10 pounds or more per pregnancy. On a good day, I would only vomit 5-10 times; on a bad day it was more like 10-20 times.

I hope that you feel better soon, and just remember - that nausea means that your hormones are doing their job!!! I'm so sorry that you had to go through the heartbreak of miscarriage, and I hope that you can relax and enjoy this pregnancy.

Oh - and some tips for helping with the nausea - eat frozen foods as the cold things will have less odor (popsicles, freeze apple or grape juice, freeze foods like grapes, canned pears, canned peaches, canned fruit cocktail, etc.). Drinking from a cup with a lid using a straw will also eliminate odors. Seabands (brand name) are little wrist bands that stimulate pressure points and are supposed to help with nausea. "Preggie Pops" are available in most drugstores these days (Albers at the Plaza location has them) or online; I don't think that particular brand is necessary, but a clear lollipop like that works for some women (it didn't for me - the best thing for me was to just avoid eating until after 5pm each day, a strategy that I don't recommend to others as it is not healthy for the baby or the mother).

I had hyperemisis as well, and it slowly diminished around 15 weeks for me. It is different with everyone. I had it much worse with my first pregnancy than I did with my current one, even though it was still bad. Just keep thinking that it cant last forever! Try ginger tea, crackers on your nightstand, ginger ale, and these didnt work for me, but many of my friends swear by them, belly pops.(sold at motherhood). Hope this helps, and I hope you start to feel better soon!!!

It usually does end. I had 7 pregnancies, 3 miscarriages. I was extra sick and for the whole time only once. I probably felt a little too good with a couple of the miscarriages.

Hang in there :) I know it feels like it's lasting forever. But you'll come away with a beautiful little bundle for your trouble :)
