Hi, I have a 27th month old daughter. I have been trying to potty train for a while using Pull UPs. My husbands cousin suggested that I use regular panties and take her every 30 min and let her sit for 10 min at a time. That worked out great yesterday. We had four hits and about 6 misses. Today, however, she wants to pee in her pants all day long and I don't know what to do. We are doing the same schedule as yesterday, and she did great then. Today she will sit for the 10 min and then gets up and pees right away in her pants. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Children do not understand what is really expected of them
when potty training is taking place until they are about 3
years old.

My mother insisted she had me potty trained at 9 months - I
told her she was the one trained !!!

I would suggest you put diapers back on her, do not mention
using the toilet, and in the spring when the weather is well past needing coats and heavy slacks, then pick up on the potty training again. Bet you it will work that time !!!

As much as you probably don't want to hear it, I think that children who are otherwise healthy and are in great condition mentally, physically, etc, will do it when they are ready. Some children are just not ready and 2 yrs old is young. Some kids can do it at one and some don't do it till they are 4. I tried w/ my daughter doing all that you mentioned and she would hit or miss too. I finally gave up and decided to let her tell me when she was ready but I did continue talking about it to her. I was constantly telling her of other kids her age that went like a big girl, etc About 2 months later she said, "ok, I am ready now" and she has been potty trained since. This was at 3 1/2.

Good luck

I agree with the posters who say wait until your child is ready. My son let us know when he was ready to potty train and it was quite obvious. Because we waited until he let us know, he essentially trained himself. Keep the potty out and always have that option for her but don't push it until she shows signs she is ready. Why create a headache you do not need. Many people seem to make it a competition that their child was trained by 2 or 18 months. Who cares! It does not mean they are better parents. Every kid is different. My son was 2 1/2 or so when he was potty trained but I have two friends with kids over 3 that are still in diapers. I have told each of them, every kid is different. Wait until he/she is ready before you take them out of diapers. When my son was your daughter's age he was really interested in wearing underwear so I thought he was ready to potty train. He had 3 accidents each day for 3 days so I put a diaper back on. A few months later he was clearly ready for the potty so we tried again and he was trained and started to wear underwear everyday all day. Accidents still happen and you will have to remind her to go potty for a long time but that goes with the territory.

There are very few things a child of that age can control in their life. This is one of them. Still pretty young at 27 months old. Relax Mom. It will come. Do not frustrate yoursel by worrying about it. The more pressure you put on her, the longer the process will take. (Mom of four, 10 grand kids and 2 great g-kids.) Good luck.

Hi S.,
I have an almost three year old girl who is still in diapers. With my first child I stressed about the potty issue and it made for a miserable/messy time for both she and I. My sister has 4 children and the best advice she gave me was to not worry about it and when she's ready it'll be easy. So I took her advice and ignored the stress I put on myself for not having her potty trained yet. When the day finally came she was totally ready. She asked to pee pee on the potty and to wear panties. She was about a week over three. I would still take her about every thirty minutes and she would go. I can count on one hand how few accidents she had. The first time I tried when she wasn't ready she had 4 accidents in an hour! So just know that every child is different and just because the "experts" say she should be trained by 2 doesn't mean she's behind if she isn't. My youngest will be 3 in march and has no desire to potty train..it's getting a little irritating having to change her diapers but I'd rather do that than clean up pee pee all day long! :) Good luck to you and your little princess! :)

If you honestly believe that she's ready for training- not you- but her- I would keep at it. Just as you've been doing. We offered our daughter m&m's and change to put in her piggy bank as a reward. She did not receive these things for "trying" but actually suceeding. Just another thought for you to try. Just remember, these thing don't happen over night. I can't even tell you the amount of clothes we changed during training. Good luck my daughter was the same age when we trained her.

27 months is really young. You could work really hard with any number of "techniques" out there, or you could wait a little until she is more ready and it will probably be a breeze.

It has only been a few days. I would keep putting panties on her and keep taking her to the potty. Don't get mad at her if she has an accident, but praise her for success. With both my kids it took several days after starting in underwear for them to gain control. I also would not make her sit for 10 minutes at a time. That is a long time for a 27 month old and might cause negetive feelings about the potty. Keep at it and good luck.

I would think she probably is not ready yet if she is still having that many accidents. She is still fairly young, and I say unless she all of the sudden makes amazing strides, let the subject of potty training go for a little while and try again when she is older (and maybe more ready). Good luck...I'm thrilled that we are past that point! :) Happy New Year!

She doesn't sound quite ready yet. Continue trying if you want to aggravate yourself. If I were you, I'd try again in 3 or 4 months.

your doing great. Just keep encouraging her. Try to stay away from pull only when sleeping or going out. But still take her to bathroom while out running your errands. So she do not have use the pull ups.

Do not stop she is almost there. Happy New Year!

I dont agree with those who say 27 months is really young my daughter was trained day and night at 28 months. But she was ready. You have to wait it out and wait till they are ready. Google the signs of being ready and see how many apply to her. My daughter had just a few of the signs like staying dry at night then she went to a friends house and he was training and wearing big boy underwear and the next day she decided to wear her big girl underwear and that was it she never peed her pants again. Ive heard it several times that when they are ready they will train in 1 day so if you have a friend who has an older child training maybe make a playdate. Good luck!!

My son did nothing below the waist at home. We set a timer for every 15 minutes and took him on the big potty. After the first week he could climb onto it by straddling it backwards. We gave him a m&m everytime and showed him what muscle he should squeeze. Their were a few accidents mostly after just getting off while washing his hands, but he picked up really quickly. He was daytime trained at 2 for the most part and completely during the day by 28 monts.

The younger they are the easier it is to make the concept stick. They are not vocal enough to protest or offer their opinion. Boys are supposed to be harder according to whoever and I didn't think so. Eventually we set the timer to 30 minutes, then 45, until he would tell us. At around 30 months we added pants/shorts and once he did okay getting everything up and down we added in underwear. He still has 8 months before preschool and we can work on school ready skills, not potty training.

Try doing a little rewards jar with either money or her favorite... whatever it may be. Let her know that if she does well, she gets the reward, but if she does not, no reward. Applaud every time, make a big deal. You may also do food coloring and every time she goes pee the color will change. Make it fun and games and you will see a differance I feel sure. But having just one child a it being a boy and having a bunch of nieces, girls are more stubborn, but usually easier. Good Luck.

To me, she is young. Try some m&m's in a jar on a shelf in the bathroom. She gets one for pp, 2 for poo. Potty her once an hr. Shadow her every move, and talk potty all day with her. What a big girl she is etc. Try this for 3 -7 days. Stay upbeat, never punish. Good luck.

This is what I did for my granddaughter. Find a Potty VHS or DVD and let her watch it . At her or his age they understand more than we realize. It won't train them over night but everytime I show it to her she improves. Also cheer her high fives etc. You don't have to give her teats all the time either. When she tells you praise her and when she misses I just say ugh o and say "you forgot,We'll remember the next time Okay" So it is working she is inproving daily.
