Potty Training - Tampa, FL - Mom with 1 kid

My daughter is 22 months old and is starting to show and interest in the potty. She wants to sit on the big toilet and sometimes she will let us hold her there and other times she wants to do it herself. She sits up there several times during the evening but she has actually only used it a few times. She goes to daycare during the day once she is two they will work with me on potty training.

My question is what do I do now. Should I let her continue to get on the potty when she asks or should I put her up there even when she doesn't ask and see if she is able to go and should I start trying her in panties yet? I do not want her stuck in pull ups forever so I wanted to try to transition right from diapers to panties except for when she is sleeping.

I do not want to push her too hard right now or discourage her so how do I keep her interested and continue to make progress and what is a proper reward for using the potty?

What can I do next?

I have gone through this once already and am working on my second round (2 year old boy). During Christmas I was looking for stocking stuffers and I wanted to get something that would help him with potty training since he was so ready! I picked up an egg timer (basically a 1 hour timer). I painted it and called it the "PeePee bell". Because I knew he needed to be on a set schedule and I had enough to do to keep my eyes on the clock, it sounded like a good idea (my husband laughed!). When we are home, I set the bell to go off in an hour - when he hears it, it is like a game and he goes running to the bathroom. He doesn't always go, but he tries. Now, we don't need the bell any more - he just has a mental clock that clicks almost every hour. He is still in pull ups, but can go almost all day without an accident. We play around with underwear, but haven't put them on all day yet - only up until nap time.

Try it - it worked for me.

B.,
I just potty trained my grandaughter in January, she turned two this past Easter Sunday. My daughter let my granddaughter come back with me when I went to visit them for Christmas in Colorado. My granddaughter was with me for 29 days in January. It was awesome. I decided to surprise mom and potty train Kelsie. I went to Walmart and bought her a singing potty chair. About January 11th I started potty training her. The first day of potty training she went pee 8 times in her potty chair and every time she tinkled in the potty chair, we would wipe and then stand up and start jumping up and down singing "Kelsie went potty in the toilet, Kelsie went potty in the toilet, who...hoo!" She loved it but the second day she didn' want to potty in the toilet so we took the day off. 3rd day she started potty training then and by the time her mommmy came to pick her up and take her home on the 29th of January, Kelsie was going out and about in her "my little pony underwear" My daughter was so thankful! It takes lots of time and patience. It takes some accidents on the floor and anywhere else but always reassure them that it is okay and she will keep wanting to go tinkle in the toilet. Kelsie's toilet had a lid that could be put on a big toilet plus the toilet also acts as a stepping stool to help her get on the big toilet. I let her choose which toilet she wanted to use so she would go back and forth from her potty chair to the "big potty seat" We took her potty chair around the house, if I was working in the kitchen we would put her potty chair in the kitchen, if I was working close to the bathroom than I would keep her potty chair in the bathroom. We always kept her potty chair close by. The other thing is to sacrifice for a few weeks and stay around the house as much as possible so that she has access to her potty whenever she needs it. Kelsie went # 2 in the potty chair on day 3. Kelsie is now fully potty trained. She has an accident once in awhile if she is playing at the park and is having to much fun but that is to be expected. Always carry an extra outfit just for incase. The most important part of potty training is lots and lots of patience and lots more of praise!! It is an experience that you will never forget! Have fun with it and she will respond! Don't forget to let her have a fun toy and books to read while she is on the toilet. Sit by her on the bathroom floor and play, sing and read to her while she is waiting to tinkle! It works!

Let her sit any time she wants.. make sure she has a safety seat so she doesn't fall in and cause fear. I used to let my little girl sit there and I would read ONCE UPON A POTTY. by ALona Frankel... I kind of use my own words and use the book as a guide.. She would follow me to the bathroom and sit down and ask me to read to her... It engages both mental abilities I think.. She's now two 1/2 and has been potty trained since 19 months.. SHe goes on her own, will say wipe front to back and wash her hands.. Do what is best for your child , everyone is diffrent some sooner some later.. She'll let you know. Hope this helps.. The M & M are also a nice trick and then you can use the concept. Now you need to brush your teeth after treats..

I went through this once with my son and two other times with my nieces. What seemed to work with all of them was finding a book or books that they like to read and put them in the bathroom, then once every couple hours when they were home and awake we would go sit on the potty and read. usually that would relax them enough and they would just let go. if they peed I would give them an M&M and poop got a hershey kiss. It worked like a charm! Also I am letting everyone on here know that I have these child safe kits that I am giving away to local mom's in the Tampa/St. Pete area. It's a card that holds a recent picture, info, and fingerprints of your daughter. If you are interested go ahead and contact me here or at ____@____.com and I can get you one. That way you are prepared in case something, god forbid, should happen and it gives you some piece of mind.

Continue letting her get on the potty when she asks and suggest it to her when she doesn't but don't force to if she makes a fuss. When we were potty training my stepdaughter she would get a few M&Ms for each successful visit to the potty. You could even give your daughter one or two just for sitting on the potty and then extra if she goes. I've also heard of people using stickers and a certain number equaling a special activity or treat but that's probably more effective for kids who are a little older. There are a TON of potty related books out there too, some even come with dolls that wet. It sounds like you're off to a good start.
