Postpartum Bleeding - Philadelphia,PA

I had my baby 10 days ago and had a normal amount of bleeding after she was born. About 2 days ago my bleeding slowed a lot, which seemed a little early to me but I wasn't complaining. Then yesterday I had a lot of really heavy bleeding, enough to soak a pad in less than an hour. I called my midwife and she said that since it had slowed so much maybe I had some pooled or something, suggested I massage my uterus and nurse my baby and call back if it didn't improve. It slowed down a lot, I took a nap, things seemed fine. Then about 3 hours later it happened again, this time with a golf ball sized clot and heavy bleeding that lasted about an hour. She called in a prescription for me to help make my uterus contract and slow the bleeding. Now today it's back to a really light flow. I'm happy that I haven't had anymore really heavy bleeding, but I'm wondering what could have caused all of this and I'm just nervous about it happening again. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

I meant to mention my activity level. Two days before the heavy bleeding I went to the grocery store because I was going stir crazy at home, but other than that my activity level has been fairly low. Yesterday morning I got my son dressed for school, my husband left to take him to school, I took a shower, then a nap, then nursed my daughter and was sitting on the bed when I felt the gushes of blood coming out. I really don't know what might have triggered it, activity 2 days before wouldn't have, right? It is true that after the heavy bleeding I've been taking it very easy for the last 24 hours, so that could be related to it slowing down.

What can I do next?

even with normal periods I find if I sit more than 30 minutes, in a certain way, when I get up I GUSH... when I laying down on my back almost flat I gush. I have a tipped Uterus, and was told that blood likes to pool there. After my 3 kids it was like yours. Light to almost none some days, and then others it was like I was shot. Though nothing came of it for me. I literally was sharing my kids diapers as a pad cause it was so heavy some days. I had no choice but to be active after all of them cause I was alone the majority of the time with 2 of my 3.

My bleeding was exactly what you described for about 3 weeks after both kids.
On and off. Gushing, then nothing, then huge clots. Just a normal process.
It'll stop on its own once your body rids itself of all of the building.

Unless you start to feel light headed and dizzy (excessive blood loss), I wouldn't worry about it.

I can't say it happened to me, but my first question as far as what might have caused it, is: what has your activity level been like? If you suddenly felt wonderful and got up and did some housework, or starting walking or doing some other not normally physically active stuff, but more than you HAVE been doing since the birth, then perhaps that increased physical activity could have caused more bleeding.
I'd bet that after you start bleeding more heavily, you also are more stationary and rest-minded... so maybe there is a correlation?
Continuing to nurse will help release the hormones that help your uterus to contract (which closes off those blood vessels and stops the bleeding).
Keep in touch with your midwife if the problem continues, of course.
Congrats on your new baby!

I had that happen with both pregnancies, worse after my second. Then to make it worse it happened once I stated getting my periods again. My son is 4 and it has finally started to get a little better. But the first day I have to wear a pad and tampon and change both every hour or less because they are soaked. If I don't wear both I have to change it every 20 to 30 mins. It is horrible, I feel like I can't leave the house and if I do I am constantly in the bathroom. Usually the second day now is not as bad, and by the 3rd day it is like a normal period. For the first few years I had 3 days of that heavy bleeding. I have been on iron pills because it made me severely deficient. It does not seem like this is super common tho. But bleeding that much postpartum could be cause for concern or as in my case it was nothing but the beginning of a pattern of it. It sounds like your midwife is not too concerned at this point. My dr did mention I have an enlarged uterus and polyps I think is what they said so that may have contributed to my problem. I think a lot of women have those. Just watch if it starts again. But right now it sounds like it probably just a normal variation. But if it gets worse again call your midwife right away. And nurse, nurse, nurse that baby lots, it will help. Even sometimes nursing more or less can effect the flow both ways. And nursing is a great way to get that uterus back in shape. Anyway, I hope that was the end of the heavy bleeding for you. Congrats on your new little one. Get lots of rest while you can!
