Possible Scoliosis in 7 Mo Old??

Hi,
I noticed about 2 days ago on my beautiful 7 mo old daughter that she seems to have a little bump along the left side of her spine (about halfway down and about a quarter of her spine long). Its only present when she sits not when she is lying or standing. Im trying to feel her spine to see if it is straight. Sometimes it seems straight to me and sometimes it seems slightly curved to the left. We just had a doctors appt and the pediatrician recommended a xray to rule out scoliosis. Im weary about giving a 7 mo an xray because of the radiation exposure. She has been trying to sit up on her own and arching her back when she is held because she wants to see what is going on behind her so we try to get her to stop but Im wondering could she have strained her back muscles or something and thats why there is a bump. The pediatrician didnt think so. Could we have started putting her sitting up too soon - around 3.5-4mos? I dont know what to do and would like some advice, recommendations, suggestions, etc. Thank you!

What can I do next?

Follow the doctor's advice, is my advice. Severe scoliosis is not something you want to ignore. They can take precautions with the xrays, and cover up her ovaries, etc with little protective pads.

I would follow the doctors advise immediately. Surely, the earlier something like this is diagnosed the more options you have. Hopefully you will get the results and your fears will be alleviated. All my best.

An x-ray is not going to harm her. Exposure to radiation via one x-ray is absolutely no big deal. In order for her to be exposed to dangerous levels it would have many, many x-rays.

I doubt that pulling her up to sit would have caused any problems. If the child isn't ready to do something like that, their body will resist or be unable.

Many people fear that allowing a baby to stand while holding your hands will cause them to be bow-legged. It won't. Most babies are a bit bow-legged for a time. It's actually a very normal part of their development. If the muscles of the leg are not strong enough for the baby to bare weight, the baby will not be able to do so.

Listen to your doctor. He/she really is looking out for your child's best interest.

This is the third time you've posted this question. What's up with that? Perhaps you haven't figured out how the system works? Sometimes two posts appear at the same time and that's what appears to have happened with the first 2 posts. But here's a third post several hours later. Do you know how to read the answers from posts? Or are you not getting the answers? Or ?????

Thanks, J.M.

A couple of things: My daughter, who is now 10, has a bump on her spine. It's basically a vertebrate that protrudes. The various docs we have had over the years have said it is nothing to be worried about. Second, I have been told that I have a scoliosis - curvature of the spine - but it's not problematic. I would imagine there are different levels of curvature and that some may not be an issue at all. However, since you're a mom of an infant and this will continue to bother you until you have a definitive answer; I would get a second opinion and an xray if necessary. Rest assured that you did nothing to cause whatever this is and more than likely it's not a "problem". Good-luck.

One X-ray won't hurt her, plus anything bad they could find needs to be found early to be addressed, if its not done anything that can happen will also be worse than a single X-ray. And I'd also suggest a pediatric chiropractor!

Kudos to you for noticing a problem and pushing for an answer. If my parents had done that I might not have any back pain today. Just remember that the early it's treated, the better the results.

My scoliosis wasn't diagnosed until it was too late to treat (short of major surgery) and the biggest advice I would give you is to get to a chiropractor right away. At this age their bones are still pretty soft and flexible, so if you get it taken care of now, there's a very good chance she won't have any issues when she is grown.

Personally I think an xray is pointless at this age. Most minor problems in a child this small can be diagnosed and corrected without any invasive tests. For example, my daughter was a late walker, and when she did start to walk it was only on her tiptoes. One trip to the chiropractor, they determined in about 30 seconds that the problem was in her upper neck (go figure???) and corrected it painlessly - I don't think my daughter even noticed. She instantly went to standing on flat feet and started walking more later that day, we never had that problem again.

I take my kids to the chiropractor with me, so they get adjustments about once every month or two, and it doesn't bother them. Message me if you want any more details!
