Pink Eye? - Cleveland,TX

My son woke up yesterday morning with a fever 100.something(can't remember exactly) he seemed to be feeling a little run down. Towards the afternoon his eye started turning pink and he told me it hurt. I just gave him fluids and let him rest and night I gave him motrin. This morning he wakes up and his eye looks perfectly normal (no swelling, goop, pinkness) but about 45 minutes after waking it has turned pink again. He told me it doesn't hurt. I can't see anything in it but I know I am no doctor. Just wondering if this could be pink eye? We have never had it before. If it's not better by tomorrow I'll take him to the doctor but if it sounds like pink eye I want to take him to the urgent care clinic today. TIA
He is four and has no fever this morning and is acting fine and ate his breakfast. He does not have a runny nose.

What can I do next?

Nope pink eye, is not always accompanied with crusty eye - that is only if it is bacterial pink eye. There is also viral pink eye (conjunctivitis) which has no discharge, my son has had pink eye for more than 2 weeks, and has had no discharge. And it is only in one eye.

i always look up rashes and such on image search. it helps me figure out what things are. it could be like too much sugar causing yeast in his body and it coming out on the sensitive skin around his eye or it could be pink eye. i did not recall people having fever with pink eye. sorry i am not more helpful. hoping you can omit things with image search...also look up "beginning stages of pink eye" often you get the worst of the worst with those image searches! good luck.

Pinkeye is usually accompanied with crusty eye. I would think maybe allergies or something else.

I've not seen pink eye manifest itself like that before...

If he has a fever again today and is feeling lethargic - I would call my pediatrician - you don't say how old he is - to ask them what they suggest...

In my personal opinion, it's not pink eye - as there is no goop or excessive tearing...

GOOD LUCK!!

Hi M. F,

Both of my kids(5 & 7) just dealt with pink eye. Neither of them ran a tempy with it and it lasted for days being constantly pink. They had crust real bad especially in the mornings, almost to the point of having a hard time opening their eyes for the first time. My daughter had mucus drainage, watery eyes, slight crust, pinkness and very very bad itching. My son had crust pretty bad, watery, pinkness and bad itching but never saw mucus discharge which was weird but they both definitely had pink eye. What I personally think and I not a doctor whatsoever is when his temp gets pretty high he could have had blood vessels that broke which can very well happen with temp. This has happened to me, my husband and kids when we have ran high temp. It can feel a little uncomfortable too. Also, if it's happened without fever then it could be allergies which can cause pink/red eyes and itching. My husband and daughter get this because of their allergies. They have been super bad lately. I do know that if he does seem out of it, not eating or drinking much, on going temp or anything you feel is concerning I would definitely make an appointment with the pedi by Monday. Just keep an eye on the little guy like you have been doing :).

It doesn't sound like pinkeye. You'd know if he had pinkeye, trust me. And there is no fever that goes along with it.

Maybe it's an allergy or irritation of the eye. If it's still there tomorrow & you're worried, then I'd say the doctor's visit is in order.

Sounds more like a minor sinus infection not pinkeye. I've had pink eye lots of times and it lasts for days and I've never had a fever with it.

I don't think it is pink eye. Pink eye usually has a lot of extra tearing and mucus that drains from the eye. It will also be a little swollen and itchy. They would be sensitive to the light. When he woke up in the morning more often than not his eye would have been crusted shut. This is from my experience with having had pink eye myself and several of my children have had it too. I would say that if he continues to have a fever take him in and check it out, but I wouldn't say that he had pink eye....it doesn't match what I have had in the past. Good luck and I hope he feels better.

According to our pediatrician there are 3 types of conjunctivitis (pink eye). Viral, bacterial and allergic. All 3 can have redness, swelling, itchiness, discharge/crusties and a feeling like sand is in your eye. Sometimes conjunctivitis is caused by complications to a cold or flu. (Which is what sounds like may be going on with your son.) Since there is no discharge and no swelling or pain, it sounds like it can wait until you take him to the pediatrician. No sense waiting in an urgent care, especially since it could be fine tomorrow if it was just caused by whatever bug he had.
