Pierced Ears - Henderson,NV

My daughter got her ears pierced in Nov for her birthday. We cleaned them and they healed nicely. We changed the earrings and the one got infected-she squeezed the back on too tight. So we got that all healed. Now she changed them again-and note-we are not using cheap, junky earrings. The one ear is getting yucky again-not red or inflamed, but is crusty-we clean them 2 times a day. Any suggestions on earrings? or a way to keep it clean. She says it does not hurt. Thx L.

Hi L.,

Sometimes even the expensive ones will do that..something in her system may also be interacting with something in the earring. Melaleuca oil (high grade tea tree oil) will prevent as well as heal inflammation and infection. It can be used every time she changes her earrings...

Hope this helps.

Pay attention to the material it's made of. Sometimes, skin can be sensitive to different things. My little sister can't wear gold or gold played earrings, but does just fine with the cheap-o type. My daughter can only wear sterling silver earrings. Anything else irritates her. So I would see what her piercing earrings are made of, and buy more of the same material. If they work, great! You know she is reacting to the material. If they don't, I'm not sure what else to do.

As for squeezing it on too tight, I would get some of the earring back with the caps, so they can't go too tight. (I know they sell them at Claire's Accessories... And it's probably a safe bet that you could find some at Walmart.)

What kind of metal are her earrings made of?

Disinfect the earrings before she puts it on, and her hands too.
My daughter dips her earrings in rubbing alcohol before putting in different earrings. And she cleans her fingers with it too.
For example.

She may just be sensitive. Even now, after having my ears done for 35 years, if I wear earrings for more then about 15 hours they start to get inflamed and crusty. I simply take them out at night and put them back in in the morning and that seems to do the trick.

Put some Neosporin or the like in the front and back of the earrings, spin them around to spread the medicine, then leave them alone. Make sure she's only touching them with clean hands and repeat this morning and night until cleared up.
I have 13 piercings that I leave in my ears permanently, but on the rare occasion I change earrings, I only put a new earring in after a short peroxide soak and a liberal application on Neosporin to the post.
Good luck!

Does she always remove earrings at night? That's a good practice to get into to avoid irritation. (Just my opinion.) Also, my ears actually get irritated, etc. when I wear my expensive diamond studs. When I wear the "cheap junky" earrings, I don't have any problems at all. You might consider getting her a little pair of hoop earrings or the kind that are all one piece that don't have any backings; then she can't put them on too tight. You can get a reasonably priced pair that are between "cheap junky" and expensive.

Good luck!!

I can only wear sterling silver earrings, or it irritates my skin. Not even the most expensive and pure gold will do. Platinum is also a no. I suspect your child can't wear one of the metals she's been using.

my girl cant wear anything but real golds or sergical steel. she cant even wear the sensitive ones for more then a day. maybe try some titanium/surgical steel hoops (in a gauge 18 or 20 if you can find them). or some reasonable priced gold loops.

She may just need the cheap junky earrings. I bought some really nice sterling silver ones and I am SO allergic. Just like what you are describing. I have the same problems with gold and the hypoallergenic ones. But, buy a good cheap pair for $5 from Target and I can wear them all day long! Its just a quirk that ears seem to do. Oh, and its only one ear. I agree with changing them often and taking them out at night.

Good luck!

Sounds like my daughter. She's allergic to nickel, which is used in a lot of jewelry because it's a soft, inexpensive metal. Look for nickel-free. Most stores have it and its not expensive.

I only allow my daughter to wear piercing earring. They never fall out, the backs don't touch the ears, and they are gold and hypoallergenic (for most people). You can get cute ones at sally beauty supply (the least expensive) or piercing pagoda (if you want to spend 4 times as much).
