My 2 1/2 year old son has the most persistent cough since Sunday. The Ped said to ride it out and give him Benedryl at night. He hardly sleeps because of the couphing, the Benedryl only helped to stop his runny nose. Is there any syrup I can give him to relieve his couph just a little at least. I feel so bad for him because the little guy is exhausted from coughing. Has had no fever, it's diagnosed as just a regular cold. Thank you for your help moms. Bernie

I put my kids in the bathroom and run the shower on hot so they are breathing the steam. I do this for about 10 minutes and then put them in a room with a vaporizer or humidifier. Do this several times a day or at night before bed. It helps a ton with my kids and it helped when I was babysitting a boy who had a severe asthma attack and I couldn't get in touch with his mom...

i have a question for you. does this cough get worse at night? is it wet or dry? it could be asthma. my daughter had persistant coughing and running nose (allergies) and no over the counter med would calm the cough. it took almost 2 months of repeated dr visits to diagnose her with asthma (at 10 months). she takes meds via a nebulizer. its just a thought. also she never weezed! but you could tell her airway was saturated and inflamed.

try a cool mist humidafier. i use generic delsym with my 2 1/2 year old daughter to help with her cold coughs. i give her 1/4 tspn along with her benadryl and asthma meds.

delsym!!! Childrens of course but this is what I have found to really help my children sleep at night. They say not to give kids under 4 or 6 cough meds but delsym has really helped I would do like 1/4 to 1/2 tsp for him (depending on his weight) only at night it supresses it then do like a childrens mucinex to help the phlem loosen up and help him get it out. If he is having a coughing fit warm apple juice helps for the moment but the delsym seems to help for about 8-10 hours its a 12 hour medicine. Just be sure not to give him anything else that contains the dextromehorphan during the 12 hours. I think the dr prescribed the benedryl just to help him sleep or if he suspects postnasal drip it could help dry the sinuses so there isn't the drainage. I would try the delsym.

There are cough syrups by Hyland's. Go to your natural food store and look for it. It works well for my kids. Hyland's being the products which are natural and homeopathic.

Now, did your Ped check his chest? Listen to it?
If any of his symptoms gets worse... you need to get him re-checked... to rule out other things, or if the congestion gets worse. Or if he develops a fever etc.

He also has to drink lots of water... to stay hydrated to keep the mucous from getting too thick, and to expel it.

If your son is coughing so much and persistently... I would tell the Doctor. And see what he/she recommends.
Benadryl, is not a "cough" suppressant.
There are cough "suppressants" and cough syrups which HELP the mucous to expel, ie: "expectorant" type cough syrups. With a cough and mucous..it is important that the mucous is coming out. IF his chest is congested.

Next, a "cough" also can occur because of post-nasal drip... from the nose, as the mucous drips down the back of the throat... it makes a person cough. SO, this could also be why he is coughing and why the Doctor suggested Benadryl... to dry out his nose mucous. But..it does not seem to help him. So tell the Doctor.

So coughs can occur or originate from either: (1) the chest or, (2) the nose post-nasal drip. Or both.

All the best,
Susan
