Pedi or Wait?

Hi Moms - I asked about my son yesterday - he's a little sick and I'm trying to decide if I should go to the after-hours pedi in our area. He's lethargic - he didn't want to play much yesterday, no running around - not scary lethargic, just not his usual self. Very low grade fever - just around 99.2, appetite is off, throat is red, and one tonsil is HUGE. His nose isn't runny, but he's stuffy enough that with the tonsil his sleeping is horrible. (and, of course, mine is too). He's waking up at least 3-4 times a night, and just doesn't sound good when he's asleep.

I don't want to be paranoid mama, but I don't want him to be so uncomfortable, and I worry about strep. I've never had it, but I know kids can get it. He does go to daycare, and he's not often sick, so I want to take care of it.

Am I being a paranoid mama, or does this sound pedi visit worthy?

For those Dallas/Plano TX area moms - pediatric after hours in Dallas and Plano is open nights and weekends and charges like a pediatrician and not urgent care. Very helpful for working parents.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Took him in and glad I did - no fever, but he has STREP - and it was SO positive for strep that the culture showed positive as soon as they dipped it, before the control strip changed color (or whatever they do).

Apparently my guy has a high pain tolerance or something cause even the doc said "most kids that have strep act a lot sicker than he is."

We're staying home tomorrow - got the antibiotics going already and rest time :)

The lethargy alone would be rearson enough for me. MY daughter is 2 and I would take her somewhere with that happening for a day.

I say go ahead and take him in. You'll feel better knowing that you went and saw the doctor. They can test for Strep and ease your mind. Peace of mind is huge.

Better safe than sorry. I'd take him in. That way you won't have to worry tonight.

Depending on the method you used to take his temp 99.2 is not a fever. Call your pediatrician they will tell you if he should be seen today or if it can wait for tomorrow.

if your son's tonsils are huge, red and swollen and he's lethargic - take him to the pediatrician and have him tested for strep...strep does not always come with high fevers...

Follow your mommy instincts...I'd personally rather err on the side of caution when it comes to my kids...

GOOD LUCK!!

I would go to the doctor. If he needs an antibiotic at least you can get it in him quicker than if you took him tomorrow.

I would just call my Dr. Give him the symptoms and he can call something in for you. The only part that concerns me about his symptoms is the "waking 3-4 times a night and just doesn't sound good when he's asleep". That's concerning. Blessings....

Take him in, ASAP. Please don't let "I don't want to worry about being paranoid mom" keep you from letting the doctor do what the doctor is there for -- examine your child. If he has strep, which is very common and makes the rounds ALL year long, not just in winter as some parents think, he needs antibiotics now, not in a few days when he's more miserable. Untreated strep can become scarlet fever (happened to my friend's kid).

I see over and over and over on Mamapedia posts like this one with the message being "I am afraid to go to the doctor with my child in case it's really nothing; I don't want to be seen by the doctor as paranoid, etc.." If it's nothing, hooray. It's not embarrasing or wrong to go to the doctor for nothing. You're not talking about going because of a runny nose with zero other symptoms; you said his tonsil is "HUGE" (your own capitals) and his throat is red. That's not nothing. Please go.

I'd take him in. I don't think being cautious is the same thing as paranoid. Hope he feels better soon!
