Parking and Sidewalks, Silly Pet Peeve?

Ok...so my neighbor is having friends over and cars are parked on the street, one right dab in the middle of my sidewalk. This is such a pet peeve of mine ever since I attended a black tie affair in the pouring rain one night. A guest blocked the sidewalk and we were forced to walk through the wet, muddy grass, ugh! It's beautiful and sunny here but still I'm annoyed, they could have stopped just 3 feet behind to clear my sidewalk. Am I being silly?

Oops, I mean walk leading to my front door from street. My neighborhood does not have traditional sidewalks along street. Sorry

What can I do next?

You could call the police about that because it's illegal to park on a sidewalk. However, I would NOT call the 911 number unless they tell you to.

How can they block the sidewalk? I dont understand.

If they are parked on the sidewalk I'm sure you can make a call to your highway patrol and they will have them move it.

If the sidewalk is next your driveway that is the only way it is against the law. In any emergency for no reason should a driveway or your walkway be blocked.

talk to your neighbors and explain the situation before you call the cops, if they refuse then call them.

Get a sign that say do not park in the driveway,

People have the whole street to park in, they don't need to block the sidewalk. That drives me crazy. Around here, it will also get you towed very quickly. Do people just not think about pedestrian traffic at all?! Because they can't park 10 feet further away and walk to the front door, they need to make sure all pedestrians have to walk into the street to pass by? It's the height of self-centered behavior. Call the police and have them deal with it.

This annoys the HECK out of me too. I have had to tell motorcyclists visiting a neighbor that the sidewalk is not a place to park their bikes. PLease move so my kids can ride their bikes safely. They were happy to oblige.
I would just explain to the neighbors that when they are planning an event, have them remind the guests to be courteous. I like the sign idea and maybe a note on the car of the offending vehicle. I don't believe people think twice about this most times.
I would not call the police for this. I hope you all can get this straightened out neighbor to neighbor:).

i have no problem calling the police when necessary, but i'm a little taken aback at how many people go there first.
can't you talk to your neighbor?
no, you're not being silly. this is certainly an eye-roller. it just seems like a reasonably easy fix.

Call the Police. It is against the law in almost every town to block a public access area, ie sidewalk or alley. I would just tell them there is a car blocking the sidewalk and could they have them move it to a better place. If they don't move it they may find it has been towed.

Even parking in your own driveway, if someone complains that you have blocked the sidewalk your own car in your own driveway can be towed at your own expense.

Yes, you're being silly. Lighten up. I've never even thought about that. I know not to block mailboxes. But, this is the first time I've heard not to block the walkway to a house. Call your police non-emergency and ask if there is even an issue. Unless you are handicapped and need a certain spot on the street to park, I've seen signs where handicapped signs designate one car spot for a resident in front of their house.

Politely tell your neighbors that you need the person who blocked the area to move their vehicle. IF they don't move it and it bothers you, call the police but be warned: this may make your neighbor an enemy if you get the police involved.

So you are talking about people parking on *their* driveway or the driveway of the house they are invited to but across the section that intersects with the sidewalk? If your sidewalks are three feet in like ours are then yes, you are being silly. Backing up they are sticking out in the street and will get their back end hit.

Can people walk to the sidewalk from your drive way, then walk the sidewalk to your door?

Do you not have sidewalks all long the curbs? On our street we have sidewalks all along the curb, so it does not matter as long as people do not block the drive ways.
