Hi,
We are planning to buy a house either in Plano or Frisco. We found some options in Plano but those houses come under Lewisville ISD. My daughter is going to start Kindergarten this year and we are new to Dallas area. I have absolutely no idea about ISDs. Can you tell me if you think Lewisville ISD is good? Some people say that for Elementary School any ISD is fine,is that true? Should we not bother about ISD till middle school. I want your opinion. please let me know. Thank you.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everyone,

I am extremely overwhelmed by your quick responses. I thank each and everyone of you. You gave me a lot to think about. I didn't realize even in same ISD each school can be different. I guess I will go online and do some more research. I will let you know how it went. Thank you once again

I would look for a neighborhood where you would be happy with the schools over the long run. The years go by quickly. We live in Frisco and have kids in Frisco ISD and have been very happy. We have friends also in Frisco who are in the Lewisville ISD. I think they are very happy with their elementary school, but are concerned about the commute for H.S. In fact, there are several whole neighborhoods in Frisco that are trying to convert from Lewisville ISD to Frisco ISD. I don't know why, but if that many people are looking for a change, there must be some reason.

Lewisville ISD is one of the best school districts in the area. My child graduated from Denton schools but, I chose to work for Lewisville ISD.

LISD is a great district with some great schools. That being said it is a large district covering cover several cities. Some of the areas are more at an economic disadvantage that trickles into the schools. So you really need to look at the individual schools that cover the communities you are considering it.

LISD as a whole is a good school district, but it is huge. Some schools are good and others are not. It all depends on where you are. I would check each school out individually. I'm in Flower Mound and my daughter goes to Timber Creek and we love it. I would avoid going to Lewisville the town. I have heard from several people that there is a problem with bilingual issues. When hiring teachers they are looking more at being able to speak spanish rather than there teaching qualifications. My friend pulled her kids because at the first school play they would do a scene in English then stop and do it in spanish, for those kids and parents that dont speak English. She said her child was getting less help due to the teachers focusing on the kids that dont speak English.

My step-daughter attended Creek Side elementary and it I loved the teacher there. I understand elementary is good there but that the upper schools are not so good. I can't speak from expierience though. I will say that while she attended some guy that had done shows at the school tried was able to abduct a child from the school by just going through the front door. It scared us to death! My step-daughter was absent that day thank goodness. Their security is not good at all. She is now with us in Allen ISD and they have someone posted at the front door. If you come into the school, you must be finger printed and it scans a database for registered sex offenders before you proceed. If it gets a hit, you don't get in. You also have to provide ID. So, I would verify their security measures. That is all I can say about my expierience with Lewisville ISD. I hope this helps.

Sounds like you are looking into the area that will feed into Hebron High. Wonderful schools! Check out the LISD website...it will give you a better idea of each campus.

I went to kindergarten all the way through my senior year in LISD. I know that when it was said and done, about 15 of us graduated together that had been going to school together since then. It was nice but it didn't really matter because we had all made new friends by then. It is a good district. Some schools are better than others. I loved my elementary school and very much disliked my middle school. You are going to win some and lose some but all in all I would recommend it.

Both of our kids are in LISD and are doing wonderfully. My niece is also in a different LISD school and doing great. I would recommend it to anyone...

However, as with any large district, you're going to have individual schools that are better or worse than others. I would check out your school at http://www.lisd.net/lisdschools/index.html. You can find out how the school your kids would go to was rated by the TEA, along with some student/teacher ratios, what additional programs (specials, etc.) are offered at your school (they vary from campus to campus... some offer a language, where others offer drama, etc.). Although many LISD schools are rated Exemplary or Recognized, there are those that are simply "Academically Accecptable" (one step up from Academically Unacceptable). In addition, if the school you're considering has a PTA website, I would see how active the PTA is and even try to speak to one or two of the parents (some LISD schools have 40-50 parents on their board (lots of "co-chairs", while others stuggle to keep 4-5 parents on their board).

Good luck! I know this is a big decision.

Research both online with the tea and with the specific school sites.

We specifically chose Plano for the school district when we moved here in 1989 with no children. We now have 1 daughter 14yrs old and no regrets with Plano ISD. If we did not have the schools available to us right now within PISD, we would either move to Highland Park to be in HPISD OR go private.

Do your research.

All three of my children went to school in the LISD. As with any district, there are great schools and some not so great. I would think any of the schools you are looking at in the Plano or Frisco area that are actually in the LISD would be good schools. As a former teacher, I was extremely happy with the education my children received in the Lewisville ISD.

I taught for LISD for 5 years in Flower Mound and have to say it was one of the best elementary schools I've ever seen. Not all schools in LISD are that exceptional, but that generally applies to all ISD's. Overall, I think LISD is an outstanding district with well qualified teachers and administrators who care for children and really care about improving their district and themselves. I taught in another district a few hours from here and their best school wasn't nearly as great as most LISD schools. Unfortunately, my children will not attend school in LISD, but a good parent and teacher relationship can make a real difference in your child's education no matter where they attend. Welcome to the Dallas area. I hope you find just what you are looking for!

Hi Sandhya, I completely understand the confusion. We moved here in 2006, but our first child started school fall of 2007. In '07 we bought a house in Flower Mound - Lewisville ISD because it was closer to my husband's work. I found out pretty quickly that the schools in Lewisville ISD run the range from great to no so great. My son's elementary, Timber Creek was initially rated Exemplary when we bought our house in Spring. That year the TAKS test results changed the rating so that by fall, the school had dropped to acceptable. That first year, our child received weekly homework worksheets and reading assignments that required writing a 2 sentence book report. It seemed to me that the school wanted to be sure that the children bring up the schools test scores by pushing the youngest grades so they'll be better prepared. I realize that this can happen at any school, no matter where it is located, but I was very concerned that the school was more concerned about testing than educating the whole child. By that spring, my husband took a job in Plano, so we opted to move. We moved to an established neighborhood in Plano. My son began attending Hedgecoxe elementary in Plano ISD April '08. The experience was like night and day. His new kindergarten class was a lot less stressful with no homework. He has been there an entire year now and we are very happy with the school. The new neighborhood has a higher percentage of parents involved and the PTA is very active. Our decision to move to Plano had more to do with not wanting a commute due to high gas prices at the time than school, but we have definitely benefited.

So after that long story, I guess my answer is if in your place I would choose a home in either Plano ISD or Frisco ISD.

Just to throw some more at you. I am sure you are already a little overwhelmed. When we moved to Texas 4 years ago with our 3 girls who were already in school it was a big decision. We ultimately chose Frisco ISD. I really believe that between Plano, Frisco, or Lewisville you are going to have a great school. If you find a place you are happy with (neighborhood, location, school) then it will trickle down to your child(ren).

I agree, check it out by school. Once you find a specific house, feel free to ask us mamas about the schools it will feed to. Despite all of the positive things you've heard about most of the LISD schools, I know a teacher that now works in LISD who hates teaching at her school (you have to wait 3 yrs to request a transfer) b/c of difficulties caused by language barriers and lack of parent involvement and the instability caused by the socio-economic situation of the families. She really feels like she can't do her job and it frustrates her.

If your elementary is exemplary, then it is fine. All Frisco High Schools are good. I would be careful about LISD middle and high schools. If I were choosing, Frisco is a better option long-term.

We recently moved out to Prosper and love it.
