One Year with Only Two Teeth?

My DS is going to turn one next week and he still only have two teeth on the bottom. Is this normal? I heard how fast his teeth comes out is hereditary? Both my husband and I don't really know when our teeth came out when we were babies. My son had been teething since 4 months and his two teeth finally came out at 7 months.

What can I do next?

My son didn't get ANY teeth until he was 13 months old. Late teethers in both my family and my husband's.

Sounds like you are talking about my children. Both my kids bottom teeths just sat right under the skin since 4 months of age and didn't pop through until 1 week before their first birthday. They are 3 and 4 years old now and have full mouth of teeth. So, I say nothing to worry about.

Good luck!

It's totally fine. Some kids teethe later than others. I know kids who had 6-8 at their first bday and others who had 0 or 1. You have absolutely nothing to worry about.

1 year old is a good time to take him for his first dentist visit anyway. They'll do x-rays and will be able to set your mind at ease about this.

My gues is he's fine. There's a huge range in development especially for physical stuff like teeth. My son had all 20 baby teeth at 14 months. That's not normal either, but it was fine.

Find a good pediatric dentist in your area (ask your own dentist for a referral if you can't find one) and enjoy your little gummy kid :-)

This happened with all three of my kids. My twins were around the same age when they got their first teeth. I looked at it this way, the longer it takes to get them the less time they have to hurt them. They will come in, some just take longer than others.

My daughter cut her first tooth at 13 months, and her permanent teeth were a little later than average, too. It was kinda nice, because she was old enough to cope better. She has very straight, strong and beautiful teeth, and I think her baby teeth were probably healthier for appearing so late.

There is a hereditary component, but genetic factors can be so complex that there's often not a clear link from parent to child.

Normal! My daughter didn't get her first 2 bottom teeth until 10 months. The top 2 started poking through around 13 or 14 months. Now she's 2 and has a mouthful of them! :)

It is completely normal! Babies cut teeth at surprisingly different rates. Your son's teething sounds very similar to my daughter's who is now 17 months. My daughter didn't get tooth three and four until right after her first birthday. However, almost every other baby we knew who was around a year old, too, already had 6-8 teeth. My daughter is just now cutting her first molar where every baby we know who is 13 months or older already has two molars.

Since he has two teeth already, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just an example of how differently baby teeth, a friend of mine whose baby is just now 17 months only has 6 teeth while another friend of mine whose baby is 15 months already has 14!!

Long story short, there are no rules at all about teething. They will come at all different rates so it is really hard to put ages on it. At least it won't hurt as badly if he is a biter...haha. My daughter is a huge biter. Good luck!!

Our son didn't cut any teeth until after 1. He then cut every tooth by the time he was 2. He did teeth from around 4 months.

He is almost 7 now and still has all his baby teeth.

I have an 11 month old in my daycare who has no teeth at all yet... I don't think it's typical, but I think anything is wrong. They say that the longer it takes to get teeth the stronger they are... I don't know if there's any truth to that!

Both my kids did not get teeth until after they turned 12/13months old. My son is now 9 and so far has lost only 2 of his teeth. Funny how we are always in a rush - but dentist says all is good.

I wasn't worried when they were little since I was breastfeeding , I was okay with it. ;-)

I wouldn't worry about it. My little girl only had 2 teeth when she turned 1 (the bottom 2). She had two more come through at 13 months, and then a bunch came through around 15-16 months. Her doctor said that as long as she gets the first one by 15 or 18 months, they don't worry.

Hi M. - I don't think you have anything to worry about. My son got his first tooth on his first birthday and they all started popping in more rapidly after that. I was told that there are even health benefits (stronger teeth/less too decay) when they come in later. I'm not sure why other than when a baby gets teeth later, they are protected from decay that can occur from drinking sweetened drinks from the bottle.

My daughter was late getting her teeth in begining at 15 months. There is a very wide range of normal. Don't worry about it. Just make sure those teeth are well taken care of and healthy. Get them used to brushing nightly.

both my kids got their first tooth AFTER they were 12 months old. They were very late teethers. The dentist said this is fine and normal. He also said it can be a very good thing because they have less time to build decay and possibly have cavities in their baby teeth.
