Oh, Those Night Sweats!

I'll be 45 in January and entering what my GYN calls the "perimenopausal" years. Both my mother and I started our periods at age 11, and if I follow in her footsteps I'll be menopausal at age 48. I had my first child at age 36 and due to age-related secondary infertility I was never able to have another baby.

Although my cycles are still amazingly regular, in the past few months I've started having night sweats every night for about 3 nights before my period starts. I wake up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat from head to toe but I don't feel warm. In fact, I tend to feel cold because I'm soaking wet. I have to change my pj's and put a towel underneath me to keep the drenched sheets on my side from soaking my clean pj's (I then change the sheets after my husband gets up in the morning). As soon as my period starts the night sweats abruptly stop and don't return until about 3 days before my next period begins. I've taken to sleeping with a towel underneath me a few days before I expect my period to start in anticipation of the night sweats. These night sweats are not hot flashes; I've yet to experience one of those. Other than these annoying incidents I'm healthy, fit and within my normal weight range.

My GYN tells me night sweats are normal and simply part of the perimenopausal process, and as such there's nothing I can do to stop them. Maybe, maybe not, but does anyone know of some way to reduce their severity and/or duration without relying on hormone treatments or other artificial means? One of my friends who is menopausal swears by soy, but it's expensive and hasn't been proven to reduce the effects of menopause.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi, everybody --

Thank you all for your suggestions and for sharing your stories with me. I was concerned about not getting many responses, as the demographic on this site appears to skew considerably younger than my age. But I was pleased to see how many of my fellow 40-plus moms came through. I still haven't decided what to do about the night sweats, and naturally I didn't get them before the period following my posting my message. My annual exam and Pap are due in January, and I'm going to take my gyn's advice to have bloodwork done to measure my hormone and thyroid levels just to see where I'm at.

Thanks again, ladies...you rock!

hi S.,

while nights sweats are common in menopausal and peri-menopausal women they don't HAVE to be part of the process. i am a practitioner of chinese medicine (acupuncture, herbs etc) and one of the things i commonly treat are symptoms related to menopause. treating hormone-related issues is one of the areas that chinese medicine really shines. if you know one you trust then try him/ her before trying the hormone therapy (which has its own side effects to be reckoned with). i have seen many women make the transition into menopause seamlessly. good luck...

Hi, S.!

I have been experiencing them, too! They started this year. I just turned 44 last month. But I gained a lot of weight - about 30 pounds this year! I'm tired all the time and I have developed asthma. I was 11 when I first had my period, too. I have one daughter and she is going to be 15 on 12/1.

I don't have any advice but I would be interested in any advice that you do receive!

Good luck!

Hello Dear S. C,

I sympathize with your symptoms.

I have a suggestion for you. I have a client who began with me just as she was entering menopause 7 years ago.

With regular exercise, healthy eating and soy in an organic form, she had much decrease in her symptoms.

These days she is taking an organic product I brought to her from my visit in Peru. I have taken it myself for help with fatigue. It is called Organic, Gelatinized, Maca. Maca is actually a tuber grown high in the Andes of Peru.

You can google it to get more info than I have time to write here. I and many friends of mine have benefited from taking this natural supplement daily. One can get it in powder or capsule form. I take either 2 capsules per day, in the morning or 1 tbs of powder in a smoothie with my breakfast. My client I mentioned before, takes 2 capsules in the morning and 2 in the afternoon and she has no more mid afternoon slumps, increased energy, and her weight has balanced out.

This product has as one of it's top benefits listed, decrease in peri, menopausal, post-menopausal symptoms. Increased libido, fertility, energy, balancing blood pressure, and the list is extensive.

We travel to Peru a few times per year because my boyfriend is from there. We intend to begin selling it here in the states. It is already sold in varying forms, but the quality, freshness, and purity of our source is unmatched.

Keep in touch with me and I'll sell you some of ours when we return in March with the next batch.

In the meantime, get the kind that says it's guaranteed organic and gelatinized.

Let me know what happens.

Best to you and yours,
D.

I just wanted to tell you about my experience. I am 50, do not have bad hot flashes, but I was so blasted erratic in my mood. I had never taken birth control pills in my life. The doctor recommended them, and it was WONDERFUL. I evened out as I describe it. I stayed on for 3 years and went off. Each year the doctor would do a hormone assessment to see if my hormone levels had dropped off enough that I should stop. And then I did. I have not had a period since Feb...rare spotting once every 3 mons...until now. I am glad I did what I did.
I hope you have found a solution!!

Hi S., Night sweats are normal, but they are NOT nice! I notice a difference in severity depending on my diet sometimes; you may find if you pay attention to what you eat and drink that some things make the night sweats worse. Caffeine may be on of the things that affects you. Red wine is another one. I also found that prayer helps me. Accepting that this is part of growing older and wanting it to be a bit more graceful, I thank God for the process and pray that it will be easier. I find that this helps me a great deal, and for me, the night sweats were much worse before I started praying. Prayer helps the other symptoms too, such as hot flashes and chills. I hope you find this helpful. Ginnie

There are some issues with too much soy though and I'd research that and decide if it's ok for you.

My mother got them bad till she took Evening Primrose Oil Capsules every single day.. you can research that as well and talk to your doctor. She SWEARS it is her only real help!

Good Luck!

Hi S.,

Don't feel alone, it is common to begin night sweats at this age and even younger. I have recently joined a company called Arbonne, that has pure and safe health an wellness products.

I know 2 people that have used this product called "phyto prolief". This product is bontically-based and contains Chaste tree, dong quai, evening preimrose oil, red clover and black cohosh extracts, USP progestrone. And have been told by their testimony that is works wonderful. You only need 1/4 tsp (which it is in a pre-metered pump and one pump equals 1/4 tsp) that needs to be rubbed on your soft tissues, like your neck, inner arms, face, palms of your hands and soles of you feet.

This should be done once in the evening and once in the morning. The cost of the product is $22.10 plus tax, plus shipping for 2.5 fl oz so it will last you months.

I would be happy to send you a weeks worth of samples to try, with no cost to you at all. I truly believe in products and would be very happy to have you try it.

I can be reached at ###-###-#### *(home) if you would like me to send you so samples. or to read more about go to :

Good Luck :) Sincerely,

Marie Patrick

Hi S.: I know all too well what you are going through and I feel for you! In 2005 I had an ovary removed and almost a year to the day 2006 the other had to come out as well. For 2 weeks I suffered through full blown menopause which started almost immediately. It became so brutal that I am now on estrogen patches. Although it has made a dramatic difference in the way I feel I would like to find a more natural substitute. My cousin being a few years younger than I, her 46 and I 49 has recently been getting minor hot flashes/night sweats. She has been taking Black Cohash and noticed a difference in just a few weeks. What you and I experience cannot be labeled minor however this may be something to consider. Good-Luck to you!

S.,
Yes, lots of my friends swear by soy also but medically it's not proven. But remember, if you think it will help you, then it will help. Placebo effect can't be explained by medical data. There are other phytochemicals out there that are reputed to help also. Read up on them and try fish oil as daily supplement. Also look at your overall diet.
No one ever tells you about all these fun surprises that await us as we grow older. Better we shouldn't know, I guess. Friends of mine always go to bed with multiple nightclothes at the foot of the bed, so it's easier to change in the middle of the night. I know it sounds counter intuitive but do you best to stay hydrated as well.
Like to say it gets better but it doesn't, not for a while. Some women take 10 years to go through the change. Ugh.
