Not 100% Sure Yet, Bur Just Putting Feelers Out

We have a beautiful full-blooded Australian Shepherd that may need a new home. Her name is Sydney, she is one and a half years old, housebroken, great with kids and other pets and we absolutely LOVE her. Problem is, we had to move two months ago and we lost our backyard. Since the move, both she and my other dog have become full-time housedogs. My other dog is quite a bit older and has adapted fine. In fact, he now prefers to be indoors. But Sydney paces at the back door, whining to get out and there is just not enough room here for her to run or play. I take her on walks frequently, but it is off-the-chain action that I feel she is craving.

We don't want to part with her, but I really feel she would be happier if she had a backyard to run and play in. Would anyone be interested?

What can I do next?

Hi, You don't say where you live, but there are many dog parks in the area. They are free and the dogs have a great time. Aussies are very social and would probably make lots of friends the first time out. If you do decide to find her a new home, please go the Aussie Rescue route. I wouldn't use Craigslist to find a home for a pet. Just a bit risky, IMHO.

Good Luck, Nana

Just a thought, what about some type of dog run or chainlink fence?
They're less expensive than wood and if you're not for sure on parting with her you could try that.

When I was little my Mom made a dog run (by herself) when we moved in with my Aunt to seperate our dogs from hers.
It was fairly simple to do.....I beleive she used 4 ft. pickets.

Well anyway, if you can't do that then I would also suggest Craigslist.
http://craigslist.org

I've found some great homes for my foster animals on there and people that are kind enough to send me pics of the animals through emails which makes me know they're doing good!

Good luck in whatever you choose...I know parting with a pet is never easy.

There is a really terrific Austrailian Shepard rescue in the area. I bet if you contacted them, they would have suggestions and help you find a good home. A lot of the Aussie people in the area also do agility, so you might contact some of the agility schools in the area to see if somebody is interested in trainng and having Sydney for their agility dog. I bet she would love it.

If you do have to get rid of her, let me know. My father in law has an Australian that he LOVES, so he might be willing to spoil another one! He lives on a farm in central TX, so there's LOTS of room to run and play.

I'm not sure but I think we would like to take your dog if you decide to part with it. The only dogs we have ever had have been registered Australian shepherds. We have not had one since May of 1995 when we moved from Dallas to Miami. We were going to graduate school and knew we would be living in a tiny apartmet. We gave our dog away because we knew he would have been miserable with us gone all of the time and not having a yard to run in. We now have an almost 4 year old daughter who loves dogs. We have not gotten one because I just didn't want to go through the whole house breaking time. I would definitely be interested since your dog is good with children and is house broken. We do have a yard and take frequent walks to explore the neighborhood. I know my daughter and my husband would be so excited. Let me know if you think any more about it. I know how hard it is. We were so sad when we had to give our dog away so many years ago. My husband loved that dog! Thanks, M.
