Nook? Kindle? What?

So my 10 year old wants one of these things and I have not idea how to make this decision! I am not a big reader and the last thing I think I would want to do is read a whole book on a screen. Needless to say we are considering getting him one and so far I have found the coolest one to be the Nook that has a ton of options for the screen and inexpensive downloads, etc. Any suggestions? I typically would not even get something this expensive for a 10 year old but he is a big reader and I am all about encouraging that in any way possible.

Look forward to your input!

I would not buy one for a 10 yr old. they are really expensive. just by him some real books.
you will spend about the same for the book in ebook format as you will in paper format. But he can't trade them with his friends or take them to a used bookstore and sell them back. you can trade between nook readers but the other person would have to have a nook as well.
Also he wouldn't be able to take it to school with him and read his books at school , it would likely be labeled an electronic toy .

Hubby has a Kindle, and it's pretty cool. We just looked at the Nook today...they are coming out with a new one next month, it will be $249. The guy behind the desk made sure to tell us about the cool library option...where basically you can rent books from your library right onto your Nook... technology is The Bomb these days...what a great time to be a kid!

I am sure your kid will be excited to get either!

I have the older Kindle and LOVE it. I have found plenty of books on there for my 10 year old son, that were FREE!!!!
I would love to see what the newer one is like. I would be a little weary of the internet access on it though. Maybe check in to child protectors.

I have done a lot of research on these devices because I am in the market myself. I am going to purchase the Sony Ereader. You can purchase books, but you can also download FREE books from the library. :)

I have had a Sony reader for almost 2 years. I actually drove almost 2 hours last spring to spend 7 minutes (I timed it) to fill out a short form to get logged into a different counties Library system , it had to be done in person, to be able to acces their ebook system of free library books. My county just recently, about a month ago, has this same vendor service! LOL. But I love that I can log in on my puter, search for books and download them to use for up to 21 days.

My reader is older and has no WiFi. I am not sure? DO the new Sony's have that? My problem is I seriously dislike proprietary things..like Kindle...many Mac products and such. Even my old SOny point and shoot camera is (where you HAVE to use their adapters or whatever..or their producyts, rather than universal ones. In the eReader instance, this is why I got the Sony when I did..the others were not so universal.

But overall..I love love love mine!

I'm not sure how the new Nook is that is soon to come out, but I heard the first version had a glare that was hard to see the screen under certain lights and including sunlight. The Kindle didn't have the problem. Nook may have corrected it by now.

My Mom has the Kindle... she loves it very much. Its very cool.
But I have heard, both are good products.

As an aside... I would just make SURE, your son is responsible... does not take it to school etc... because it can get lost or stolen.
My Mom, being a 'responsible" adult... once forgot her Kindle at an office where she was on an appointment. She didn't realize, she "forgot" it... until a few hours later. Fortunately, someone gave it to the front desk...

all the best,
Susan

I adore my Kindle. There are a ton of websites where you can download books for free on your computer and transfer them to your Kindle - any public domain book. You do need to purchase recent books, but I love the convenience of turning on the wireless service and getting a book within seconds. You can also now access google, facebook, tons of magazines and subscribe to newspapers. Easy to use, easy to read.

A librarian friend of mine warned me away from the kindle. Many libraries allow you to download books for a period of time, then they expire - but not with the kindle. You have to buy them all!
