Night Time Leaks

My son is 18 mos and lately he has been soaking through his diaper at night. We had this problem when he was around 12 mos so we started using Huggies Over Night Diapers. We have him in the size 4 which should be just right for him. He weighs 25 lbs. I thought about moving him up a size, but 25 lbs is at the very small end of the size 5 and I'm afraid they'll leak around the legs. The Huggies Over Nights are the only brand of over night diaper available in my area, and sometimes they are hard to find in the right size. He leaked through 3 nights in a row last week so I've started rationing his evening drinks. Last night after 6pm he had 3 oz juice and 3 oz milk. I don't know how but there was way more than 6 oz of liquid in that diaper! Maybe it was all the water he drank during his bath! :)
Any advice would be appreciated.

So What Happened?

I have a fairly full pack of the size 4 overnights, so I've been adding a serenity pad to them. It's been working great! When we use up all the size 4 I'll start buying size 5. Thanks for all your help Moms!

I had the same problem and I did move up to the next size and it solved it. It is a little, tiny bit big but not enough to even notice or be concerned about. It does fit quicker than you think! Try the next size up and see if that works for you. Good luck

We also use Huggies Night Time diapers. My son is in size 6, which is also very hard to find. We now order them online at www.diapers.com.

There's a product called Diaper Doubler's that is made for exactly this problem. It's an insert you can put in the diaper during the night time or any time you might need the leak protection. I'm sure it's cheaper than using two diapers and works much better. They can be found at Babies r us, but a lot of pharmacy's have them also. It looks something like a feminine product but is made only for extra absorbency. It would be easier than buying two sizes of diapers, too.

Go for the bigger size and don't worry about the weight limits. I don't think it'll be a problem. We had to go up a size or two in the Overnights...I have a very leaky baby as well!

My daughter only weights around 25 or so lbs and she is 17 months. We had the issue of a few leaks but mostly her diapers were always either to tight on her or sagging so bad they fell off. We did switch to size 5 of which helped some but they would still start to fall off with as active as she is. the weights on the package are just what they think they should fit. all babies don't have the same body shape.

we switched to the dollar general brand of pullups and they cost about 8.50 for a package of 29 but they abosrb better and is much easier for her to run around in. she wears the 2t-3t size in the pullups. you may also try the plastic pants to go over the diaper it may help contain it enough.

Babies R Us also has inserts that you can put in the diaper to add absorbency.

As soon as my children were sleeping approx 10 hours a night (3 months old) I would put them in a diaper that was one size bigger than the daytime diaper. Size 3 during the day, 4 at night and so on...I never had a problem with them leaking around the legs. I used Huggies (not the overnite ones, just the regular ones) I have also heard of using two diapers at night - use a 4 during the day then a 4 with a 5 on top for night.

Pretty much the exact same circumstance with my guy, who is now 18 mos old...we moved to size 5 about 3 months ago and so,,,,VIOLA! No more leaks since...in either the Huggies Overnites or Pampers Overnites(of which we can only find at Olathe Target so far.....) GOOD LUCK!

FYI, my 18 mo old is just now 26 lbs and he never leaked around legs, etc ...

Hi S.!

I'm not exactly sure what to say about the leaks but I can tell you something to do to help especially if it happens in the middle of the night! One of my co-workers suggested this and it was such a timesaver and so amazing when you're half asleep in the middle of night. Put on a bed protector/lining then your crib sheet and then another bed protector/lining and then another crib sheet. This way if your son does have an accident in the middle of the night, it will help out. Sorry I couldn't help with the issue at hand but hopefully a way to deal with the after effects until you do!

Take care, Latisha

Hi S.,

I had the same problem with my son. We actually ended up going to pampers because they seem to be the only diapers that would hold everything and going up a size and our lives got a lot easier. My son has always been a drinker and had to have his milk before bed no matter what and still does usually have a glass before he actually goes done for the night. We battled it along time and that is what we ended up doing. Now we have him potty trained during the day, but night time I have to use pampers pull-ups because he goes through the huggies. Good Luck!

Try Luvs, they cost less and are great. They worked great for me for overnight, better than pampers and that was all I use to use.

Hi S.,
When my son was having this trouble, we found a great solution. We used the regular diapers, but added a Serenity pad to it. These are the pads they make for adult incontinence - you can find them next to the Depends at pretty much any pharmacy or store like Walmart/Target. It is perfect, they are made to retain urine, fit easily in the diaper, and totally solved the problem for us. Just as with menstrual pads, you can experiment with the right absorbitsy to be sure your kiddo wakes up dry. We always used Serentity, but there are other brands as well. I hope this works for you as well as it did for us!

I agree, we have used one size bigger for well over a year now, for night time. We found that making it sit higher on his tummy helps it from leaking out the legs.
One mother I know uses female sanitary pads in her little one's diaper. The smaller ones of course! It adds extra absorbancy. I have never tried it but heard wonders from this mom.

Don't worry so much about what weight the package says. My boys have never fit in a diaper by their weight, b/c they would have out wet them in no time! Go up to the next size. Huggies overnights are the only overnight diaper that I know of. They worked wonders for my boys!

God bless!
