Diaper Not Lasting All Night

Hi J.,
My daughter has always had the same problem. Not only did I start buying the Huggies night time diaper a size bigger than she normally wore but found diaper doublers at Babies-R-Us. Haven't had a problem since unless the diaper comes undo which I've used duct tape to solve that problem. My daughter also peed alot more if she was too cold at night so she always wears fleece jammies with socks underneath and I keep her room a little warmer.

Hi yep Huggies overnights are great. My son however still had problems with leaks, so I used Huggies overnights and used a diaper doubler. I found them at Safeway and they are just an extra layer of diaper that you put inside the full diaper. they kind of look like the femine pads the hospital gives you after child birth. Sounds wierd but works great!!

I change once or twice in the middle of the night now, and we go right back to sleep. I started doing this after waking up several mornings to many layers of pee-soaked clothing and bedding. We use cloth diapers and my son is 4 mos. We're also doing some "elimination communication," and he seems to be going less in his diaper since we started, and more on the "potty," which is nice.

We had the same problem recently with our 7-month-old son--he was suddenly leaking through diapers at night, waking up soaked. He's in cloth diapers, but our solution was to double-stuff his diaper with an extra layer at night, and it worked like a charm. Now his diaper is soaked when he wakes up in the morning, but his PJs and sheets are dry. I wonder if you could do something similar--like maybe buy a cloth diaper and put it on over the disposable or something? Double-diapering is the only thing that worked for us--we tried several other solutions, and he kept wetting through. Good luck--I hope you find something that works!!

I LOVE Huggies Overnight Diapers. They cost a little more but hold tons. My son pees through everything so I actually buy Safeway's brand of adult Poise pads (for loss of urinary control in adults) and line the Huggies Overnight diaper with it like a sanitary napkin. It gives him that extra absorbancy he needs. I would also try to give less milk in the bottle before bedtime and try to eventually eliminate it becaues the doctor will bug you about it when she turns 1. Good luck!

Have you tried Huggies night time diapers. We had this same problem and then we started using the huggies night time diapers. They work really well. Target sells them, they are in a purple package and have a sleeping mickey mouse on them. You can buy a package of about 60 (2 months worth if you use one a night) for about $19. If you can't find those then you can always double wrap her at night with two regular diapers. Just diaper her like you normally would and then put another diaper on top of that. HTH! Good luck!

My 2 1/2 year old skinny-minny(she only weighs 26#) is still in a size 4 diaper. When she was about 15 months old she started to leak through her diaper. I changed her night time diaper to the Huggies Overnites in a size 4(she was 20# and wore a size 3 diaper then). It has more absorbent material in it so it will hold a lot more fluid! We have great luck with these! No more waking up in the middle of the night for us...hope it works for you too!

I've used Huggies Overnites with all three of my kids. We had the same problem with my oldest daughter. But once I started using these, we haven't had a night-time leak since! And I think they come in size 4. Good luck! D.

Have you tried the Huggies size 4 night time diapers from huggies. That is what I use and it has maybe only leaked a couple times. Good night diapers are for big kids who night time protection. Try Huggies Night diapers, they have size 4!

Whenever we started getting leaks we always switched to the next biggest diapers and that took care of it until my son got into a 6 and started leaking. Since we can go bigger than a 6, I bought a package of G diapers inserts and I put that in the diaper at night to absorb the extra liquid. It has work wonderfully and no more leaks.

What works for us is using one size larger for the night. My daughter is about 25lbs and uses size 4 during the day. At night, we put her in a size 5.

I would suggest using Huggies. They are the only brand that ever worked for me through the night. The cheap diapers are fine for the day though. Good luck.

When my daughter had this problem when she was a new born and I used diaper doubles. They worked great, I found them at Babys R Us. I use to baby sit for a woman who use to put Kotex pads in her sons diapers.

Huggies makes a size 4 nighttime diaper. We were having the same problem with our son. We have used the nighttime diapers for about six months and have only had one leak in all that tims.

They come in a puple package and start at size 4. They have them at Target. We use target diapers for during the day which arte really great but can't hold up to all night.

I highly reccomend the huggies although, it does mean buying two types of diapers.

Get NATURE BABYCARE Diapers. You can order online from diapers.com or get them at Elephant Pharamacy. They might be slightly more expensive than the brand you get now but WELL WORTH IT! They last FOREVER! They are the most absorbent diapers ever and are good for the environment too! Look into them. Good luck.

Huggies Overnites will last through the night. They also have Overnite pull-ups for when she starts potty training.

When I was going through all of that, I finally switched to pampers. That seemed to do the trick about 90% of the time.
I found when I was trying to save money by using all the generic brands, they were not lasting through the night.

We use Huggies Overnights with our twins and that works most of the time, as we were having similar issues. There is also something called Diaper Doublers, which look a bit like sanitary pads without the sticky side - you put those in the diaper for extra absorbency. You can find both products at Babies R Us. I've had trouble finding them elsewhere. We are VERY happy with the Huggies Overnights.

My son was having this problem also (IN the Goodnights!). I just couldnt bare to put him to bed thirsty, (his body needs to hydrate to be set for the next day!) so I haven't cut back on the fluids at night. What I am now doing is getting him up to pee about 2-2 1/2 hours after going down. If I miss my window, he releases his bladder for the first time (which the diaper will hold) but it's the second one (early am)which overflows it. When I take him to the bathroom he doesn't even really wake up. We did talk about it before we started so in case he's a little coherent, he's not scared. I carry him and whisper reassurances in his ear, prop him up and occasionally turn on the water to help trigger. He barely wakes up if at all, and is happy to be back in bed when we're done. If I miss my window and his diaper is already wet, I will often then just change it while still propping him up. We get occasional crying and/or conversation, but neither lasts for long. This has averted the nightly soakings we were experiencing for months. The key is to adjust your timing to catch her BEFORE that first release. Once it becomes routine, it will get easier and easier for both of you. Good luck!

Try the Huggies overnights. They come in size 4.

I had that problem with my daughter too. I found a product called Diaper Doublers that worked a miracle for me. They are an extra pad that you slip inside of the diaper.I don't remember who made it though. Try googling it. If they no longer make them ( it was about 9 yrs ago ) try using a maxi sanitary napkin instead.

Both my boys leak at night! I've reduced the episodes by eliminating fluids after 6pm (they go to bed at 8pm) and I make sure that diapers/pull-ups are put on fresh right before they crawl in bed.

Also, you might want to keep switching brands until you find a diaper that absorbs and fits well at night. For us, Huggies are the worst! But the Kirkland (Costco) brand holds really well. Pampers are somewhere in between. It was all trial and error to figure this out.

Oh, and even though it may seem that the bigger size is way too big, you might try them just at night and see what happens. They'll absorb more liquid, but that's only if they stay put. Worth a try...

Although I switched to cloth diapers, I do have a trick that I use sometimes with a disposable... I use a hemp 'doubler' that is very absorbant, stuffed inside the disposable, and put a small piece of fleece ontop of that. The fleece keeps her bottom real dry, and the hemp will soak up a lot more of the fluid. I just bought 1/2yard of cheap fleece at Joann's and cut them into pieces, and the hemp doublers are online (https://www.momsmilkboutique.com/BGHempDoubler.html, has free shipping) or at Tiny Tots in Campbell. My brother used several papertowels stuffed in his son's diaper; and they even 'stuck' some maxi pads inside once. Some kids just pee a lot at night! Good Luck!

Have you tried huggies? we were having a similar problem but in the day, we used luvs and everything leaked, we then u pampers and they were alittle better but since we changed over to huggies we have had a better success with keeping everything mostly contained. (i've never had much success with target brand)

oh, ive also heard that costco brand-kirkland for diapers works really well too!

I don't know which Pampers you are using, but I found that the Baby Dry was way better than the Cruisers - my son would always wake up too early with the Cruisers. You might want to try double-diapering for a few nights. On the other hand, my son is on the lean side, with a long torso, so we had to have him in the next size, regardless of the weight recommendation. I have noticed that different diaper brands are suited to different baby shapes (and there are so many). If you have friends using different diapers, maybe they can give you a couple to try out at nights before you invest too much money in the wrong brands.
My personal rule of thumb has been to go up a size if there are leaks for three days in a row. My son nursed before before bedtime until he was 17 months old and we never had wet bedding. So I wouldn't consider cutting back her night bottle unless you feel it is absolutely necessary.

Huggies Nighttime diapers are the best.

We had the same problem until I bought Huggies Overnights which I use for my twin 10 month olds who both sleep about 12 hours. They work well. I initially only found them in size 4 (22 - 37 lbs) but just found them at Babies R Us yesterday in size 3 (16 - 28 lbs). Both sizes should fit your little girl.

My daughter is very small for her age, so I've had an issue with diapers leaking in the size where her weight falls as marked on the package. (Did that make sense?) So I would try bigger and bigger sizes of regular diapers, but they still couldn't contain all the liquid at night. Then a friend told me about Huggies Overnights. They are magic and seem to hold everything! (You can tell because in the AM the full diaper weighs almost as much as my daughter!) They have sizes that will fit your daughter -- their size 3 is for 16-25 lbs. Although we went right to Size 4 as I find the bigger sizes still fit a child weighing less and hold more liquid. We found them at our grocery store, but I've since gotten them at Target, and I know diapers.com carries them, too. Hope that helps!

We had the same issue - Pampers usually worked ok for us - Huggies were no good. But I found that Sam's Club brand consistently work good.

I double diaper my son, have since he was born. I put a size 4 on first, then put a size 6 on top of that. If we don't he will be waking up EVERY SINGLE NIGHT just soaked. Try it out!

Hi. I had that problem with my daughter and we now use Huggies night time diapers and it has solved the problem. They have a step 3 diaper which fits babies who are 16lbs to 28lbs.

Huggies overnights were a God send for us. They hold a ton more urine than regular diapers and come in size 4.

We had that problem as well with our daughter. It seemed to happen all of a sudden three nights in a row. I bought the Huggies Nighttime diapers. They did look big on her, but worked great.

Huggies Overnites work well for both of my boys. I know that Huggies Overnites come in sizes 3 and up as my baby is in a 3...Every once in a while it will get soaked through, but rarely.

I used Huggie diapers and pampers baby wipes or if I was at costo I would use the Kirkland baby wipes and I know money is probably tight like it is for everyone some times you have to just bite the bullet costo sells huggies at a really good price and they last longer then the little packages wish you lived closer I would give you what I have I have a child care and Parent give them to me when there kids are out of diapers

Huggies nighttime diapers worked like a charm for us!! Well worth the extra $$ and if you keep your eyes open for coupons, they really help. You can get on the Huggies email list, too, and they'll email or mail you coupons.

Try Huggies Overnights. These are the only diapers that have worked for my 2 year old twin girls. They started soaking thru about 1 1/2 years old and I have had good luck with the Overnights. They are in a purple package and they have smaller sizes than the Goodnites diapers. Not all stores carry them and in the smaller sizes. Nob Hill stores and Rite Aid locations usually have them. To find stores in your area, go to www.huggieshappybaby.com. Find the diapers section, find overnites and it will show you the locations that carry the overnites. Good luck and hope that helps!

We had the same problem until we started using the Huggies Overnites, they are diapers, not pull ups and I know they have them in size 4 at my local Safeway. Leaking through diapers was also always a sign to us that it was time for the next size up, regardless of the weight limits on the packages.

Hi J.! I had the same problem with Pampers until I switched to Huggies Supreme. I would nurse my daughter in the middle of the night and then change her diaper in the morning. The diaper would be extremely full but not leak after 12 hours. When I stopped feeding her in the middle of the night, the diaper still did not leak. I hope Huggies works for you! Good luck!

Huggies has an overnight diaper that works great for my son. They are not pull-ups. I live in Brentwood and the only place that I have been able to find them is at the Target. My son started using them when he was in size 4 (he's in 5 now). We've been using them for about 6 months or so and they've not leaked on us yet!

We use Huggies Nighttime diapers. They come in smaller sizes. It stopped our leaking problems at night completely. Available at Target and even Safeway.

We had the same problem with our oldest... he went through a stage where he kept peeing through his diaper. Try diaper liners... they look like long maxi pads... put it in the diaper before she goes to bed... it will soak up more liquid than the diaper alone. It worked for us - and he only needed them for a few months. Good luck!

We had the same problem with my son. We found the Target diapers to leak horribly. In fact we like the Costco brand (Kirkland) the best. Anyhow, Huggies makes a nighttime diaper that works well for us, and we usually buy the next size up according to weight on the package. Doesn't matter if they look big, they hold more liquid! Just make sure they're tight around the legs.

Also we did end up weaning him off the nighttime bottle around your daughter's age and put him in the nighttime diaper right before bed. Good luck!

I too had the same problem with my son. I tried every kind of diaper but he was always soaked. So, here is what I did: I bought the Depends men guards (like a maxi pad) put one inside his diaper and put a pair of plastic diaper pants over. Although his diaper was full, his clothes and bed were dry. What a relief to not have to change the sheets daily.
Also, I cut back on the amount of liquid going in before bedtime.

We used Huggies night time diapers with great success. We also cut down on the milk/fluid consumption for about an hour before bed time. I have heard that for kids who are too small for night time diapers, using 2 regular diapers, with the one closest to the skin cut to allow urine to leak through to the second diaper works. I never tried this, so I can't vouch for its success. Good luck!

Sometimes the trick is just to up the size of the diaper. I also put the plastic pants (intended to use with cloth diapers) over my son's diaper at night and that usually keeps the wetness contained. Good luck!

Both of our boys had/have this problem and overnight diapers were still not enough. We use "Diaper Doublers" (made by Paragon), which I cannot usually find in stores. I order them on-line (but you have to get a whole case.) There are smaller quantities listed on ebay right now, if you want to give it a try first.

Moving the last bottle up to an hour before bedtime will help too. You could try transitioning the milk to a cup with dinner... But if that last bottle is part of her current bedtime routine, she will probably resist. Perhaps wait until you are ready to give up bottles for good and then go cold turkey - no milk right before bed.

My daughter, 2yrs old, had the same problem and I bought her the nighttime diapers and they work great! They seem big, but they're adjustible on the sides. She has a bottle at night, too. And I stopped giving her her sippy cup around 6:00 in the evening. They really do make a huge difference.

My son has that problem too! We started trippling him up with a diaper, cotton underpants and plastic pants. This seems to keep him dry until we all wake up.

As for drinks before bed time, we offer our son some water if he wants anything and he will typically just take a few sips from a cup (he's been on a cup since 12 months).

a friend of mine uses double diapers for her son and that seems to work. I on the other hand use the Huggie night time diapers and i buy them one size bigger. I know that may sound like they would be too big but they are really not, and they totally work. Let us know what ends up working for you

We had the same problem with my son primarily who needed a diaper at night till he was 4! He just could not wake up to go to the bathroom.

Our solution only works if your daughter is a fairly sound sleeper.

My son used to go to bed around 8.00 pm. My husband or I would then check him just before we went to bed (11.00 ish) and then gently change him while he was asleep if he needed it! If he didn't, we let him alone and risked it.

We were surprised how well this worked. My daughter was a much lighter sleeper and even she was able to deal with this too. Sometimes just waking a bit and rolling over and going off again. You may be surprised how "asleep" she stays.

We never had any luck with bigger diapers or different kinds.

It may be worth a try...

I think Huggies makes an 'overnight' size 4 diaper, and try Diaper Doublers (only place I've found them is Babies R Us).
We used to have the same problem with our son, this fixed.
Too, try to slowly cut back the amount of milk she drinks before bed (do 5 oz for a few days, then 4... maybe she'd be fine with just a couple ounces eventually as her bedtime signal).

Don't give anything to drink after dinner. My kids can't have anything to drink after dinner, which is about 2 1/2 hours before their bedtime. That is enough time for the fluids to pass through their system and pee before bedtime. I realize your daughter is only one now and can't pee on her own. Start reducing her fluids to 4 oz. for four days, then 3 oz. for three days, then two oz. for two days, then one oz. for one day and that's it. Do the count down with her and explain it to her that she only gets "this much" to drink before bed and soon she will just read a book instead of drinking. These methods often worked with me. I only read a couple of posts, but wanted to let you know that the Huggies Overnights have been working for us the past couple of weeks. My son (almost 15 months)has only wet through once. I also have cut back on his water intake in the afternoon/evening. He used to drink 2 sippy cups throughout the afternoon and now I have cut that back and try to get him to drink more throughout the whole day. That has seemed to help us:) Good luck with it!

Huggies makes an overnight diaper in size 4. These have worked well for us until the past week or so and even these are soaking through for us. My neighbors moved up to the size 5's even though their son is still technically a size 4 and have been having more luck. Since they are sleeping the diapers should stay up well enough. We have tried going down to 4 oz. before bed and that has helped but we have still had some leaks but not as many. Good luck!

Sorry if repetitive, didn't read all your advice... I put my daughter in Huggies overnights, she also pees like a fountain all night and most nights she's fine. (12 hrs sleeping, + another hour playing) I would taper off her liquid before bedtime so she gets the routine but not as much liquid....-H

VONS/Safeway carries a brand called Mom-to-Mom, and they make an overnight diaper that is great!

I don't know if this has been mentioned, because I couldn't take the time to read all 57 responses. :)

That happened to my son who was around 16-17 months. He also drinks 8oz of milk before bedtime. Just before he goes to bed, we would change his diaper to the next size (pampers size 5). It helped and he has never had a wet PJs ever since. He weighs 23 lbs. Hope this helps.

I agree with the diaper doublers advice. My older daughter needed them around 18 months - 2 years. They kind of look like those awful giant maxi-pads that they gave you in the hospital when you had the baby, but they really work well to keep the baby and pajamas, sheets, etc, dry through the night. It worked for us. We used Pampers Cruisers and had pretty good luck with those not leaking out of the legs or anything.

I agree about trying the Huggies overnight diapers. These work awesome!!! I started my son in a size 4 and now he's in a size 5. He is only 22 lbs too, but the size 5 work. They are big, but not too big. Target carries these. Best of luck!!!

I am having the same problem. Both my kids, have this happen. My sons room smells every day because he leaks at night. Even with a night change. I am trying to diaper cover that I got today, and hoping that helps.
You can try it too.

We use the Costco brand (Kirkland) and love them! They really old the moisture. My daughter is 16 months old and sleeps 12 hours and these diapers do not leak. I make sure she is changed just before she is ready to go to sleep and we have not had any problems.
I would suggest trying them. The cost is $35.99 for 184 diapers. Great buy! The Costco brand wipes are great, too.

Probably just echoing what other moms already suggested. Huggies Overnight. My daughter has been wearing Pampers size 3 until her diaper started leaking both daytime and overnight. Even though Pampers was the brand that fit her best since baby till that time, somehow it didn't seem to work anymore for her. Size 4 Pampers was too big. I switched to Huggies size 4 because they run smaller. For nighttime she still leaked, so we decided to try Huggies Overnight size 4, and it worked magic. No more wet pajamas.
