Needing Some Advice

I was to have started my period on May 11th and still haven't started as of May 18th. I have taken two home pregnancy tests and both came out negative. However, I have been feeling a little nauseated and have gotten sick one morning. Should I go to the doctor or wait a while to see if it will come?

What can I do next?

It generally takes 6 weeks for a positive test if you are pregnant. I knew that I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter within two weeks of conception. I know my body and how I was feeling. I took 5 pregnancy tests before I got a positive. No I know that for some people they can tell the first time with a test. Unfortunately for me it took 6 weeks. You may be like me. I was told at planned parenthood when I took my final two test that it doesn't show up on a test for most people until they are atleast 6 weeks along. So my advice is wait a couple of weeks and take another one.. Then you could also get a blood test to see. But waiting may be the easiest way. That's what I did because like I told my husband for 6 weeks I just knew it..

That is only 7 days late. Just wait and give it time before you take another test. It could be that you aren't far enough along for the tests to show positive AND it could be that you aren't even pregnant and just a little late this month. Give it a little time.

W/my first pregnancy, I didn't get a positive result until 4 days late, and that was so faint that I retested the next day. That was negative! Then I tested two days after that (7 days after I was supposed to have started), and it was finally a good, strong positive.

Home pregnancy tests measure the amount of HCG in your urine, which is typically the most concentrated in the morning (after a full night's sleep and little or no water for many hours). If you drink a lot of water, that will dilute your urine, including the HCG in it, even if you test first thing in the morning (which is what happened to me with the negative pregnancy test above).

There are some things that may cause you to miss a period, besides being pregnant, which is why it is recommended that you see a doctor -- to rule those other things out. However, they can do a blood test, which will pick up on smaller amounts of HCG than the urine test can, and it won't be diluted. Most likely you are pregnant, so going to the doctor can confirm that; but if you're not, then you may need to see why you haven't started yet.

Late ovulation and stress are two things that may cause a late period, but there are some medical things as well, and those should be ruled out, if you're not pregnant.

Hi Allyssa,
I was having the same problem a couple of months ago (only I was going through pregnancy tests like they were going out of style!!) If you are concerned, please talk to your ob/gyn. But here's what I know - your period isn't considered missed until 40 days since the first day of your last period. If this happens then either you didn't ovulate (need to go to your doctor to figure out why) or you are pregnant and perhaps the pregnancy tests aren't working for some reason (there is some degree of error associated with them). Best of luck to you!

I would recommend going to the Dr. I didn't test positive on the home pregnancy tests until more than a week late. Come to find out, I tend to have low levels of hormones at the start of my pregnancy. In fact, I almost lost my 2nd child due to the low hormone levels, but they were able to give me some progesterone depositories to up my levels. Who knows what would have happened had I not gone in. So, please do go to the doctor as soon as possible.

You may already know this (sorry if you do), but are you testing first thing in the morning. I tested positive REALLY early...like at my 4th week, but testing was the first thing I would do in the morning when I woke up. Good luck!!

Also, there was one time when I stopped having periods for like 3 to 4 months when I was a teenager. Turns out I had a big ovarian cyst they found via ultrasound. It had stopped my periods. I had to go on some type of medication to shrink the cyst and restart my period. The cyst also made me feel nauseated.

Good luck on you being pregnant!!

I'd wait one more week before going to the doctor. It could be that you ovulated late and your period will come. It could be that you ovulated late, you are pregnant, but you just don't have enough hormones flowing yet to get a positive home test. It could be late implantation. It could be a chemical pregnancy. There are so many possibilities. You could always give your OB's office a call and see what they recommend you do.

Hi Allyssa
I know you have gotten a lot of responses but I just wanted to share my experience with my son. When I was pregnant with Jaedyn I NEVER showed up on a home test. I had this gut feeling I was pregnant but even blood tests done by the doctor came back negative until I was 7 weeks late! I was on the pill when I got pregnant with my son so I am guessing that probably had something to do with it. To make the pregnancy even stranger... when my water broke and the hospital did the little 'paper' test to verify that it had for sure broken it didn't show up as amniotic fluid. I guess it has something to do with the Ph levels in my body. With my daughter I got a very faint plus sign on a home test but did show up when the doctor tested me. Best of luck!!

When I was pregnant with my first daughter I took 5 home pregnancy test and they all came back negative. If you are pregnant you might not have enough hormone yet to make the test postitive. If I were you I would call my doctor and explain to them what is going on and ask them to do a blood test. The blood test will tell you. Good luck and congrats if you are!

My first two tests when I was pregnant with my daughter were negative also. I would wait a few days and take another if it still doesn't start, then call the doc. It may be nothing, since a week isn't completely uncommon. Good luck!

Going to a doctor never hurts. I have never had regular periods...sometimes I miss a whole month. If the tests come up negative then they are probably right. I would try to do some activities that might bring your period on. If you really are worried then call your doctor and ask their advice.

This same thing happened to me. I just wait a couple of weeks and took another one and it was positive. I don't know why it didn't show up on the first two, but as soon as I thought "it has to be stress" and waited, sure enough the next time it was positive. I would just give it a little while and do another test. If you really need to know right now you could always go to the doctor and have a blood test.

Some doctors may do a blood test right now, but most make you miss 2 cycles before they will test you. However, if you weren't trying to get pregnant and are still taking pills, I would stress this to the doctor. They may do one at that point.

It may be too early to tell with the home pregnancy test. YOu could call your dr and get a blood test they are very sensitive.

Hey Allyssa, I was told that you can have negative pregnancy tests, so if I were you I would call the doctor and make an appt. just for some piece of mind. It sounds to me like you could be pregnant. I hope everything works out. Good luck. J. A.

HI Allyssa! Since you are only 1 week late, I would wait a week and repeat the test. You may be pregnant but too early for the test to detect.

Allyssa,
I would wait to see the doctor. If you are, you are. If your not, your not. The doctor wont even see you til your at least 11 weeks (or you think) anyway. At least mine never would make the appt. until after that "milestone" for whatever reason. It is possible to get a false negative it your pretty early on. It is also possible to have a late period like I did last month (which I never do).
Good luck!

If a doctor visit won't cost you much time or money, why not go. Especially if you are anxious (and you must be to come here). In my area, we have two local hospitals that offer free pregnancy tests. And anonymous. And no wait. But it's the urine test, not a blood test. So I don't know how much more accurate it will be than the ones you can buy at the drugstore. You can always call the labs at your local hospitals and see if they also offer this service.

Hmm...when did you last take a test? If it was more than a couple of days ago I would go ahead and test again. When I got pregnant I tested on Sunday and it was negative. Well, when I tested again on Tuesday it was positive. If you are trying to get pregnant and testing a lot I would suggest getting your tests from the dollar store-same test less fancy packaging. Good Luck!

Most of the time a doctor will not do a test until you are two weeks late or have had a positive home test. I know that it is hard to wait when something like this comes up because it is such a potential life changer, but why go to the doctor too early and have to go back again later anyway. I'd wait another week and think about what you would do in either outcome to prepare for what the doctor may tell you.

Hi Allysa,

Is there anything new going on in your life right now (ie, major stressors, changes in sleep, diet, exercise)? Those factors could contribute to your cycle starting late. Are your cycles normally regular? Are you still feeling nauseated? I would wait a few days to see what happens and if you're still late, I'd take another test before scheduling an appointment.

Good luck,
J.

Allyssa, I am currently 27 weeks pregnant with our second child. My last period was November 4, 2007, but I did not test positive until December 19. I had many symptoms that I had when I was pregnant with my son and I KNEW I was pregnant, I just knew it. I thought I was going crazy because I started avoiding alcohol (hard to do at holiday parties when people know you usually drink)and treating myself like I was pregnant even though I was testing negative. It turned out I ovulated two weeks after I should have, so the baby wasn't conceived until the end of November. By my period, she should have been due August 10, but by ultrasound, she is due August 23. So anyway, my point is, as nerve-racking as it is, you will probably have to wait a few more weeks to see if your period comes or not, but there is still a definate chance that you are!!

Wait another week and then call the doctor if the test are still negative and your period hasn't shown up. Has there been any major changes in your lifestyle or diet? Is there alot of stress going on in your life right now? I went almost 3 months without one because I was under a lot of stress during that time period. (Hehe, there's a post from me somewhere asking if I could be too!)

Good Morning Alyssa,

IMO,

If you are insured go see your Dr. it really is never too soon to KNOW so that you can start being mindful if you are.
And, if you are uninsured, I guess that you could wait a bit.
But, I would like to point this out. There have been women that CONTINUED their period even though they WERE pregnant. If that can happen, then missing a period or having it be late and having it be an indication of pregnancy even though a home test says your not, can certainly happen. Home tests will never be as accurate as a blood test.
If your cycle is pretty regular and your last pregnancy went the normal route, then if I were you, I would certainly have it checked out. Your body is telling you something for sure.

Good luck,
B.

P.S. Whatever you are wishing for the answer to be, I hope you get!
