I know how you feel. Growing up with the name J. wasn't any better. I personally have always liked Irish and Celtic names such as Aiden and Rhiannon. I ended up going with very common family names for both of my boys. However, if they had been girls I had much different names picked out: Jimi Brianne and Pagan Celeste.

I know how you feel but in the opposite. My first name is Y. (sounding like Evon) i hated being the only person in my whole school with that name. And i hated correcting everyone on the way it was pronounced. though i have found that in the east my name is a bit more heard of. though i happened to be raised in California, it made it tuff having everyone say it wrong. Once the teachers knew it that was fine but when you got subsitute teachers you were correcting them. Make sure that the name you do pick looks like how you would spell it. otherwise your child may feel like i did in school.
hope this helps.

Some of my favorites were McKenna and Nevin for a girl and Gannon and Grayson for a boy. Oddly enough all of these names are last names- but work well for unique first names. Play with it and have fun!

Hi! My name is D. so I understand about your name being A..When I had my 1st daughter I felt the same way as you did so I decided to go with Irish names seeing that my husband is Irish. My 1st daughter is Reilly and my 2nd daughter is Jillian.Maybe you can look into something like that, beside I love your children's names. It seems like you did good with theirs they are different so I am sure what ever you decide on will be great.

You have already a ton of suggestions, but since I am obsessed with baby names I'll add my two cents in. My sons name is Hunter. I too like unique names, but my husband does not. I suggested a ton of names I liked, but they got quickly turned down. Keegan was actually on my list. So here are a few I like.

Boys- Landon, Jackson, Bryson

Girls- McKenna Riley, Cheyenne, Jordyn, Destiny, Kennedy Paige, Brenna

My husband and I had the same problem when we were pregnant. We didn't want a common name that everyone else had, but we didn't want her to have to spell it all the time either, since she will have to spell her last name. I'm a fan of "normal" names, not made up ones, but I like ones that people have heard of but don't know anyone with that name. We named our daughter Greta Kathryn. There are a few Greta's out there, but it isn't a common name, and she still won't have to spell it very often. Everyone thinks it is such a cute name, but it will grow with her. A lot of the older names are back in right now, but there are still a ton of older names that aren't overused yet. For instance, my friend just had a girl and named her Elsie, and another friend has a daughter named Mara.
My favorite boys names are Isaac, Josiah, Micah, and Alex. A variation on Alex is Xander or Zander, which is cute and kind of different.

My advice- go to Barnes and Noble, grab a bunch of baby name books, and find a comfy chair. Write down every name that even remotely appeals to you. We didn't have Greta's name until she was over 24 hours old, but it totally suits her. Good luck- it's a hard decision!

Good Morning A. H.-

While I understand you wanting a different name for your child, I must say choose wisely. My name is very different and I went through a lot of grief as a child because of it. I must also say that now as an adult I love my name and wouldn't change it but those days of harrassment still ring in my ears.

I reccommend that you look into you and your husband's family trees.I was named after an Aunt that was living overseas, my mom missed her so much that she named me G. after her. My younger sister is named Leelen, my folks took my two grandmother's name and put them together. (Onlee = Lee and Helen = len.) She always told us she took the Onry out of Onlee and the Hell out of Helen to get her name:) Maybe a good old fashion name will pop up. Or maybe naming your child after an author of your favorite book, song or poem. My son Laurence is named for the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Also many of my friends named their kids after the time of year, day of week or even month the child was born in. (Autum, Tuesday, June and April) Maybe try looking into your ethnic back ground and try an ethnic name.

I think that trying to name your child can be difficult, but I found the process to be really fun. I brought a list of names with me to the hospital. I wanted a name that fit my baby, so I waited until I could see his face. when I first held him i knew instantly what his name would be, and it wasn't even a name on the list:) crazy, but true. My boyfriend had been reading me poetry by Paul Laurence Dunbar, so he picked the name Laurence. When I looked at my son I could see my brother that had passed away , so i chose Andrew. We then flipped a coin to see which name would come first, and Laurence Andrew it was. I can't see him being anything else and it was amazingly easy.

Have fun making lists, my cousin made a game of it at her baby shower. Her last name is Whan, names like First Whan, and Obi Whan were coming around, it was silly but themn her best friend said Lindsey Whan and that was the name that stuck.

While I am not pregnant right now, I already have a list of names that i like : Levi or Zebulon, Rowan, and August for boys and Eartha, Oceanania, Rubylee,Esther, and Kisabeth for girls. Knowing me though I will probably won't use any of these names and have something totally different come out when the next child is born.

I wish you health and happiness during the rest of your pregnancy and a smooth delivery. Whatever name you choose i am sure it will be the right one.

Goodluck!

Peace and Light,
G.

Hi, A..

You might want to check out these websites for ideas... go to http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ for a list of the most popular names in the last few years. This way, you'll get an idea of what other people are naming their kids and you can avoid these names.

Another site to check out is www.babynames.com. You can look up all kinds of names and their meanings, history, etc., along with a forum for discussing with other parents.

Good luck to you! And have fun! I have a girl and a boy whose names are different enough to be original, but not so different that the names are considered weird.

My name is also A.. I totally know what you mean!Unfortunately, my kids have fairly popular names. My daughter is named Kathleen (Katy), after my mom who was killed while I was newly pregnant with my daughter. My son is Ethan. My husband doesn't like unusual names. Also, I teach and the more "unusual" a name is the more popular they are becoming in the classroom. Reading through your kids' names and the responses, I can think of at least four other kids with those same names....but it's better than the 20 I can think of with some form of Katy!!! LOL! It really is a tough battle.

If I had another boy, I'd love to name him Ezra Thomas. Some people act like that is the worst name in the world, but I had a student with that name, and I loved hearing it and saying it. Obviously, you'll find something that works for you.

Other suggestions, Lydia, Elita, Janie, Arden, for girls.
My cousin named her son Lane, which I personally think is a little feminine, but still a nice name. I also like Nolan for a boy. Good luck!

I agree A., it's always nice to have a different and unique name. I have an 11 month old and her name is Stevie Nicole. We named her after my brother who passed away. Alot of people ask if it's really Stephanie, NO, it's Stevie. I was just at the Dr. office w/my daughter yesterday and the dr. just had a baby and they named her Lanna Marie. I thought that was pretty. I also liked Lela (lala Long A). I liked the name Ashley which is kinda popular but I wanted to spell it Ashleigh. However if you spell your childs name differently no one will ever spell it correctly so you have to watch that. My sons name is Trent. I've only ever seen 1 or 2 boys named that. There's a little girl at the gym who plays w/Stevie and her name is Emerson.

Hope that was helpful! Oh, and everyone thinks we named Stevie after Stevie Nicks! NOT! LOL!

Hi A.. Like you I wanted my children to have names that wouldn't be repeated 3 or more times when the teacher does the roll call. I had 2 other T.'s in my class and another family member by the same name. I was determined not to repeat the same eye rolling headaches with my kids. I found a baby name book at an antique store that was published in the early 1800's. I have somehow misplaced the book, but thankfully had it long enough to name both of my children. My daughter is Emory. It's traditionally a male name, it's rooted in German and means "Active leader" and that she truely is. My son's name is Brayden, which I believe is English and means "Brave." The book had thousands of wonderful and unique names that you never hear today but aren't so far fetched that they'd raise too many moments for a child to be picked on by the mean kids at school. I don't know how many name books there are laying around antique stores but I'm sure using the internet you could find older names or unique names by search engines. Good luck and have fun!

I liked these girl names; Brookelyn, Eliana, Lisbeth. Adara, Hanley, Sage and Ramey. For boys Paxton, Sebastian, Taryn, Trase, and Walker.

WE had planned on naming our little girl Audrey or Rebecca, but wound up naming her Claire. The others names just didn't fit once she got here. Our son's name is Benjamin. My husband wanted both of them named something that wasn't too "trendy" so that they were more original at school. I've always loved the name Lauren for a girl & Spencer or Christian for a boy. Those were all too trendy for husband. But, I'm very happy with the names we have.

Hi A.:
Check this out: http://babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html
It's the coolest site. Just type in some names you like and it will tell you the trends for the last 100 years. Our daughter's name is Sydney and I thought it was interesting that it was a boys name until the 1940s, then it slowly gained in popularity as a girl's name through 2006, but it's still not off the charts.

I also like names that are symbolic to events that have happened in my life. My husband and me had the good fortune to go to Australia a few years ago, and after a five week trip, we ran out of money in Sydney, but still had the time of our lives. We figured life would be very similar with a baby -- broke but still having fun! :)
Good luck on your fourth! Wow! Take care...

I think that naming your child is one of the most stressful parts of your pregnancy. I work at a University in Ohio and look at transcripts everyday and see the same names everyday. I wanted to name my daughter something that you just don't see and so I went with Faith. Which I love. But if she was a boy I was going to go with either August (after my Grandpa) or Dane. You can search online or in my case, I hadn't even thought about Faith until I was at the Dr's office and read an article on Faith Hill and thought I like that and you don't hear it. Good Luck with a finding a name for your baby, looks like you have plenty of time to decide!

I know this is proubly what you have heard alot, but go out and buy one of them babyname books. Just a cheap little one you find at the local store and go threw it very closely and with an open mind. If you find a name you think you are realy liking,go outside and say it like 3times out loud. Hearing it like that will give you some perspective. Also try and look at the meaning of the names. That helps to find a name w/ some meaning to you and your partner. I also would not limit myself to just one name for each sex. I know most people dont think that way,but if you want to be open about names keep in mind 2or3 that you like. When you see your baby for the first time the names you are considering, well the right one will just fit her(or him)I did that w/ all 3 of my kids and to this day I have no regrets about the names I chose. Good Luck! p.s. I also like the name Emerson for a girl and would call her Emie for short. My 5yr. old daughter's name is Ashlynn its irish and means " to dream" just alittle note....

-Something that doesn't make a cruel set of initials (A. Suzanne Smith)

We also really liked biblical names that are not really names: Eden, Sheba, Cairo. For our second son we hit the international names on the internet (His name is Welsh).
