Hi Moms! My son finally has a few teeth and he is good at feeding himself so I feel I should be feeding him more real food and less baby food but I am not a good cook and so I need some help with ideas/recipes please! Also, how much do feed your baby at this age? He eats cut up fruit and some veggies but I still will give him the jar food with it. I think my son will eat more than he needs if I let him. He is 23lbs and has always been excited to eat so I need help to male sure I do not over feed him. What are you other mom's feeding your 10 month olds? My son also still has five 6 ounce bottles of formula a day as well. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Go borrow these books from your local library, they can do inner-library loan if they don't have them on hand.

You can try them on for size and see how they fit with your families tastes and lifestyle. I borrowed them so many times my hubby finally bought them for me for Mothers Day.

Feed Formula first then offer foods, most of his much needed vitamins and nutrients are supplied by the formula for at least the next month or so. Then as he weans off formula he will be ready to increase his food intake.

Also, nutritionist Ellyn Satter's book "Child of Mine: feeding with Love and Good Sense" is a helpful reference and very reassuring with our worries about feeding our kids right - one of her big phrases is "Your child knows how to eat and grow" and at his age, unless your pediatrician has shown any cause for concern, chances are good that he's eating because his body needs it.

As long as it's small enough/soft enough for him to handle and NOT a choking hazard, you can give him whatever you like!

A child will never "eat too much" so you should not really try to "limit" his food. We're all born that way--we naturally stop eating when we're full and no longer hungry--we just don't STAY that way! LOL

He can eat soft cheeses, crackers, Cheerios (with or without milk) soft cooked cut-small veggies (sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, etc) fruits cut small (bananas, peaches, etc.) grains (rice, noodles, etc.) and very small, very tender meats.....

Wow he's a big boy. My 18 month old weighs 22 lbs. Not that it matters. There is a little boy that lives next door that is 3 months younger than my daughter and he dwarfs her in comparison to size.

Here are a few fun ideas that my daughter loved around that age:

I'd scramble a egg and cook it into a solid patty on a frying pan and lit her use her hand to eat it. Maybe at his age you might want to brake it into small finger food size so he doesn't choke.

Yogurt with applesauce mixed in. or other mashed fruit.

Cottage cheese with fruit.

Oh and the thing I love to do the most is all fruit and vegetable smoothies. I make these for my 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 yr olds and they love them. And I know that they are getting lots of good vitamins in them. As my 3 yr old got older i made them thicker. But for my little one that needs a sippy cup I used these recipes so they were thin enough for a sippy cup. I did find that i had to remove the leak proof insert on the cups so that they could get the juice better.

Try these:

I can't believe this is good for me smoothie
2 ripe mangoes, peeled
1 ripe peach
8 leaves of romaine lettuce
2-3 cups of water

Basic Balance
1 ripe mango, peeled
1 cup kale
1 cup water

Baby Love
2 bananas
1 pear
1 cup Kale
1/2 cup water

My First Green Smoothie
1 banana
1/2 apple
1 cup spinach
1-2 cups water

My kids love smoothies. We make them every day. Have fun.
