There are different types of therapy. My son did cognitive behavior therapy for his adhd, and it did help him. Also, in 2nd grade the psychologist did a program similiar to Play Attention, which you can google, which helps teach the brain how to focus. It was fun and you could see the difference in my son's IVA scores from before and after the program. The IVA helps to measure the amount of inattentiveness and impulsivity a person has.

His brain most probably learns differently from the average student, and he needs a teaching style that addresses that difference. I have my son work in spurts rather than one long sit down session. He needs to take breaks, come back and work, then break again if needed. That keeps his blood flowing to his brain, and helps to keep him able to focus.

If you live close to Mcallen, TX see Dr. W. Bieker. This could be due to eye problems, which lead to learning disabilities. My son had the same problem and after many doctors, counslers, phyciatrst, neurologist, and Stratera Dr. Bieker was the only one who gave us a solution what actually worked. He had problems with his eyes and sent him for some excersises (some schools even have a computer program for their students). My son was about 9 when we saw him and in now a teenager doing progressively better. I can tell when he has not done these excersises easily, his speech, hearing, and thinking improved weeks after doing these, and was noticeable.

I can't tell you enough how this has improved my child's life it was had at first because he could not focus and the excersices were hard for him (trace a line with one curve and it took him one week to do it correctly).

My nephew has eye problems and has researched this and told me that this leads to learning disablities.

My husband has problems focusing as well, and my daughter. She is diagnosed with adhd like my son. She does extremely well in school and has no eye problems. Both kids are very active in sports - baseball/softball being number 1.

GOOD LUCK1

I am sorry to see there are no responses to this question. I have the same problem and my son is 9 now and in the 4th grade. He has not been diagnosed with ADHD. He is just not interested in school, reading or learning. I have to reward him with an activity if he "gets it." Then he "gets it." He just does not see the importance of school right now. I just wish we could get him to learn books like he learns skills. Good luck and I look forward to seeing some answers to the problem.

i use time4learning.com for my son as a homeschool curriculum - he can stay focused with it because it is like a game, they dont realize they are learning.
i homeschool full time because my son would not do well in a school classroom setting - he is very distractable, and is viewed as a touble maker because he cant sit still.
i dont wish to medicate him thoug and instead control his behavior with cutting out all additives in foods, and a lot of patience!
my hubbie also has adult adhd, and it is a definate inherited thing.
try the site though its only $20 a month

Hopefully you are seeing a psychiatrist about this than just his pediatrician. Meds didn't seem to work for my daughter either and as time went on, we learned she was bipolar. Bipolar has ALOT of the same symptoms as ADHD. The meds she takes now actually help her. The meds she was on for ADHD didn't help at all and actually made some of her symptoms worse. She can concentrate better now and isn't so anxious all the time. It is hereditary, so if anyone in your family on either side has this disorder, you need to tell his doctor. Good Luck!

My son was about that age when he was diagnosed. He is 11 now and we seem to have his meds down fairly well for now but it is a constant struggle to keep him on the right medication and right dosage. We had the same problem with our son not being interested. He still has that issue but we have found that he is also very intelligent. You may want to talk to the councelors at school and see about him taking the Horizons testing for gifted (GT) students. This might take care of him being bored all of the time. I used to think that if my son was so smart, he would finish his work in record time and be looking for more. I found out the hard way that in boys especially, they just drag their feet and don't do anything.

Hi A.,
First - Look on the CHADD web site - there are special groups for parents who have children with ADHD.

Next - get to know your school coulseor - He/She can hook you up with all kinds of resources.

I also recommend the book "The ADD answer" which suggests many food modifications and other things that dont include medication. Hyperactivity is just one componant of the disorder - the attention deficit is hard to get a handle on.

Last - get yourself a good parenting class. Parenting with Love & Logic is a great one (I think there is a class starting up at Westwood highschool in the next few weeks). In the mean time, buy "Magic 1-2-3" its a great parenting book, easy read and concret Ideas for working with children.

On your p.s. - it does run in families.....
Keep trying - it sometimes takes a while to get the right meds.
