So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses.

I called the doctor yesterday. My daughter does not have any other symptoms except congestion. Dr. put her on Dimetapp 3 times a day, and cool humidifier at nights. She asked me to try this for 2 days, or she will see her then.

I do suggest taking her to the doctor especially after a week. Humidifiers are great, a steamy shower with the bathroom door closed works great especially when you put in the shower the Sudacare tablets that release a menthal aroma that does make breathing easier. If the nose is congested, try "Little Noses" A saline gel for littles ones that really do help little congested noses. It is also completely safe. I have had doctors recommend the saline gel.

Glad you're going to the doc if it doesn't clear up. The same thing happened with my son but he was a very little around 5 months, and I didn't like that congestion sound in his lungs. So I took him to the ER and he was diagnosed with Bronchialitis (sp) and doctor put him on Albuterol. He got pretty sick and I think he was borderline RSV. Now my daugther gets the same thing. I don't know if the doctor told you but in the words that a medical professional told me "if she's breathing very fast, like a breath a second, get thee to an ER." Good luck

I use Arbonne's herbal vapor rub whenever my daughter is starting a cold. It works wonders.

Colds are very common. As long as she is acting fine and doesn't have a fever, you can try treating it at home using a humidifier. If you don't have one then you can turn on the shower to get some steam and sit with her in the bathroom for about 20 minutes. Also have her blow her nose as much as possible. If she can't blow her nose then suction it out. That should help with the congestion in her chest. And make sure she's drinking plenty of fluids. If the cold lasts longer than 10 days or if she starts getting worse or develops a fever then I would definitely have her seen by her doc.

This is gross, but if she has green phlem coming out of her nose, or when she coughs, she should definitely go to the doctor (sign of infection.) There was a recent recall on children's cold medications, so please check into that before you give her anything over-the-counter.

I recently read that if you're coughing so much that you can't sleep, you can try putting some Vick's VaporRub on your feet, then put socks on. Supposedly, it helps stop coughing for some strange reason. I'm not saying this is a "cure," just another way to treat the symptoms, so she can sleep better while she has a cough.

Give her a probiotic made for babies/toddlers. I use Primadophilus. The doctor told me to double up on the dosage when he was taking a strong antibiotic. When he got better, I just kept him on it, and he has never had a diaper rash since. You can find them in the refrigerated section at Henry's, Mother's Market or any whole foods stores. It comes in powder and liquid form. Hope this helps!

Hi S.,

If your child is not getting any better and you hear congestion in her chest, (also listen to her back near the bottom of the lungs)and is running even a slight temp you should probably have her checked by your Doctor.

Hello!

With all of the changing weather conditions, we're all affected by this wheezing, which occurs with inflamation of the lung passageways. If you have a steam shower, and some advil, that may help along with some vic's vapor rub for relief. We needed to get to Dr. Lavin's office because it worsened for my son with his chronic coughing and headache! Dr. put him on an inhalent in his office and we needed to put him on Zithromax plus advair inhaler for a few days...He is feeling better! You need to make sure that it doesn't turn into Pneumonia or some other bacterial infection. Also, you may want to try Clariton D..NON drowsey!

Hi S., I would take her to the doctor. Also I don't know if you have a vaporizer, that helps when they first star with chest congestion. I have two daughters and when either of them is catching a cold I leave it on all night. Good luck and I hope she feels better...

Sounds to me like you need to take her to an MD. She may need something to get that phlegm (spelling?) out. You know fluid in the lungs can progress to pneumonia so don't wait a lot longer. L.

Um, that could be pneumonia, especially if she has a fever. My daughter had those exact symptoms, a cough that just hung on for weeks. One chest x-ray later, pneumonia. Any time you wonder, "Should I take her to the doctor?" you should take her to the doctor.

Using a cool mist humidifier really helps my son with any cold symptoms. I also take him in the bathroom with me while the shower is running hot water so the steam can hep loosen his chest/nose congestion. I hope this helps :)
