Hello,
I am a 38 almost 39 year old who needs help finding age appropriate clothes for myself. Ok, here is the problem. I am 5' 1" and about 100 lbs. I cannot fit into the womens clothes and the stores in my area who have a petite section seem to have styles that look like something my 80 year old grandma would wear. I have two teenage daughters who are bigger than me, so Im finding myself wearing their clothes that they cannot wear anymore. I wear alot of Holister sweatshirts and my girls say I look silly. Now I'm not bragging , but I do look alot younger than what I really am and these sweatshirts only add to that fact. On one ocassion I was mistaken for my husbands daughter. That was embarrasing for him. And I am always being asked if my oldest daughter is my sister. I have to admit this does do wonders for the ego, but I don't really want to look like a 16 year old who is married to a 40 year old man! And I don't want to look like a grandma either. So, if anyone has advice on where to shop that isn't too expensive for petite women please let me know. Thanks so much,
T.

try Talbots, Coldwater Creek, Christopher and Banks. All have nice selection of petites with classic styling. I also get stuff at Macys and JC Penney's

You're still young at 38, but you're too old to be wearing Hollister sweatshirts. Gap online, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor (might be a little too granny-like for your taste) and Ann Taylor Loft all have great petite selections. Macy's own brand "Inc" makes cute petite clothes too. Good luck!

I am 41, 5' and 115 so I feel your pain. Petite Sophistacate (was part of Casual Corner) has closed its doors. I have found clothes lately at Kohl's, JC Penny's, Target and the local goodwill. I have visited their stores and shoped on line at both places.

Good luck!

My favorite clothing stores are Cato and Kohls. If there are no stores near you, Kohls had pretty good online shopping. If you get a Kohls card you'll get coupons every week and usually free shipping.

I had to laugh about you getting mistaken for your husband's daughter. My husband is a teacher, and people used to ask us if we met when I was his student!!! Great for my ego, but really awkward for him! I have to tell you - make sure you are taking very good care of your skin, so you keep on getting mistaken for younger than you are! If you want some tips on being comfy while dressing your age, just message me. Good luck!

I shop at Chico's in Dayton. Being a single mom, I can't afford a lot but they do have good sales. They have great styles for our age bracket. Plus they have some great clothes for the very petite. Please ask their assistant for help to understand their sizing system. You will probably be a triple 0.

Good luck!

I recently found Maurice's and think that they have great, stylish clothing for us 30-somethings. Their clothing comes in all sizes, from petite to plus sizes. They regularly send out coupons once you sign up with them. See below:

The first place I think if is appropriate but probably a bit expensive--though you can look for sales. The Ann Taylor clothing chain has classy clothes for petite women like you -- both "business dress" clothes and sportier ones. Also, there used to be a chain (not sure if it was national or local) called Petite Sophisticate which was good clothing for small women. I would really advise going to a good (meaning: fairly high-end) shopping mall and going into better chain stores like Macy's (maybe) and certainly Nordstrom, or Nordstrom Rack (their discount stores) or Bloomingdale's. These can be very expensive but they do have sales etc. The pricier stores do tend to have clothing for petite women that is classy and age-appropriate and not teenagerish. A few good, more expensive pieces would be better than lots of cheaper ones. (I'm not petite but my mom was extremely petite and liked to dress nicely and age-appropriately all her life, and had a struggle finding petite clothes just as you do.)

I'm your age (37, turning 38 in June) & am petite. I love Ann Taylor Loft & GAP. I also shop Target quite a lot. The women's section has cute, hip, but appropriate things.
I think the key for our age is to stick to the basics, a great pair of jeans, a crsip white blouse & add good colorful accesories.
Also, if you have the time & patience & have one in your area, shop Goodwill. The racks are crammed with name brand clothes of all sizes.
