He's been to the doctor 3 times & he say's it's an infection. I'm really worried because he's not eating well. He's 19 months & has gone through so much in one month. Any advice?

Take him off all dairy products. They cause mucus and feed the bacteria.

Give him an acidopolus supplement which you can buy at the homeopathic pharmacy. If you don't have a pharmacy near you then go to Whole Foods. Ask for assistance to get the best brand for his age-probably powder form that you can put in apple sauce. Give it to him 3x per day away from meals.

For infections, you want to boost the immune system. Green powder drinks mixed with water. Lots of clear broth soups and vegetable soup.

Be patient, it takes time. But don't worry, his body will fight it off.

I also recommend a book called Smart Medicine for Healthier Children.

keep him home for a week then he will be feeling better. He is probably only catching these infections because his immune system is so bombarded. Let him heal, and then keep him away from day care, park, etc for a week after that, otherwise it will continue.

Hi Anna,

Has he been vaccinated recently with DPT?
He could be having an adverse reaction.
Have you tried homeopathy?
I have a 4 year old and have only treated him homeopathically since birth. It is a wonderful/no side effect/user friendly medicine and it quite powerful in it's ability to help the body heal itself. What area are you in? I can recommend a few people.
best,
O.

Maybe he has allergies or adverse reaction to immunizations?
When my daughter was a baby (she is now 24) at around 3 months she started having ear infections, fevers, vomiting and this went off and on for about 10 months. Finally my doctor who was ahead of his time said we maybe having a problem with food allergies and or the immunzations. I took her off dairy and then grains. She had protein and vegtables soy, friut would cause diarrea and running noses. She didn't have any more injections until she was in her teens. The ear infections stopped right away after I changed her diet no more vomiting and fevers. When she was about eleven I had her tested for allergies because she always had a running nose and the new doctor wanted her to be on Dimatap all the time which I found out years later was a problem. She had about 150 different allergy test spots and the Dr. declared there was only two thing she was not alleric to, Dogs and Horses?
They didn't do food allery testing because the Dr. said that if she was alleric to trees and shrubs she was most likley allergic to lots of diffrent fruits and grains, not so much to vegtables. She also had a terrible time in 1st grade with her nose running from the minute she got in her class room until she left. About 5 years later the school had to be gutted in that classroom because of the sever mold growth.
Have you thought about checking into alternative medicine?
I wished they had had more of if back then and I had lived where there was practioners I would have tried Chiropractors, Acupunturist, and Holistic Medical doctors which is what we do now with my grandaughter. She takes Medigentic vitiams and has had adjustments for the one ear infections she had with great results. This is just a few ideas that I have done for myself and my family and hope that things get better.
Check out Dr. Andrew Weil's site. He is a great alternative/intergrative doctor. He might have some information there that could help if things don't get better. Hang in there I know its tough when you have a baby and they aren't feeling well. You are doing a great job Mom!

Hi,
My son had a really bad illness like this recently too. Several of his little friends also. Apparently, it is a REALLY bad cold that is going around. My doctor just said to wait it out. My son refused to eat also but he did drink plenty of water and orange juice. You may try light foods like toast, apples, bananas. If he still seems to be doing bad, then i would take him to the ER or another doctor. I hope this helps.
God bless.

Hi Anna,
Have you taken your son to the doctor yet? It sounds like his immune system is now so run down that he's having trouble fighting anything that comes his way. I'm assuming he's at home and not in day care at this point? If not, you should probably take him out for a bit until he has a chance to get his strength and resiliency back. My second son became very sick around 5 months and we ended up having to pull him out of daycare completely for a while. I know that's not always feasible to do, but see what your doctor suggests as well.

Please see another doctor. Throwing up for a week would make me really nervous. My daughter ended up in the hospital from severe dehydration after only throwing up for a day. The on-call doctor told me not to worry, but we ended up in the hospital later that night. Don't automatically trust your doctor. For your child to have all of these things, one after the other, I would check it out further for sure.

Dear Anna,

Try giving him food that he really likes, in little bits throughout the day. and spend a lot of time with him without worrying that your 'work' is piling up. Water too , small amounts. One time I had to give my son little tiny bits of ice that melted in his mouth, so that he could stay hydrated - we had a hard time getting him to stop throwing up. C. N.

Anna:

No dairy of any kind when a child is sick with an infection. No milk...no cheese... just dont. Dairy feeds bacteria and bacteria need to live to produce an infection. You will see a big difference if you do this. Be sure he has lots of water...no sugar. No soda and sugar things.
Remember...no dairy...no sugar.

Hi Anna. Sometimes you just have to be insistent with doctors. This sounds like an issue that may require putting tubes in his ears because all of those symptoms are linked to sinus issues. Both of my boys had the same symptoms and they just did not get better even with several courses of anti-biotics. It seemed like we spent most of our time in the doctors' offices and nothing worked. They would be fine after a couple of days on anti-biotics but within a week of having finished it would be sick again. Finally, one of the doctors decided to put tubes in their ears. The drainage during the first few days after the operation was really frightening, but once it cleared up they were fine. My boys are now 20 and 17, VERY healthy, and neither even had a cold since having the tubes put in their ears. The other possibility is allergies, however unless that is normal in your family, I wouldn't let them give you that general diagnosis until you had tried everything else. One doctor diagnosed my youngest son with allergies just because he didn't know what else to call it when his problems didn't resolve. We left that doctor and the new doctor is the one who finally decided to put the tubes in his ears. Ask your doctor about it to see if this might be an option to help your son. Good luck and I hope he feels better soon.

I am a mother of 3. I underatand how frustrating it is when they get sick, and on top of that they don't want to eat. My kids have been on a whole food supplement called JUICE PLUS for about 2 years now and I've really noticed a difference in their health. They still get sick but they don't get as sick as they used to and it doesn't last that long. Juice Plus is basically 17 fruits and vegetables in a capsule. So they get all of the nutrients as if they ate the 17 fruits and veggies. And since they get the nutients it makes their immune system less prone to illness. Hope that helps. Hi Anna,

My daughter Brianna was sick alot as a toddler. She would lose weight because she would not eat. I would make a pot of chicken soup with vegatables and boil them down. Then I would take the stock and put some pasta in differant shapes (ie curly, shells). She would have fun catching the pasta and the soup was full of good stuff for her sick body. Another thing, if he is eating a little then what ever you give him make it healthy to help his body heal. Good luck and don't worry. I. B

How stressful especially because this is your first. It's all ok and most likely normal. The little ones just don't have strong immune systems. My 2.5 y/o has been sick since Thanksgiving and gives it to my 5 month old too. They have both had the "runs" for 3 weeks and been living on pedialite forever. There is a end to it all. Just seems to take forever. Be patient and strong.

i am not a doctor. my son was sick on and off for 3 months between 5-8months of age (he is totally breaastfed). it was a grueling combo of colds, ear infect. etc. he did get better. it was almost like everything hit him all at once. he hasn't been that sick since. at the time i was very exhausted and stressed and i think that also may have prolonged the sicknesses. (we did travel as well). plus add new teeth in and you have a tiring time. my son did use anti-biotics for the ear infect. but during that tiem i gave him lots of pro-biotics (acidopholus) and i think that helped keep him from being too out of balance. i did read that the flu virus is extra stable at colder temps so if you live in a cold place...well...anyway, take care and hope everything turns out okay. it usually does, kids are resilient...

I think that the disease takes your appitite. Just keep asking questions of the doctor and ask for a second opinion if you are not comfortable with his.

Good luck!

OMG! You poor dear. I went through this last year with my youngest. She was 6 months old when it all started and it didn't completely go away until she was 13 months. It started with a cold then pneumonia and so on. It was awful. I finally gave up on western medicine and started seeing a Pediatric Acupuncturist (mostly does pressure with her fingers on little ones) and she is a chinese medicine doctor. Within a month of seeing her my daughter was %100 better. Knock on wood she has been healthy ever since. She is now 20 months old.

If you are interested in trying this method feel free to e-mail me and I will get you her info. Also, she is located off of Larchmont in Hollywood.

I have 2 daughters, the eldest was 3 months premature and the youngest, 1 month. I was advised by the doctor that I should treat their colds differently than normal babies and that ear infection develops very quickly with unattended colds. What worked for my kids when they were younger:
ALTERNATING CHILDREN'S TYLENOL (acetaminophen)and CHILDREN'S MOTRIN (ibuprofen)every 4 hours will help ease the pain of the ear infection and fever (esp if it's a continuous fever). I gave them soy milk instead of regular milk to help with their digestion (alternatives: pedialyte or jello depending on their eating preference). This will help the baby hydrated. Humidifier helps. DO NOT USE VICKS WHEN USING HUMIDIFIER. It leaves a sticky substance in their respiratory! You can rub their feet with Vicks (as long as they don't put it in their mouth) or put socks on after applying it. Most of all - Keep them warm with your hugs!!!

Oh gosh Anna, I feel for you. It's so scary to have a little one that sick for so long. There isn't much you can do right now except the obvious things: keep him inside, warm, hydrated and keep him on the antibiotics and motrin/tylenol. Did you know you can give him tylenol and Motrin simultaneously? I also recomend jello, chicken broth, zup and saltines - all foods that go down easily.

Once he's past this you might want to look for another doctor. You might also want to start giving him some good quality vitamens from the health food store. My children were sick a lot at that age and I switched from conventional foods, like those found at Ralphs, over to all organic health food. It sounds silly but it made a big difference in their health.

I hope your little one gets better soon!

I'm thinking allergies too. My daughter had been very sickly for about 6mo-1yr...colds ever other month or so, congestion in between, bouts of vomitting. We finally correlated it to dairy foods. Since she's been off the milk products, she's a completely different child. Good lucka nd stay sane

Don't feed him any wheat dairy or sugar and his immune system will climb back up and he'll quit getting so sick. Can you still breastfeed him, do that only if you can it has the best stuff for him. Make sure he's getting water, try frozen blueberries if he likes those. Check him for gluten intolerance at www.enterolab.com that might be why he keeps throwing up. If you give him antibiotics make sure he gets probiotics. It's hard to have a sick kid. Mine was allergic to wheat and the other to wheat and soy, soy would make her irritable and cry. The other one puked with wheat. Enterolab with give you the best answer. Here's to him feeling better! Just stay home with him and hold him as much as you can. Put him in a baby sling.

Hi Anna. Have you heard of Juice Plus? It is 17 fruits, vegetables, and fiber in capsules, chewables, and gummies. It is not a vitamin but whole food and the company has extensive research to back it up. It has been a blessing to our friend's and family's health and to all my customers. I started my son when he was 18 months and my daughter when she started eating baby food. I would break open the capsules and pour them into her food. Check out the website and you can read more about it. www.simplypreventive.com

I would agree with Len B - alternating children's motrin and tylenol for fevers and pain and the humidifier. We went through a month like this with our 11 month old when we all had a lot of stressors on our health. It passed and now he is healthy and his weight gain is back up.
I highly doubt that this is food related - it sounds like just a run of unrelated illnesses.
Just so you know: dairy products do not cause mucus. There is a small amount of thickening of mucus associated with any high-fat foods (includes nuts and whole fat milk products) but if you increase fluid intake, this should not be a problem.

I have 4 children of my own 3 of them are 5 and under. I try my hardest to keep them well. I give my children a health drink called Mona Vie along with vitamin C and Organic foods.

Mona Vie is the #1 supper food in the world at this time. Mona Vie is made from all fruits that contain high levels of antioxidants and what that means it helps build your immune system and so you can fight off colds quicker and other infections. The other thing I do is run a humidifier in there rooms so it helps them breath better every time they sleep, but only when they are sick.

I guess you can say I'm not very fond of prescription drugs. I feel they weaken the immune system and you become dependent on them, you never really get better. Well I take that back you get better for a short while, but then you are sick again and now you need something stronger. I hope this helps:)

God Bless!

I believe strongly in Chiropractic for adults and babies. I have taken my two kids to the Chiro since they were 4 days old. My children are never sick my son has had maybe 1 cold his 5 years of life and it was only a day long. IM in trouble when they do end up getting sick because I don't know what to do.
The reason I do get them ajusted at least once a month or when I see a cold coming is because your spine is your whole nervous system and if something is out of place then your immune system is weak and you can get sick. If you spine is not out then your immune system is stong and your body is able to fight off germs.Birth is very h*** o* the babies bodies
Its worth a try its not going to hurt the baby. They put the baby on there shoulder or yours and they use there fingers to ajust the baby. The baby may cry a little just for a second then they will have a big smile.
Good Luck

Hi Anna H.

I've been a mommy for 18 1/2 years now, with my youngest at 10 1/2. I remember when my kids were much younger, and always picking something up from other children. It's a jungle out there.

I too have been where you are, my child continually sick for a month or more. I finally turned to a friend who's children always seemed so healthy. She told me to go to a homeopathic pharmacy and speak to an MD (yes they have them there) about your childs symptoms and what the Pediatrician has said.

He/She will recommend some great remedies for your child that are safe. I still take my youngest to the Ped. for some things, but for the most part, I treat my family homeopathically. It might help.

Also, wash baby blankets, toys and spray car seat with some sort of disenfectant spray, and I always keep a small bottle of the antibacterial gel in my purse!

Sorry this is so long! I hope it helps Anna!
