Need a Reliable Vet

I live in South Hadley and am in need of a reliable vet to give us a second opinion. One of our dogs was given a potential cancer diagnosis, but since then the things the vet are recommending are not consistent with what another vet (my Aunt in NY) is telling us. I need to find an animal hospital or clinic that has an Internist that won't sail us down the river which I believe is what the current doc is doing. Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

well as I updated earlier, I took Trooper to see Dr. Kintzer at Boston Road Animal Hospital. Unfortunately, the diagnosis was the same. However, I feel more confident that by getting the 2nd opinion and having a vet that explains things and a staff that treated Trooper with so much kindness not to mention how they treated John and I. Dr. Kintzer also agreed that we weren't giving Trooper enough calories per day. that what the other vet had him on was not providing him enough protein and nutrients. So, we've upped the amount of food. Pretty much at this point, the doc said, if he's hungry...feed him. We bought him some treats and more food and he's got some good days and some bad ones. So-we are keeping him comfortable and happy as long as we can.

thanks again for all the suggestions. I am new to the site, but to get such an outpouring of support so early on...I'm glad I stumbled upon this site.
I will update you all again once I know more. Thanks again

Here is the latest update. Trooper went down hill rather quickly after getting the 2nd opinion. We had him put down on 11/19. It was the most difficult thing John and I have had to go through as a couple.

Belle our other dog misses her friend immensely. Although we know Trooper is not replaceable, we also realize that Belle needs a new friend. We've started slowly looking at adopting a rescue dog at various shelters nearby.

we've been going to Lichtenburg Vet for several years and have been very happy with them. We have one very stick cat (takes three meds a day) and one very healthy cat - so we've experienced them on both levels of care.

I hope you dog gets better soon.

E.- We have gone to Valley Vet in Hadley for years as well- they are really great, and can usually see emergency cases right away. If you have the option, Drs Diamond and Gatty are my first choice, but everyone there is really good.
Just be clear about why you are there and they will give you good advise.

hope that helps, good luck!

Hi E., I live in S. Hadley too and use Holyoke Animal Hosp. for our dog on Rte 141. http://www.holyokevet.com/ I really like the vet there. She is great with all animals and seems to have a real passion for what she does. Also, the staff is very nice and the prices aren't too bad. I don't know if they have an internist but you could call and ask.

E.,
sorry to hear about your dog...we had a vet emergency last year and went to the new animal hospital in S. Deerfield about half a mile past the Yankee Candle and they were excellent...The vet we usualy go to wasn't taking the problem seriously and when we went to the animal hospital they took care of our dog right away, turns out it was a life or death situation so we were really glad we got the second opinion! Their # is ###-###-####. Good Luck!
