You can apply for your passport at a post office. I know the Elmhurst post office does it. You can check at your local PO. Applications are also available there and will list the procedures. The PO has fixed hours for passport applications. When I applied for my kids, it took about 6-8 weeks for them.
Good luck,
Aarti.

Post Office to apply. The 6-8 weeks is pretty standard now because there are some extra background checks that have to be verified now. The process changed this past year, and for a while they were really backed up. Some people were waiting 3-4 months to get theirs in. Three weeks for children because there is less to verify, though the adults expect to wait the full 6-8 weeks.

You can apply at a post office. You can look up the info at http://www.usps.com/passport/ you can find post office locations (not all of them do passports), you can also find fees, forms and other info....
I applied for my kids and myself about 3 weeks ago. My kids passports already came in the mail - it took about 2 weeks, but I'm still waiting for mine. They give you a lead time of 6-8 weeks....
You can find and print all the forms on this website, and fill them out at home, so you don't have to waste your time doing it at the post office....
The web site also will tell you what documents you will need...
You can get the passport photos at Walgreens.
Good luck.

You can apply at the postoffice. Not sure if at every location. We applied at downtown Wheaton post office. They take your picture right there too. We applied last Janauary, it took about 3 weeks to get back. Quicker passports, if you have a membership, can be done at Costco or Sams & of course you pay for a speedy turn around. Same thing at the postoffice, you can pay to speed it up. You have to bring your birth certificate with & in turn, they will mail your passport & birthcertificate back to your home.
