Natural Remedies for Ear Infection?

I know there are a lot of moms who are into natural remedies and who don't use antibiotics. This request is actually for me right now, but also for use on my whole family in the future. I am on the last day of antibiotics for a sinus infection and have now come down with a double ear infection. My Dr. prescribed a really strong antibiotic, but I researched it online and I don't want to take it, as there are some very scary side effects associated with this drug. I'm sure ear infections were around long before antibiotics were, so I do believe that it is possible for them to go away on their own. If you have experience with natural remedies for curing ear infections and/or information on how long it takes an infection to cure itself, I'd love to hear what you have to say. Thanks for your help, Moms!

So What Happened?

Thanks, Moms for all of the great responses! I went to the health food store yesterday and talked with the owner about my issues and he told me that, since I had already had the infection for a few days, that I should probably take the antibiotics this time, but that in the future, at the first sign of an infection, use the garlic/mullein drops. Interestingly, I used the drops yesterday on my ear that is more infected than the other and started the antibiotics. This morning I awoke to find that the ear I used the drops is 1000 times better than the less infected ear. I think it was the drops, not the meds that worked because my other ear feels the smae as it did yesterday. So, I'm a believer now! Once I get through this ordeal, I will try only natural remedies in the future when I can catch it early enough. Thanks again, everyone!! Oh, and for those of you hinting at home chemicals as the culprit, I'm already a Melaleuca member and am working on having a completely chemical free household!

Hi!
I would suggest seeing a Chiropractor. Being one myselft, I am a big fan:) We get ear infectiions when fluid cannot naturally drain downward from our sinus cavities. This can be caused from your eustation tube being out of its normal angle (from a cervical misalignment), from your cervical lymph nodes not draining and some others. Whatever the cause, chiropractic can help by taking the abnormal pressure off of the middle ear canal and in return, it drains as it should. Sometimes, you will feel relief right away, or it may take a day or two. My daughter had a double ear infection at only 9 months. She saw her chiro for 3 days in a row and it was completely gone! I'm not in practice right now but I have a great friend in North Charleston that could help. Let me know if you would like her name. Best of luck to you!
also.. Make sure to get a lot of probiotics in, this will help replace the good bacteria lost with the antibiotic:)

Definitely Garlic You can even make your own garlic oil if you are not feeling up to a run to the store.also you mentioned you have been on antibiotics and still got an ear infection which should be mentioned the majority of ear infections are viral and thus antibiotics (bacterial) won't help at all. Also in addition to the chiro care I'd also maybe think about going to a massage therapist and haveing some lymphatic massage done! ALSO start taking a good probiotic and heal your gut *and your daughters) to restore the balance of good bacteria in your gut! and if you are really prone to sinus/ear infections I'd also look at dietary culprits dairy would be my first guess and work out from there!

Pick up some garlic/mullein oil at Whole Foods. It might not fix it this time if your infection is severe, but if you use it as a preventive and put it in at the first sign of a cold or ear pain it'll work. I've used it on my kids more than once, and the ped was impressed at how well the infections cleared up. Hylands also makes some earache tabs that can help, and like someone mentioned previously, chiropractic care can prevent them.

All of the advice you have received thus far is great! I have experience with garlic/mullein oil, chiropractic care, acupuncture, homeopathics, various tinctures (esp, echinacea and goldenseal)...But one of the best remedies for many ailments is rest and hydration. You mentioned that you are the one suffering from the infection, and I know the life of a mom is busy (especially a mom with her own business). So whatever extra time you can to sneak in a nap or meditation (quiet time for yourself) ,drink plenty water.

Garlic oil is good as well as colloidal silver in the ears. When my two oldest were young, my oldest would get ear infections a lot. When he was almost 4yo was when I stopped going to doctors and taking care of our own health. I have found in my opinion, the best ear oil. You can order online at www.herbsfirst.com or www.worldhealthdepot.com. It's a Ear and Nerve formula. Wonderful stuff! (Btw, I would stay off of dairy while this is going on if you do cow's milk.)

I would always warm whatever oil you are going to decide to use...as it is more comfortable to apply in the ear. I would warm it by putting the bottle of oil in a hot cup of water and wait about 5 minutes. Test it on your wrist like one would a baby bottle and then put a few drops in your ear. I would do this a few times a day.

The Ear and Nerve formula is stinky, but wonderful. You can also take it internally, if you would like.

Garlic and colloidal silver are both natural antibiotics. They are both wonderful. You can actually make your own garlic oil cheaper and of course it would be fresh. Good luck!

Hi M.!

I would suggest Sweet Oil. You can get it at Walmart or a drug store in the same area as the peroxide, rubbing alcohol, witch hazel ect. That's what my family has used for generations. I had some on hand before my son was even born but fortunately, we've never had to use it (so far)! I guess it would depend on the size of the bottle, but the one we got was about $2 or $3. I hope you find something that works for you. I've never had an ear infection, but I'm sure it's not fun ~ feel better :)

God Bless,
~J.

Hi M.,
Frequent ear infections are often caused by the angle of your inner ear. Chiropractic care and natural remedies including the Netti pot has helped all four of my family members. We all see Dr. Eric Richards in Woodstock. He is the owner of Healthsprout Chiropractic. He offers free consultations to anyone that I refer to him if you want to go see him. He has taught us so much about pursuing health vs. sick care in the last 2 years. He can be reached @ ###-###-####. I also frequent the herb shop in Holly Springs Sally the owner is great at recommending things
Best wishes,

Try {Willow/Garlic Ear Oil} by Herbs for Kids. You can find it at your local health food store or online at Herbs for Kids.com. I use it for both of my daughters who are One and Three years old. I use it for myself too and it works really well for my family. You just warm the oil up by placing the bottle in hot water, test the product first on the inside of your wrist then put a couple of drops in both ears. Since the product is designed especially for kids I double or triple the dose for myself. I hope you find this helpful.

Since you are in the thick of it right now I won't suggest homeopathics but I think they are great when you catch it right as it is starting. We use Garlic Complex instead of antibiotics when we feel we need to use something. Also since you have been on antibiotics you need to get on pro and pre biotics as soon as you get off of them. They will help your body fight infection as well as recover from being on the antibiotics. There is no use taking them while you are on an antibiotic as they basically counteract the effect. Your run of the mill Wallmart brand or such will not do the job. You need good quality products or you are wasting your money. Our family has used the same products for almost 24 years and I have raised my 11 children using them and we wouldn't switch for anything. With all those kids we have only had to use antibiotics about 6 times. Just ask if you have any questions. I would be happy to answer anything if I can!

Sincerely,
K. B

My first question is how would you know your child has an ear infection? I'm sure you know the difference between a virus and a bacterial problem, so I'd really encourage you to take your daughter to the doctor and be sure. Antibiotics are not all bad, especially getting ears fixed. If you linger/delay, she could lose her hearing. Bless you and your family during the holidays.

My daughter just got over an ear infection naturally.
Garlic drops with (I think its called Millin or millan) the Millan part is what helps the pain....the garlic helps the bacteria. It knocked it out. You do 2 drops up to 3 times a day for 5 days. It will help. You can get these at a health food store.

Hi M.,

My first line of defense is chiropractic care for everything. I became a believer when a chiropractor got rid of my daughter's ear infections. It really makes sense when you understand the philosophy of building the immune system so your body is capable of healing itself. Antibiotics can fix certain problems but they alway break down the immune system to make your body susceptible to other things.

Other than chiropractic, there are some supplements you can try. Beta Glucan is used to build the immune system in cancer patients. You can take as much as you want with no side effects and you can get it at the health store. (It can cost anywhere from six dollars to 106 dollars. For an infection, the cheap stuff is fine. Make sure it is a pharmaceutical grade however. That means no GNC or Walmart. Vitamin Shoppe is okay, not Vitamin World...most mom and pops are okay)

Collodial silver will clear up any infection. I got rid of my Dad's pneumonia with it when the doctor was yelling antibiotics. Bacteria can not adhere to silver. It is a metal so it can build up in your system but I use it sparingly when necessary. It is NOT for maintenance, only infections. Ask the health store the dosage if you decide to use it. You can take it orally or you can drop one drop in each ear.

Hope I helped!

M.:
The products that we can buy at the discount store, grocery store, pharmacy, etc. contain formaldehyde(Quaternium 15), which causes ear infections. I would like to recommend to you some natural products that are safer for you and your family. What do you think about: 1/2 ounce of detergent for cleaning a regular load of clothes, 1/2 ounce of brightener for white and colored clothes, 1 bottle($5.24) of an all-purpose cleaner makes into 4 sprayer bottles which is equal to 3 409 bottles(which is $9.87).
