Name Change - Homewood,IL

When I got married, it was in the middle of the year (I work at a school) and I chose to keep my name for the time being so as not to confuse teachers and students already introduced to me by one name. When I got my new driver's license, I just added my married name to my maiden name so that the bank, payroll, etc. would still know who was who. At the DMV, they didn't ask any questions, just looked at my marriage license...no questions asked. I have never changed my name on my SS card. Now that it's several years later, I think I'm ok with just using my married name but I don't know what I need to do to adjust that. How important is it to change my name on my SS card? Is this going to be costly?

What can I do next?

It didn't cost me a penny to have my name changed on my SSC. All you need is proper paperwork and identification and to fill out a form. You should be able to download a form from the website http://www.ssa.gov and also have any questions you have answered.
As far as importance it is important because you have a legal document stating you are married and have chosen to take his last name. What is on your marriage certificate should reflect on other identification documents.

I dont know what state you are in but here in Florida. I was told it is best to have both your Maiden name on one card and your Married name on another. To prove who you use to be and who you are now. If that makes any since. I have two cards. I only pull out the maiden name card if someone ask me about my "original" middle name since on all my documents my middle name is now my maiden name. Hope this helps.

I'm in the same boat. I had a really hard time renewing my dl when it expired. The lady behind the counter actually told me I was committing fraud by impersonating someone else, since my ss# didn't match my name!!...fraud?! She finally gave me a new dl, but said when the laws change, in a coule of years, it will be impossible to get a new dl w/o changing my name first.

I recently started a new job and have to go by my maiden name, since that's the name that is under my #. I am having it changed today, hope I don't have to wait in line forever!!

I would consider it important, and it doesn't cost anything to my knowledge. I had to do it a couple of times. It will cut down on confusion later, and my employer wouldn't change my name to my new married name until I showed them the new SS card. It just makes your life a little easier in the long run,..., IRS, titIes to homes, cars, Life Ins, Health Ins, SS Benefits down the road, and so on. C. S.

It doesn't cost much. It's more annoying to stand in line than costly. And some bodies want matching names on license and ssc for doing certain things in terms of verifying your identity. You could probably work around it, mostly, though some new employers will insist it match.

If you didn't change it on the marriage license itself, most municipalities have specific forms and fees you must submit to change it in public record which will be necessary before you can get the ssc changed. If you did change it on the marriage license, then you just need to take a copy of that to a social security office and pay them 15 or 20 dollars or something like that, and they will issue you a new one.

Its very easy to change and doesn't cost a thing. I sent my form in with my marriage license and they mailed it back a few years ago. I have a lot of clients who have been married for 20 and 30+ years find out they didn't change their name with SSA when they try to electronically file their tax returns. Not a big deal, we just list their maiden name on the return.
